Magnificent!!! I also own the Vinyl that includes " Marsch Slav" on it and it is quite movig to listen to. Not much has changed over time really except we willing except our slavery these days. but nothing lasts forever, one day our grand children will be listening to a composition about how we destroyed ZOG
@KiyoKenshin.Yes I agree that people like her and Christina Agullari and all that is pop are entertainers. But someone like Josh Groben is a true musician..I was at an afternoon performence of the CSO in the upper levels and a lot of teenagers and college kids sat up there in their tshirts and jeans.Enjoying the awesome performance .We in Chicago are so blessed. Then at least 4 of them were off to a metal show at the Congress theater. No hookers yes as many young adults as possible. YES YES.
@ComradeCody. One should not have such a closed mind.It is your opinion. Some of have different taste and can appreciate all kinds of music. My IPod has RV Williams Fantasia and the next song is either Metallica's One or Lamb of Gods Walk with me in Hell. Then back to Holst the Planets.Too each his own.Variety is the spice of life.
@dbn52 Yes, everyone can appreciate all different kinds of music. However, I believe that artists of today fall more and more out of the 'musician' category, and ever deeper into the 'entertainer' category, because their performances are coming to be about the presentation rather than the song. Likewise, instrumental music is not meant to be about the presentation; how many orchestras do you see dressed like Lady Gaga? Instrumental is about the music, pop is about the presentation.
And don't even get me started on how spectators are dressing at concerts. I'll leave it at this: If you go to a pop concert, either sex can wear jeans. However, if you go to an orchestra concert, guys should at least wear slacks and maybe (read: preferably) a tie. And ladies should be dressy. Skirts or slacks work, but be moderate about it. (Aka, we don't want no hookers at the symphony!) ;)
The version my parents had (and I nicked) on vinyl... At the age of three I used to throw myself off the couch as if shot when the cannons fired...Every version I have ever heard in my life pales against this one...
This version, along with the St Peteresburg version from 1991 are the two closest performances to what Tchaikovsky intended for the premier performance in 1880.
This is a truly remarkable version playing here. I could only understand a portion of what the chorus was saying though. If any one knows where I might get the lyrics, please do let me know...
@aaronnaku Hi... Lyrics to the prayer as follow... God Preserve Thy People. Mighty Lord, preserve us from jeopardy. Take thee now our faith and love, thine inheritance. Grant vict'ry o'er our treacherous and cruel enemies, And to our land bring peace. O mighty Lord hear our lowly prayer, And by thy shining , holy light, Grant us, O Lord, peace again. O mighty Lord hear our prayer and save our people. Forever, forever , Amen... As written on the back cover of the Vinyl CBS Cat No SBR 235423
Still my favorite version. The carillon bells are too loud (and their use at end is just goofy), but the signature Phil. Orch. strings shine here as they so often did for Romantic period composers. Other versions are often rushed hiding neat things in the piece.
The 1st time I heard this I was mesmerized by the incredibly controlled yet dynamically stunning Mormon Tabernacle Choir beautifully singing the opening hymn. I think it was my first time hearing them. I have been a fan ever since.
Is well the Tchaikovsky's orchestration art here and only one of the Greatest conductors like Eugene Ormandy could give this Impressive interpretation!!

@DoctorX101 . . . what? You say you do not like canons at 1 AM? Deal . . . peasants!

I first heard this recording on audiophile equipment in 1971 (AR3a and Phase Linear 700) It is still a contender for the best 1812 recording.
