True, there are two, distinctive Mac's. This was part 1, & then there was part 2 when Lindsey & Stevie joined the band. And, of course the band went into another direction with a different sound. I liked both sounds. But I admit, I am more partial to part 2. Anyway, both parts are great.
@dankwarth (I'm a Mac fan): I had wondered if the images were based on Lewis Carrol's "Through The Looking Glass"- I know there's the the part where Alice hears the story of the "Walrus and The Carpenter"- but the image here on the cover looks like a baboon to me!
Wow. I'm 27, and have only known Buckingham/Nicks era FM until this evening. While I've been impressed by and thoroughly enjoyed many of LB's pop confections (fwiw, I'd take Tusk for his work on it over Rumours, and I think Out of the Cradle is fantastic) but this music is The Real Thing... You can certainly hear the DNA given the common elements, but this just sounds... real and inspired, rather than crafted. What a drum track... that and the keys make the song. Brilliant!!!
"The song, as indicated by the title takes the form of a mystical, dreamy reverie. It features triple time rhythm on the drums by Mick Fleetwood and combines with acoustic guitar and electric keyboards to give a jazzier essence to the song.[2] Welch draws upon the use of jazz fourth chords in the song playing in a minor key and also features a guitar solo by guitarist Bob Weston[2] covering many octaves."
Bob Weston passed away a couple days ago, and this solo is one of his best. (:>
Fleetwood Mac in all their glory. I love them at all their stages! They're so damned talented. Where is the rock & roll these days? I thought it would never end! They call 'stuff' today 'rock'. I don't think so….
I remember trying to play the drums to this song and it was so mesmerizing I kept stopping. My buddies would get angry with me 'cause I loved the rythme so much I couldn't play the whole song.
My favorite Fleetwood Mac song. They've always sounded great, whether they're being led by Bob Welch, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Peter Green, Danny Kirwan, etc.
Good comments...I feel the same way. Sooo tight...hauntingly beautiful. I also echo the comments about this awesome band F-Mac was before Nicks. LOVE THE JAZZY GUITAR TOO!
How old is this song??? 40 years? Man they were tight back then b4 Buckingham/Nicks came into the picture.......Sounds like an LSD trip that they enjoyed back in the day!!
@sepulthrax i suppose it's just the crazy kinda image mix that surfaces in dreams. a combination of archetype (sea & beast), novelty (book), and commodity (the cake), as a combination of memory zones all get stimulated simultaniously during sleep.
Hey guess what? I am a feminist, I'm not miserable and I also miss and loved when music was designed for the psychedelic experience. I too am not a fan of the typical pop song formula. I don't necessarily think Fleetwood Mac was at their best with Stevie and Lindsay. And people who think so never really explored the Peter Green era and Bob Welch era. Grammys don't mean anything. If Katy Perry and Taylor Swift can get them, anyone can.
@davidleegoth This is pre LindsayStevie.Check out pre Bob Welch with the original lineup with Peter Green, great guitarist and bluesman ,the original Fleetwood Mac.
amazing classic song. they were so talented. i can't help it, i liked them prior to the addition of stevie. love her and all but they lost this sound after she joined.
@chefjanet2k Not True, Fleetwood Mac was at their best with Stevie, which was why with "Rumors", they got the most Grammys, EVERY song on that album was great, and after that they went down hill.
Gold Dust Woman, and the Chain and Dreaming are great songs, my humble opinion
@chefjanet2k this guy left the band on his own,and stevie and lindsey came as a package as they wanted him to replace dude, and she came with him,but I agree, they did lose the sound they had
Carlos Castaneda always came to mind with this song. When music was designed for the psychedelic experience, quite unlike now, where music is designed for miserable feminists, drunks, and commodities.
@MrBill35 I wonder did BobW ever meet Carlos personaly? he surely read the books. Throw some dreamy Riders On The Storm in there also. Southern West Coast Magical Sixties and Seventies streaming the subconscious dream.
As other 70's giants start to sound dated. I ain't talking production but lifestyle and beliefs as demonstrated in their music etc. This sounds fresh but it's really timeless. Been lovin' this and Stones Black and Blue lately.
@currencymule hmm, I never thought of it that way. To me it was always one of my Dad's fascinating album covers that i always stared at for hours. And the music was good too!!
