This is a response to the "top comment" by nickgrad2010. Humans CAN destroy the earth with pollution. Obviously you live in a nice place where you have people picking up the trash and you never see what happens to it. Well, go to some other countries and you'll see the harsh reality. There are humans who are suffocating in smog, drinking water that has more chemicals than i can think of, and living on a pile of trash. Go live there, and tell me we're not the cause.

I don't care about global warming. We just shouldn't be expelling pollution of which we're not 100% certain that nature can fully process it at the same rate that we're expelling it. The concept of global warming is obviously being abused for some people's or company's gain, but that's nothing new - humankind always does that.
You know what else causes warming in the Earth's atmosphere? Water vapor. There are no limits on how much water vapor we can put in the atmosphere, though.

@PseudoPoiesis Unfortunatly, the only way to stop global warming is to stop it's causes, which we can not do. The Sun is causing global warming, not man. H2O constitutes 95% of all greenhouse gases. Man adds no appreciable totals to this gas in the atmosphere. CO2 constitutes 4% of all green house gases, of which man is responsable for not quite 4%. So we are responsble for $% of $% of all greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.,doing the math, .16% of the total, essentially, nothing.

@PseudoPoiesis As someone who agrees with you, I'd like to suggest a correction to future GW campaigns. Don't mention GW. Something does have to be done, but while scepticism or short term threat is invisible people won't listen. The way to curb GW is to reduce consumption of energy and resources, limit population, sustainable energy. This is also exactly what is needed to fend off wars and famine as oil scarcens and population increases in size and energy consumption. Campaign on that.
Global warming is caused by multiple things not primarily by too much pollution but too much people in the 1800's there was about 650 million people and they did slightly pollute today there is about 6.5 billion people so we are polluting 10 times more but each person pollutes as much as a person in the 1800's so we aren't as bad at keeping the environment clean as most people think
actually global warming is real, but it is not caused by humans. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support that GW is man-made. Do we pollute? Absolutely. That's the term which refers to the natural process of changing weather due to earthly processes - i.e. - plate tectonics, volcanism, etc. Global warming has a connotation which suggests more that it is involved with human interaction with the environment. Al Gore would be one of the few individuals who would actually make money from that. There's plenty of evidence that global warming has been occurring, that's why there's near unanimous consent that global warming is a problem in the scientific community. as long as we're in this path, let's explain something. The ice age started because of the crash of the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. It brought up enough gasses to block out the sun, which started the ice age. Then, when the gas dispersed, the heat from the sun came along again, and melted the ice.
there were several ice ages after the meteor crash 65 mill yrs ago. approx once every 10,000 yrs. and the ice age caused by the meteor was relatively short compared to the one that sustained the mammoths and such.

There's such a lag between feeling the effects and there's an inertia. also resource depletion is real and you don't notice it too much unless you're looking otherwise you put your hand in the cookie jar and see two cookies left and go "OH SHIT!"

There is geological evidence to support that. I agree that pollution and consumption of fossil fuels is not helping the earth, but it's not destroying the planet. To think that humans can destroy the earth by blowing smoke is both arrogant and ignorant. Al Gore has a own private jet and a $50 million house for goodness sake.

@squamish4244 He didn't deny that people might have effect, he just said it's arrogant to think we are able to DESTROY the earth by just heating it up 2 degrees (let's assume for a moment it really is our fault, because it lacks some proof). It has been warmer and it has been a lot cooler, there have been moments that almost all life on this planet was gone, but it recovered everytime. Warming up until a point where the earth has been numerous times really isn't a problem.

This subject remains amusing to me.
I happen to be a multiple Ph.D holder in all the relevant areas and trust me when I say that there is no such thing as global warming.
In fact if we were to consume the way we do for another 2000 years the earth would be heated by just one degree.
The only way in this entire universe to warm a planet is by its parent star heating up or the planets orbit changing.
Also, melt some ice cubes in a glass of water and check if the water level has risen..(It won't)

Man adds no appreciable totals to this gas in the atmosphere. CO2 constitutes 4% of all green house gases, of which man is responsable for not quite 4%. So we are responsble for $% of $% of all greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.,doing the math, .16% of the total, essentially, nothing.

@PseudoPoiesis As someone who agrees with you, I'd like to suggest a correction to future GW campaigns. Don't mention GW. Something does have to be done, but while scepticism or short term threat is invisible people won't listen. The way to curb GW is to reduce consumption of energy and resources, limit population, sustainable energy. This is also exactly what is needed to fend off wars and famine as oil scarcens and population increases in size and energy consumption. Campaign on that.

Global warming is caused by multiple things not primarily by too much pollution but too much people in the 1800's there was about 650 million people and they did slightly pollute today there is about 6.5 billion people so we are polluting 10 times more but each person pollutes as much as a person in the 1800's so we aren't as bad at keeping the environment clean as most people think

1- Climatology =/= Meteorology (is it 28 degrees everywhere on the planet? No? Then fuck off)
2- Climatologists are the ONLY GOOD skeptics of global warming. It's their job as scientists to question and test the validity of theories, like GW, and so far the evidence is baffling.
3- You don't need 100% certainty to declare that something is happening. Concensus is reached when there is a MAJORITY, just like elections everything else. Btw right now GW is ~90% certain.

That's the term which refers to the natural process of changing weather due to earthly processes - i.e. - plate tectonics, volcanism, etc. Global warming has a connotation which suggests more that it is involved with human interaction with the environment. The majority of them were employed by companies which would be effected negatively by the enactment of the Kyoto agreement. You haven't proven a thing, you're falsely using evidence. Climate change, yes, is a natural process. But global warming is not at all, that's why there's a separate term for it.

Again, where are you basing your accusations. If you look at trends in weather data, our highest temperatures ever recorded were in 2005 and 2009. Living in Canada, I can tell you that our winter's are certainly getting milder. In addition, there is plenty of data to back me up, such as "Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics - From Air Pollution to Climate Change (2nd Edition)". The reason why you think that global warming is not occuring is due to increased water vapor.

ok, the earth used to be frozen and in an ice age....and it is not any more because the ice melted....and we were not here with fossil fuels to cause that....SO HOW THE HELL DID IT HAPPEN. The earth goes through things called phases of heating and cooling, thats how. as long as we're in this path, let's explain something. The ice age started because of the crash of the meteor that killed the dinosaurs. It brought up enough gasses to block out the sun, which started the ice age. Then, when the gas dispersed, the heat from the sun came along again, and melted the ice.

there were several ice ages after the meteor crash 65 mill yrs ago. approx once every 10,000 yrs. and the ice age caused by the meteor was relatively short compared to the one that sustained the mammoths and such.

@Makron5 Was there an ICE AGE millions of years ago ? YES, are we still in an ice age ? NO what happened to the ice ? IT MELTED...what causes ice to melt ? HEAT...if the global ice was metled, then it had to have been Global Warming..how long ago did all this happen ? ask one of your scientist !!

The earth goes through phases of heating and cooling. There have been 4 significant Ice Ages, as well as one minor Ice Age from which the earth is still recovering. There is geological evidence to support that. I agree that pollution and consumption of fossil fuels is not helping the earth, but it's not destroying the planet. To think that humans can destroy the earth by blowing smoke is both arrogant and ignorant. Al Gore has a own private jet and a $50 million house for goodness sake.

@nickgrad2010 I wonder how fast temperatures rose in the past. Compare that to what's happened in the last 140 years and you'll probably see that this is not just a natural cycle. Don't you think climatologists knew about the Ice Ages before saying man is contributing to global warming?

@nickgrad2010 To think 7 billion humans *won't* have a major and potentially very serious effect on the earth is arrogant and ignorant. We now consume about one quarter of ALL plant life on the planet, and have substantially altered the carbon and nitrogen cycles. The science is very strong on that. And forget Al Gore, he is an easy target for ad hominem attacks. What about climate expert James Hansen, whom the Bush Administration tried to silence when he spoke out about climate change?

@squamish4244 He didn't deny that people might have effect, he just said it's arrogant to think we are able to DESTROY the earth by just heating it up 2 degrees (let's assume for a moment it really is our fault, because it lacks some proof). It has been warmer and it has been a lot cooler, there have been moments that almost all life on this planet was gone, but it recovered everytime. Warming up until a point where the earth has been numerous times really isn't a problem.

@026SH It is a problem if there are seven billion people dependent on the current climate. A change of the order of magnitude of previous epochs would have devastating effects on food production.

@nickgrad2010 Indeed we have gone through cycles of warming and cooling. However, we have sped it up out almost of control. I'm not saying we're destroying the planet, but we are certainly making things worse. Al Gore, he's just using what's available and mass produced. We should do something, but certainly not panic. That's the last thing we need.
