I'll preface this comment by saying that the song is beautiful and the execution of it is wonderful as is the guitar playing. As a message song, and by extension, as an atheist hymnal it is effective but it leaves a strange and sad hollow afterglow for me, because I want to say that Jehovah has already come down from His mountain in the person of Jesus. He knows the beauty of this earth because He made it. He is not indifferent or ignorant to us, and death is not the end...!!!
To me music is the height of human achievements and Martin Simpson a master. I could listen to his playing all day long. One of my very favourite musicians.
After 50 years as a Catholic (and, for many of those years, a Cathoic school teacher), this is a very sad, but beautiful song. Life after death would be nice wouldn't it? But the truth has to be accepted. Sad, but, that's how it is. Thanks for playing and sining the song so beautifully. Geoffindoncaster
I have never heard a song that makes less sense. You say Paradise is here? One eith of the planet is malnourished. Much of the war is engaged in bloodshed. I hear children cursing their parents, saying, "I have slapped my mother across her face" with much pride. You are telling Jehovah, to descend to the earth, and drink from waters that he gave to his creation to drink. The "spell" here on earth is richer than Jehovah himself will ever know. That contradicts this paradise you speak of.
Then y don u commit suicide? If u really believed life was that bad ud want to end your own surely!
Im a folk-guitar playing teenager from the midlands, and sod it, all of my friends respect their parents, and all of them love life, but have never hurt anyone! The point is:
A-your attack on our youth is un-called for
B-life is beutiful! We are trying to change things-one "eith" of the planet wont always be malnourished!
Regarding the youth that you believe I have attacked; this is something that I have observed. I have seen the composite sign of the last days foretold by Christ in it's realization. This is not an unrighteous attack as you would make it out to be, but it is a recognition of reality, and one that you would do well not to ignore. I'm sorry if my spelling "eighth" wrong bothered you. Typing errors happen to imperfect people, but is it mature on your part to mock me for it?
Im sorry for the mock-i was rather anoyed by your apparent assault on the youth of today!
:P
the point is-your going to stand up, and say humanatie has no goodness in it! Im merely pointing out u have categorised ppl as all wastefull hateful souless thugs, when not everyone is. If you look youl find goodness in everything-and the child who abbused his parents will eventually have justice. And just cos you saw one person gloat about hitting his parents, doesnt meen everyone does it.
Hey Arty....mind your own fucking business. I did not address you so have manners and wait until you're spoken to. I know that youth of today have a problem with that. I appreciate that
admittedly my gob is quite large...but i may have to say, a please be quite is a better than a shut the fuck up, and i just think that everybody desearves a chance to speak. Right, im offski bye
Didn't listen to much of the song, did you youbin? Verse three: Oh, and Devil, come up from your fiery furnace Come up and show us your face There's nothing you can teach us of evil and hatred That we don't have right here in this place There is nothing so evil as man in his mischief There's nothing so lost or insane Bring your demons up too, so we know it's not you But it's us who must carry the blame It's us who must live with the shame
youbintubinallday, what you just described is the signs of the time of the end fortold by Jesus at Luke 21:10,11 (war, pestelince, food shortages, earthquakes in one place after another ext.) The next time one of Jehovah's Witnesses comes to your door, talk to them.
i do, i just think life on earth is too good to waste mulling over things i cant change. i try to help ppl, and in the mean time im gonna have a bit of time to myself. and i belive god is an embodiment of love, as the worst times often bring the best out in peole.
i think you missed the point, as i've said on another video, this song is saying that BOTH heaven and hell are on this earth, we don't need the promises of heaven because of the outstanding beauty of the world and the people we are with, and we don't need the threat of hell, because there is nothing more evil than what can be done by man kind. i hope this clears up the meaning behind this beautiful song.
Im afraid to tell you this but the watchtower society is secretely an organisation as a front for something rather sisnister it is controlled by freemason Enochein magic practicers. Charles T Russel was one and I beg you to do your research go to google and type in Jehovahs witnesses exposed
God I wish I could study that Sobell guitar of his. Martin has played many of the finest guitars ever made, but damn, those Sobells are just the the ne plus ultra of any acoustic guitar ever made. It takes a player of Martin's calibre to really show how fine they are.
I've seen Martin in concert six times. He's so generous with his time, to concertize in so many places. Met him at Healdsburg in '99, where he gave what I'd call a Guitar Philosophy course. It's because of him I build guitars, and Stefan is the luthier I most want to emulate. Players like Martin Simpson, and guitar makers like Stefan Sobell, are the whole reason for this mad pursuit. I've founded my life on what these guys do. Good on Ya, Tom, you know the chant and the rhythm. -edwinson
Hey Tom, did you see essy111's comment? Woo! I've heard Martin preface his playing of old gospel tunes with a side-splitting sendup of his take on religious incongruities. He's been mining rich veins of ore from all sorts of musical traditions since the beginning. But do you agree, essy111 seems to think he's shilling for the evil Jehovahs? Hmm. We should do our research, eh?
common misconception. in the bible god reveals to moses on the mountain his name is actually jehova. god is just lehovas name so the jehova referenced in this song is just god and it is not a dig at the jehovas witness society. martin has always held deep repect for gospel music but did introduce a song the last time the last time i saw him as "a hymn i removed god from because i dont like the wake he talks to george bush"
I can vouch for the quality of Sobell's. Especially the one played in America on his last tour now my proudest possession. And as for Stefan, he spent 45 mins talking about the guitar and i hadn't even brought it from him. And yes Martin is true genius and a gentleman.
I don,t think i,ve ever heard an accoustic sounding this good anywhere well done mr sobell.

Beautiful. Fantastic playing. I was a bit apprehensive at first, being a fan of Chris Wood, but Martin definitely brings something else to it.

Great, sensitive picking, as usual. A genuine British treasure. At times his playing remind me of an old Scottish bluesman, Mr Greatness.
