hey, thanks for posting the vid here using titebond glue. i was wondering what size tank this one is? my guess is, its the same as mine 18x18x24. I'm gonna try using this same glue method myself. you mentioned you plan on having a filter as well as a pump for the waterfall inside the cave. i'm planning on using the exo-terra repti-clear 250 filter which has a feature on the outgoing flow to attach a tube for a waterfall. i'm wondering if it would fit in a cave like yours tho? size is 2" x 5 1/4"
@jhappy4ever I wouldnt use this glue submerged unless you seal it with something. It gets a little soft over time, but doesnt break apart or anything. And it all depends how big you make the cave yourself. I have no clue on that because its you who is making it lol
@jgrimmier hmm, hold the phone a minute here. i just watched your viv build #2 update video. correct me if im wrong but isn't the peat moss, coco fiber, and glue mix you have there covered at the base where the water will be? it looks to me the mixture is covering the entire background all the way down to the base of the vivarium where the water pool will be. did you treat that part with some sort of sealant not covered in the video?
@jgrimmier no, no, i'm of course planning on using my own design for my tank with the exception of the cave which is something i've seen many other people do other than yourself lol. you said you were planning on installing not only a filter, but a fountain pump as well. i just couldn't see how that would be possible with the size of the cave you have there, especially if your tank is indeed the same size mine is 18x18x24 which you still didn't comment on either btw.
@jhappy4ever Yes 18x18x24. The bottom cave is completely open, so there is a lot of room inside. Over the lenght of my wet test run, it stayed hard, but I have a feeling that over a long period of time it will soften. I used the glue as a sealant over some driftwood and it eventually became soft. Not a big dea though because all my frogs and plants are healthy. The titebond webiste says not to be used submerged, so that why I recomend sealing it now.
@jgrimmier oh i see, ok i think i'll heed your advice then and find some sort of a sealant. i guess the best thing for me to do at this point then would be to contact the manufacturer to see if they have any recommendations. i'm a member of vivarium forum too so maybe someone there can point me in the right direction. thanks a lot for your help grim. your the only one i've yet to see post a vid on using the titebond yet btw so thanks again for doing so.
@jgrimmier as far as the glue goes, i dont have experience working with the stuff as you have. although i have seen their website, and from what i've read the stuff is "water based" and "non toxic" and dries rock hard. so no i of course wouldn't have known that the stuff gets soft over time from being submerged but thanks for clarifying that for me.
@jgrimmier no, i know the cave size will depend on the size of my filter which is why i left the measurements of the filter lol. really i was just trying to kinda get a visual comparison as it appears your tank looks like the same size as mine and you said you were planning on installing a filter as well as a fountain pump in yours. great job on your setup btw it looks great.
I have one quick question: how many hours, or how long exactly, do you need to let the great stuff expanding foam dry before you start coating with the titebond 3 + peat moss + coco fiber mixture? I just used GS and not sure how long before I can start coating. Thanks!!
i think you mentioned it but i didnt catch it either of the both times i watched it, the foam is great-stuff foam, correct? im thinking of making a eerily similar viv for my crested gecko (dont worry people the waters not gonna be deep) but ive heard mixxed comments onusing great-stuff foam... Thank you in advanced for any helpful answers!
on second thought, Cresties CAN swim and ive seen it, mine does and i dont want people to get upset about adding water. i know what im doing! i just dont want people getting upset ok.
How long did you wait for the mixture slab to dry out after it was pasted onto the foam? I've waited 24 hours and it's still a bit wet. I used the titebond III method as well. Thanks in advance.
This is GORGEOUS dude!! Those red eye's are gonna love it.. I'm glad you liked my Frog Log Video.. haha.. watch out for escapes, you saw how my White's got out!!
@mxluke01 Did you even listen to the video? I talked about the background covering in the video. And I also have another video with the coating completed.
@ImAmerican95 Egg Crate is used to left the substrate above the water level. It allows the extra water to drain through the bottom and ensures the substrate wont become water logged. I didnt find any eggcrate so I used this plastic cardboared instead and poked holes in it...Little did I know, eggcrates isnt know as eggcrate in stores...They call them "light diffusers" and they are used on fluorescent lighting fixtures.
Ahhh I see, the fly mesh isn't visible since it's fairly dark in the cave area. That makes alot of sense now hahaha! but I still have a feeling a frog might find its way in.. js a hunch
@WeeGeetible As you can see I make everything myself so I'm not sure what you mean by reptile supplie/accesories? Like water dishes and stuff? If you are looking for mechanical parts like filters/pumps/lighting and/or foggers check out Kijiji, craiglist, or local aquarium shops or pet stores.
And no, Red Eye Tree Frogs cant even swim so they never go in water, also the mesh will stop anything from going into the cave.
No there is actually a lot of room in the cave, also under that plastic piece is totally open, so I should have enough room to hide a filter in the cave too.
Once the tubing is in place it is there forever. Its best to test out your pump and tubing in a sink to figure out what height it will be able to pump to. Best is to get a variable flow pump so it wont have to struggle pumping water to the top.
Im not sure you can see in the video, but I also siliconed a piece of black window screen over the cave opening. I only siliconed 1/2 way up to allow me to still get my hands inside to adjust the pump & filter. The main reason for the screen is to prevent my rocks and fish from getting inside the cave and near the mechanical stuff.
Does the water just fall through those holes and into the water? I really like this design but how big is that hole and how did you manage to get that shape?
@WeeGeetible Yeah since I couldnt find the normally used egg crate I used this plastic cardboard instead. I poked a bunch of holes in it, aswell as placed it on a slight angle to help with drainage. Before I put my substrate ontop I will use winow screen to help prevent it from falling in the water.
o_o very interesting design! but how did you manage you get that kinda shape at the bottom? what kinda expandafoam are you using ? please keep us updated!
@WeeGeetible To get the shape I first kept putting the foam down in 2-3 inch layers. The once I had the 2 larger blobs built up, I used the cardboar stuff as a support to go across the blobs. Then I also used smaller pices of the cardboard to use as "legs" to help with the support. I am using Great Stuff Foam.

lilnewk333 1 year ago
@lilnewk333 I have built for people in the past, but the only way I would start a build again is if I received full payment before starting.
The only problem I see is shipping, but that would just cost you a little more. Send me a private message if you are serious.

Would you happen to be able to recommend a site with reasonably cheap prices for reptile accessories and supplies?
Are you not afraid that your frogs may choose to live in the area beneath the plastic?
So the plastic acts as a drainage and excess water goes into the body of water beneath right?

Thaank you for responding :)
I have the basic idea of what your saying so I might need abit of practice with working the foam so I control it well.
With the tubings for a water fall, once they are in place they can't be moved right?
Is the cave spacious? Or does it just look that way but is actually quite filled?

@WeeGeetible
