Students MUST learn how to decode first before they read. Vocabulary expansion IS necessary BUT kids must learn HOW to read first. There are many, many students who suffer from a lack of phonemic awareness in schooling. Also careful your "experts" have a "WHOLE LANGUAGE" paradigm.
