Typical conservative blending facts to suite there arguments. Credit-default swaps started in 2000 by free-market ideologues led by President Bush, Phil Gramm, and Alan Greenspan (I think they are Republicans?)encouraged the explosion of risky new financial products and blocked the products from regulations.
Private financial institutions are to blame for this financial disaster not Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.....do your research!
It was the Democratic Congress that was being well supplied by Fannie and freddie and the evidence is there to prove it! When that loudmouth slob-Barney Frank sat in Congress 12 months ago and said 'Fannie and Freddie is sound and well and doing great, nothin to worry about! He was being paid the S.O.B McCain warned Congress 3 years ago the housing market was going to crash and all the Dems ignored it! And here's Cenk saying it was the Republicans fault.
You really should do some research. McCain didnt have a CLUE about the housing market. All he did was sign on to a bill that was over a year old AFTER news broke that Fannie and Freddie played funny with their accounting. He is on record from December of last year saying he NEVER saw the housing crisis coming. The Dems in early 2007 implemented regulations on Fannie and Freddie that was blocked when the Repubs were in control. Stop being a sheep!
Republicans were not in control in 2007,and McCain's warning to the Senate about Fannie and Freddie was documented in a letter. Why don't you go research it..Stop being a sheep? ha, you're hilarious.
Hmm thats funny... John McCain "warned the housing market was going to crash" but also voted for legislation aimed at deregulating the markets. Talk abt. Country First. BTW go ahead and post a link to some evidence of that letter your're talking abt.
It sounds like we need to make a few calls to the senate or email Barack or McCain or whoever you support. This is the first time I've ever felt like the people will make a difference. I always see people in other countries rioting but at least making a stance. It's our turn to show them that we can riot a different way. I'm not naive enough to think we have the asme conditions, but at least in our own way we can make a difference.
The Dems are mad because they know the Repugs are doing their best to play them, Bush dumped a disaster in their laps and they have to work day and night to do all the work pulling together something reasonable under extreme pressure AND play chicken with the Repugs AND try to win the public PR war at the same time. It blows!!!
The entire economic structure around a set of big-money dealers speaking for the common man to the markets is defunct. The sell side is redundant. The buy side is spread out round the world and not trustworthy as a nationalist force. If free markets were allowed to work, the toxic junk requiring credit support (that they kicked on from 911) can be retired MTM.
I agree... I just don't understand why a conservative should have the right to vote. I'll give people a pass for voting for him in 2000 but if you voted in 2000 and 2004 you had part in destroying this country.
I think he does to some degree but again he's stuck in the position of fighting with those who really don't get it and the Republicans who only care about themselves... don't even get me started with John McCain...
Let's be real. If Obama shows anger, he's labeled as an angry black man. He knows what he's doing. He has to be the civil and level minded amongst the uncivil mavericks. If he pulls a Howard Dean...and I like Howard...he loses all the votes of those on the fence because he's unstable - the same thing they're trying to do to mccain...make him crack.
In light of that, Biden and Obama's surrogates should be the ones making a TREMENDOUS show of anger over the GOP (esp. in this administration) putting the nation in the financial condition it is in. Where is THAT anger?
Break up the republican party into two with a new conservative party to free up the moderate republicans to get back to the old rep. values. I am a democrat but I would rather have a mod republican party watching over us then this conservative maniacal group screwing it up for everyone. Let Huckabee be their spokesman and let them see how far they go without the main stream reps. I may even switch sides and join the moderates if they bring in the likes of Ron Paul!
The Republican party hates America. It hates what we stand for (freedom of thought and expression),it hates our civil liberties and our tolerance of conflicting beliefs.
Since Reagan,it has consistently sided with big corporations and religious bigots. Corporations wish to own us as slaves and religious bigots wish to burn everyone who does not think as they do as heretics. Reagan sold America to the corporations and shipped our manufacturing base(which is the power house of wealth)overseas. .
So the Dems said no to a $700 billion bailout and come back with a compromise bailout of $250 billion. It's still a bailout, and who's to say that 700 billion was even what Paulson wanted in the first place? Let's throw some ridiculous number at them like, say 700 billion, and then dicker until we get the 200 billion we wanted in the first place. Oh snap! We got a $50 billion bonus! Paulson and his buddies laughing it up as they smoke cigars in their exclusive, ex- Goldman-Sachs club.
Cenk, how can you say the republicans will look to be for the little guy when in fact, they are against the bailout because they want even more than what is already on the table, ie. no capital gains taxes for corporations?
The Republicans' plan is like giving an alcoholic a few more drinks for him to fix himself up!! Just a few more drinks, it'll work out by itself. No wait, here's the keys to my Crotchrocket!!
I'm torn on this issue, really, but America might just have to take one up the ass for the team. What will happen if these Wall Street pricks aren't bailed-out? The consequences could be much worse. What do you think?
This bail-out is already under way. There should be a compromise; because almost $1 trillion is obscene. Some are estimating that Paulson's economic plan will require such an amount. Compromise and regulation! Let's not forget, this isn't an exclusively American problem, it is worldwide. Banks in the U.K. are collapsing or being merged at the expense of other banks, European and American. It's easy to say 'screw them,' and rightfully so, but there is too much at stake to do nothing.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Politico just reported that McCain was in Congress this morning at 8am to work on the bailout and Obama was at the gym working out. You can't make up this stuff. Obama is pathetic. I can't beleive he said that if he's needed he's available by cell phone. Thats a leader??? What a joke this guy is.
Whatever!! look Mccain doesn't know what he is doing. He has to put more time for his slowing mind to catch up. There is nothing wrong in exercising. Its like you know when he went to sleep... your reasoning is flawed
you can protect us congressman by saying NO to it. don't let the idiots who caused this to come away from this as the guys who fight for main street when they've been with wall street and socialism for the rich.
For political purposes, obviously the democrats should show more outrage towards this bail out, instead of demonstrating ABSOLUTE COMPLICITY. Having said that, which outcome is worse? Having bailed out the wall street banks, with taxpayers money, the economy might retain stability. On the other hand, a rejection of a bail-out would result in an almost definite and major economic effect, WORLDWIDE. Cenk, it must happen, but it can't be allowed to happen AGAIN.
This is ridiculous. A 700 Billion dollar bailout, which of course in the end will amount to more than trillions of dollars, should not even be considered. Politicians of all ideological persuasions are robbing us fucking blind.
The want to use this to lower capital gains and push for more deregulation. Shock doctrine. Always a crazy agenda and they will exploit a crisis to get it throught. And in this case if Dems don't agree, they walk away from the deal and bury them politically like Cenk says.
I'm not convinced Dems aren't a little pr-Shock Doctrine themselves. Obviously, they're a whole species better than Republicans, but who signed us up for our pro-corporate free trade agreements?
They all are to an extent. The status quo is overall untrustworthy, Republicans are just so far out there that anybody with any sense of decency at all is at least a little better.
Damn, I heard Barney Frank come out of the bailout meeting and complain about how the House Republicans refused to even participate in the meeting.
I think you're right, Cenk. They're playing the Democrats for fools! This is an election season political ploy, and if anything good does come out of it, they will make McCain look like the hero.
I only hope Obama is as smart as I think he is, and he can guide the Dems through this nonsense. We'll see...
both parties suck soooooooooooooooooooo bad. Everyone in america should be allowed to go to zero interest on everything. Credit cards, loans, everything. Pay off principals but get zero interest for past purchases.
Yes, because the banks shouldn't make any money. They should just do their job for free. The sad truth of it is, a lot of these people that are feeling the mortgage crunch right now got a loan that was beyond their means. An ARM is just that, ADJUSTABLE. As in, the interest rate can go up. When it does, you have to pay more. If you're already maxed out paying just the interest on a low rate ARM, what's going to happen when it climbs?
relax Cenk...since no of us were in the meetings how do we know how mad they got...acting all ape S**t on tv will not look like anything but theatrics...
I neither dem nor rep but I love how he dumps this all in the laps of republicans. The democrats want the bailout to continue as planned..Sure they want oversight and no golden parachute but they want the taxpayers to pay for this crap that we didn't help create. We don't need this bailout nor can we afford this bailout.
The Representative is blaming the situation on the Republicans, which is partially true.
The Democrats, however, do NOT want the bailout to continue as planned. The entire line of the Democrats was to stop the original plan an modify it to protect the taxpayers. The Republicans plan is to continue and expand the practices that caused this problem in the first place. Which should we choose?
We should choose no bail out...No money for them..If they are really itching to pay money to someone, why don't they give it to Americans..It certainly would stimulate the economy. Almost 4 grand per person.
That would be interesting, and I think most Americans would buy into that. But that's not the plan put forth by either group. Let's declare "shenanagins", get our brooms, and head to Washington.
What is the other option to avoid this country from really going under further financially other than this bailout ? I don't like this bailout either being paid by taxpayers, but what else can we do? I do think the stipulations placed on this plan are good, plus its giving back in the end to the American people and helping homeowners. It really sucks no one stepped in and stopped these Sob's months ago.
The people who wrote our Constitution were completely aware of these problems. If this country falls apart because they pass this bailout, people will soon start taking their 2nd Amendment rights into more consideration. That right is there for the population to resist tyranny. And I don't know what else to call this but tyranny in its most evil form; the plunder of private property.
forget a bail out, let it come crashing. inflation does not work, it ends in a big boom and most live in huts and some live in mansions. look at how many countries that did it, if you need an example just look at Mexico. I'd rather have my money worth a damn so I work hard and save and I don't need a bank and I don't need any loans. the bankers to over this is one of the things why we escaped from England, there central bank just printed money out of thin air.
This is a desperate attempt to avoid a DEPRESSION. The government will do anything to avoid it. Bankrupt the country? Yes. Corporate tax breaks? Sure.
Nobody wants to lose their jobs, or even starve. But a Depression should occur. Our country needs to start over.
CENK, you have to, HAVE TO, get out there in the mainstream, if it were not for youtube I would have NEVER heard of you. People need a voice like yours, we have so many idiots mind fucked by fox. And to the U.S. public, PLEASE open your minds, vote for Obama, without him we have LITERALY NO HOPE. We will be fucked, economicaly enviromentaly our rights will be fucked. America will be fucked. Anyone watching this who has been moved by it and never voted GO VOTE we can't have 4or 8 more yrs of bush
America, you must DEMAND that there is no bailout! I like Barak Obama and I want him to win this election but I do not agree with him if his position is to support that 700 billion dollar bailout. Do not let those assholes on Capitol Hill trick you with that democrat vs republican shit. The more pressure you put on your local congressmen and women the better chance you have at not getting screwed.
i agree with these guys man. cenk you need to get out there on the TV to combat the numb fuck talking heads. you need a slot on countdown. you need your own show on msnbc man. they could easily put you in right after rachel maddow. we don't need two countdowns, i can certainly deal with only watching kieth once a day. i've gotta have my Cenk man. you should be pushing for this
Republican or Democrat, anyone who votes for this bailout loses my vote for life. Period. We must stop letting the rich privatize the profits and socialize the losses.
You must continue to RAM it through the D's heads cause that guy is completely clueless, how can they not see this coming? and he kinda dissed you Cenk

Well, If worst comes to worst - money loses all value and we end up trading goods again.
Im quite happy to start doing sexual favours for a meal ;)
But seriously;
the way I see it is the banks have lost money which was owned by the tax payer to invest in risky stock.
Because they made the mistake they lost their money.
Why should the tax payer bail them out, and give them their 'golden parachute'.
Screw them! sack them all with no pay.
The government should spend the money on its people.

I totaly understand that. The economies of different countries are so intertwined that it will have a global effect.
however, it shouldn't be burdened on the tax payer.
In the UK, Prime Minister Gordon Brown came straight out to say British tax payers would not be bailing out UK corporations.
I do believe the people who took the risky investments should get nothing; other than the sack.

That would be interesting, and I think most Americans would buy into that. But that's not the plan put forth by either group. Let's declare "shenanagins", get our brooms, and head to Washington.

You are right Cenk...
It looks more of a politican movement from the republican side after the disastrous week in the polls...
remember what Bush said few months ago, the ecomonic was good now what?
trying to pass this bill ASAP wont fix anything but just giving the push Mccain and reps need for the elections...
Rememebr 2004, before the elections the war in iraq scared people and now the economy...
its just tactics, this thing could have exploded earlier why it did now?
weird-calculated..

Republican or Democrat, anyone who votes for this bailout loses my vote for life. Period. We must stop letting the rich privatize the profits and socialize the losses.
