Real wolf.....saw Paul live in Boulder years ago, had real wolf onstage and did howl in key of D flat, as well as humpback whale recording and African eagle, all in D flat..... beautiful
the wolf song howled at the beginning is real- he actually put this piece together after listening to wolves and going and playing the saxophone with them.
@102markmawurds The sound at the beginning is a recording of an actual wolf. Paul Winter used that howl as the foundation for the remainder of the composition. He used the same technique for a number of his works.
Love Paul Winter's music. Was hoping I'd find the song Common Ground here also...Castro-Neves wrote it and the words seem to embody the spirit of Winter's music.
my Dobrador would howl like this wolf does in the intro, every time the local fire station got an alarm and the sirens would start up - no idea what he felt, loneliness or pain or release, but it certainly called out a response in him
Paul Winter was born in Altoona,PA. I don't know if he still has any connection there.I live up in State College, Pa.,Penn State University. I saw him in the late 80's there. He had the lights turned down to almost being pitched black ,and had the audience howl like wolves,for the beginning of this. It was my first time seeing him performed.I was very impressed with his music.
I saw him live in Los Angeles 2 weeks ago..500 ppl howling like mad wolves at a concert..one of the most beautiful compositions ever made...I was blown away..it was one of those moments where I felt I was in a different planet..
Oh. I haven't listened Spanish Angel. Is very difficult to find any Paul Winter music. I'm lookin for Canyon Lullaby. And, I'm thinking to upload Voices of a Planet from my cassete recording.
Oh NO he cut off the part where he actually plays against the life wolf! Darn, ruins the whole thing -

The wolf in the beginning is recorded, the one near the end he is actually playing his saxophone with.

Had this album back in my hippie years. Something brought my mind back to it. Just a shame it cuts off

@danni13371 - is the wolf sound at the beginning the saxophone? or just a recording?
102markmawurds 1 year ago
@102markmawurds
I'm actually not totally sure. All I know is that the sound at from 0:56 onward is a saxophone.

@wscott1950 The end is the wolf and the sax but the wolf finally makes a cry the saxaphone cannot imitate.

I was once an immature young man and then I started playing music.
I listen to it all , as in life I have learned to have no walls or barriers when it comes to listening to music.
I`m from Pennsylvania , nice piece Paul, PAUL
