I love this area. I'm sorry for the people who got kicked out, but it left the place pristine for those of us who visit. But it's an example of a government out of control
I grew up in Layton; some of my relatives and friends lived in Bevans (now Peter's Valley) and Walpack. It is a beautiful and deep part of my past. My family knew Cy Harker and many of the "old timers" who lived in the valley, including the Lennington family. I would like to be added to the email address to keep in the loop on the documentary. Thanks you for all this.
i grew up just up the road in Layton, and recognize a lot of the voices in your film. i knew many people affected by the Tocks Island Dam project. just watching the trailer got me a little teary. great job, and thanks for making this—really hope to see a full-length documentary come out of it. this story deserves one.
I would like to purchase a copy of this documentary, but it doesn't appear to have been completed? Some great footage there - what's the current status? I read on Wikipedia of another film called "Controversy on the Delaware
A Look Upstream at the Tocks Island Dam Project" which I believe was a student project.
i'm a big fan of that area of the united states myself. i grew up in houston tx but as a child i lived in shohola for a few years. i miss the winters and how peaceful it was. some of my family still lives there. that whole area of the pennsylvania is beautiful.
I agree, may not be as beautiful as some epic western landscapes, but with its history and story, absolutely more unique and attractive in my humble opinion.
My Dad's best friend had a hutting cabin just south of the Dingman's Ferry Bridge. I spend a lot of wonderful days running along the creek and paddling the Delaware as a kid.
If you get a moment feel free to check out my "secret falls" vid of the area. Thanks for putting this together. Beautifully shot and narrated.
Thanks for visiting and commenting. I took a min to view your "secret falls" video and I really enjoyed it. Some beautiful images you captured. Thanks for sharing.
Yesterday, my friend and I took a trip down Old Mine Road to Cy Harker's house, and to Walpack Center. The padlock gates are still up by Cy's but when we went there, the one coming from Peter's Valley was opened. Also, I know the Hull's as good friends, so we just went in. We looked at his house for a few minutes and it was beautiful. I think I also saw the tractor he flipped. When we went to Walpack Center, we looked in every building and It was very interesting. I also touched the gas tank too
haha, yeah the gas tank seems to be a Walpack staple as it very much influenced the opening shot if this trailer. I hope the park service and historical society always leave it there and that traveling visitors respect and do not vandalize it.
i live in layton, and this story has never made me more interested in wallpack. ive never known this before. my dad showed me a map of what wallpack used to look like before the project. it was huge! my dad said that if they didnt have the idea it would be the size of like sparta. good luck with your documentary. you can expect me buying a copy ;)
Thanks Wdsloot5, I had a similar situation. I did not know of the Tocks Island Dam Project story until long after High School. My long interest with the river and valley greatly grew after doing some research, one thing led to another and the Ghost Waters project began.

I went to the church (not pictured) opposite the gas pump in your film. My brother. sister & I walked across the mountain to make service, then my dad & mom would meet us by car. Prior to that we went to Saint John's Episcopal in Dingmans until that got torn down. The Van Campen Inn I mentioned in my previous posting stood rickety until the 1980's when the gov't invested money to restore. By then none of the locals were around anymore. I live in VA now, but cherish the river memories.
Thanks for sharing your memories shaken, the river and valley are cherish by many, but it's a great treat to hear individual stories first hand. The little traces that are left inspire me to dig deeper to learn more about the original residents and their stories. I would love to talk to you further about your family's experiences and history in the Delaware Valley.
Your Delaware River video brings back many memories. My family had a place on the river on Old Mine Road on the other side of the mtn were you filmed Walpack Center (North of the Van Campen Inn). Our place no longer exists as it was bulldozed down in 1981 by the Fed Govt part of the Tocks Island Dam Project. Lost many historic homes & many people uprooted. Sad. It was a very tranquil place to live. I especially loved canoeing & fishing on the river. I hope the land never gets developed. I'm 43.
