Was watching Turner Classic Movies one night and they showed a color clip from an old MGM "Travels" show that had Xavier leading the orchestra at the Waldorf . May be the pinnacle of dining elegance.
@2000toddowen Yes, the great night clubs of the 30's-50's, like the Empire Room at the Waldorf or the Persion Room at the Plaza, were the pinnacle!! I lived in NY my whole life (I'm 55), but would loved to have seen my city in the 30's/40's. What I don't understand is why that era's music, culture and style didn't last very long..rocknroll culture has been here for 50 years....but the era of the big bands, slow dancing, classy night clubs, well-dressed, civilized people barely lasted 25 yrs.
@bigcity233 I think it lasted longer than 25 years, but not so mysteriously, the world' population has tripled since the start of WWII. I believe the J curve of upward population explosion had a real effest. For the first time, the younger generation become the majority, and new ( and some not so healthy) tastes were pandered to. Then they were overtly sexualized by the media, and ROMANTICISM became a thing of the past.
@catlec39 I'm not sexualized by the media. for instance, I'm gay and I don't care if the media advertises the "man and woman" propaganda thing to produce more children. I'm sensible. :)
@bigcity233 I have to partially agree with you with abaout not lasting long. but with the new generation and dance shows on tv, we see that its never left and younger crowd learning it. ( i'm 50 )
Mr A, that's like saying an Alfa Romeo 8C is undriveable as it doesn't have power steering, traction control or AC. Please look up the word "patina" and you may have a better understanding of the good things in life.
Excellent, thank you so much. I have just found my patent leather shoes to match what is left of my patent leather hair. Not forgetting the rose between my teeth.
This is a real pretty piece. My parents had it on a 78, way back in the late 40's early
50's. I cannot find it listed on U tube. Done by a full orchestra, and it can bring a tear to your eyes. This piece is ok, but the cut they had was awesome. R.I.P. Good music
