Help please: I had my mower repaired, wasn't getting a spark or anything. Once repaired it worked fine, got my front lawn mowed. Turned it off, went to do my back lawn, but filled it up with fuel first. After filling, never started again. Would it be the spark plug or?
Every engine needs 3 things to run: Compression, Ignition, and Fuel.
While you have the spark plug off, you might as well check the compression, if you have a compression tester. Otherwise I completely agree with forku2umf, the easiest thing is to spray starting fluid into the air filter and see if it runs for a few seconds, because that narrows it down to fuel as the problem, and you eliminate Ignition and Compression as problems.
ok so i bought a lawn mower off of craiglist it worked fine for three weeks then as i was cutting the grass it stopped when i tried to start it again instead of starting it leaked gas under the gass cap does anyone know what the problem can be?
@thebrokefoot You have a safety switch bad. There is one for the seat, one for the blade engagement and one for the clutch (pedal). Probably the clutch switch. Hard to find. Take it to a GOOD shop. Ask the mechanic what he thinks. If he/she says it's the carb, go elsewhere. If you pull/engage the choke as it dies and it starts to run good, it IS a carb problem. If it dies immediately when you let cluch out and/or engage blade, you have a bad safety switch. internationaldave@gmail.com I can help
Quick troubleshooting: Remove air filter. Spray flammable carb cleaner or a shot of fresh gas into carb. Pull rope. If it runs for a second or 2, you have spark and compression. You have a fuel delivery problem. Clean tank, line and carb and not 1/2 ass cleaning the carb. If green and/or stinky inside, take it off and soak it in carb clean. There is more to cleaning a carb than just the bowl nut. Idle circuit, too. His plug sparked white. Must be blue. His plug was white, lean condition.
if you dont use your engine for lets say about 26 days and then i started using it would i still have to replace it or would it be ok plz reply i need to know because im not goin to be using mine for a while
I need to know what is to repair. For instance, what is wrong with this lawn mower and how do I repair it? (you tube search "mower sputtering" and watch video of a lawnmower that sounds like mine - this postings wouldn't let me add the actually w w w. address) Telling me how to repair something doesn't help if I don't know what to do in the first place.
just because there is spark does not mean the plug is good, i have seen plugs that spark but they were weak and that causes problems with running as well.funny he did not seem to pick on the carb, float bolw carbs are usualy the first thing i go after, as the jets clog up alot on them and floats can leak hence engine dont run or run very well.primer bulb leaks again engine dont run or runs crapy.brake cables do ware out or seize up hence engine dont run, gas does lose octane levels over time.
That the gasoline will be bad after 30 days is rubbish. All petrol stations could close...
Parking a car for approx. 3 months causes also no troubles... and also spare cans with petrol are stowed several years in trunks of cars.
That the spark plug indicates sparks is in deed only a indication that the ignition system is working, but does not indicate a good ignition plug! Replace the spark plug in any case (less money) - It could function during cold conditions but looses function at hot.
@Gifti1234 you talk bollox mate, fuel goes off enuff in 6 to 8 weeks for it to affect a mower and to say you can store it for several years is utter crap!! i work on mowers etc 365 days a year and know what im talking about
I have accidentally used fuel for the mower that contains some oil that is used for 2 stroke engines and I am now having trouble starting the mower. Any advice would be appreciated.
@Hoff28659 you probably need to clean out the carburator now. those 4 stroke carbs are not made to have mixed gas going throught it. the result of using 2 stroke gas in a foustroke for a while: clogged jets etc.
@nonamejoe56 Help, nonamejoe! While turning my grandmother's lawn mower on its side to clean out the grass, gasoline leaked out onto the exterior and started smoking...alot. It finally stopped but now I'm afraid to start it back up. If fuel got into the motor (or anything else) will it catch fire, or worse, blow up? The mower is practically brand new. I'm in big trouble with my grandmother. You seem to know your stuff and I would appreciate your advice. Thank you. :)
@BRANDY82375 Sorry it has tooken me so long to reply. You probably just got some oil in the combustion camber. Don't worry, it will not catch fire, explode, or anything like that, the gas will simply evaporate. If its a newer mower the worst that can happen is smoke. Let it run awhile, if after 5 min this is still burning oil, reply to me. What make is it? Tecumseh (aka Eager1) or Briggs or Stratton?
I have the Honda brand mower only 1 year old bought from friend, work couple of time, but now can't start. Can you give me advise what can I do please. Thanks
This video was great ! My mower was stalling and this video helped me solve the problem. The plug in the carburetor bowl had a small piece of debris that restricted the fuel flow. Thanks Mark !!!

check your gap on the mower. should have a .030 gap. if your gap is more the engine compression is causing the combustion not to jump the gap. if that is not your problem check idle on carb.
my wife put the oil in the wrong place where the prime button is in that black container and the oil has gone through all the parts i guess every where that the gas goes what should i do ?
I have someone cut my grass ~ and btw, I'd never put 'bad' gas into my automobile gas tank....what sense does that make....particularly if its bad ?

yamaharules163 1 year ago
@ogcancer your carb could be clogged clean all your little ports in the carb make sure the float isnt stuck
AfricanCichlidguy 1 year ago
Your Carb jets could be clogged, this is most likely the problem.
You will have to remove the carb and clean it.
Because you keep pushing the bulb that indicates the carb is jets are not working properly.
If you can, I suggest that you get 2+2 carb cleaner.
Also, check your fuel filter if you have one.

check your gap on the mower. should have a .030 gap. if your gap is more the engine compression is causing the combustion not to jump the gap. if that is not your problem check idle on carb.
pinkyrie2003 2 years ago
you have a clogged carburetor, when you hit the primer bulb you act as a fuel pump for the engine, while the carb itself isnt.
