    --kye

  • Hi Kye! I made well over 30 complete homemade comics as a youngster, and created hundreds of characters and thousands of pages of artwork.

    -- Matt

  • great stuff! reminds me of myself!

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • Omg, I love seeing your pictures of how you hold your pencil when you were young, So cool. I drew like you to back in my age, but worse.Half of the time it looked like that I had a spazzm while I was drawing a picture. I LOVE THE JACK NICHOLSAN JOKER! AND THE COMICS, AND THE RIDDLER AND THE PENGUIN, AND EVERYTHING FROM SINCE YOU WERE ZERO TO 20!

  • Thank you very much for the kind words! I still have a lot more art fom past years, as well. I had to be selective to make the video a manageable length.

    -- Matt

  • matt it seems u have always been very good u should really think about starting your own comic book your the best artist ive ever seen no joke

  • Thanks for the very kind words!

    -- Matt

  • This is the coolest i wish i was that good.

  • Thanks, Andrew! You will get better the more you draw. As you can see, my art changed drastically over time.

    -- Matt

  • your a pro!!!

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • how do draw from your head so good i can only draw by looking at something and im 17 and sure as hell cant shade like that yet any tips

  • Hi! I really am not that good at explaining how I draw like I do. Basically, I just kind of imagine what I intend to draw and then start drawing it. The picture never looks exactly as I envision it, but sometimes it gets close. As for shading, thye thing to keep in mind is lighting and textures, and using thinner and thicker lines to denote depth. Thanks for the kind comment!

    -- Matt

  • My God...You had amazing detail in your early teens...I still cant shade that well!

You developed so fast so eary...My art didn't take off until about...7 years ago at age 15? When I finally found my niche in Manga. God, man...The backgrounds are amazing...

  • Thank you for your very kind words! I really appreciate it!

    -- Matt

  • Dude, i have been drawing cartoons since i was a kid too, im 22 now and i wish i could draw comic book style, please tell me how you did it

  • Hi! I wish I could explain how I draw the way I do, but I really don't know how to explain it. Thanks for the comment!

    -- Matt

  • that was really cool, i like the first picture of you lol

  • Thank you very much!

    -- Matt

  • wow amazing progress! who was the little boy in the later photos? he's so cute.

  • That's my nephew, Brett. Thanks!

    -- Matt

  • Ah, this shows a lot, and it gives hope to a lot of artist out there that are just starting to know even professionals start out with something that isn't perfect.

Great collection of work man, keep up the good work, ^^.

  • Thanks! -- Matt

  • hi matt,

why don't you work as a comic artist i mean u are obviously a master on the field of comics. i have also one question: how many years does is take to get to a professional level if u are just starting out?. thanks in advance

  • I think the time depends on the person. As you can see in this video, I started very young. I would not say that I came close to being professional level until I was 17, but that would be different, I'm sure, if I started at an older age. Thaks for the kind comment! -- Matt

  • I'm 16 and I have all was thought of my self as a good artist, but seeing your art opened my eyes.

My skill level is about as equal to you when you where 9.

Maybe I have ben playing to much video games these past couple of years?

You have bean a inspiration and I plan to start drawing more.

    Thank You!

  • Thank you very much! -- Matt

  • u really do evolve!

  • Thank you very much! It shows, I guess, that practice can make a difference. The older I got, the more I observed that which was around me. I appreciate you watching and commenting! -- Matt

  • Matt,

I really enjoyed watching your artistic progress through the years. Your slide show was priceless!

Thanks for the entertainment! From a little old lady in Pasadena.

    Dee

  • Hi Dee! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks! -- Matt

  • Such a cutie wutie pie! OMG! Awesome video!!!! Your art is REALLY good. I am a true fan of your artwork, not just your comedy. (I am a huge fan of that too!) Keep it up! Yaaay!

  • Thank you very much, Zookiemommy! I'm always happy to read your comments. -- Matt

  • Did you ever get anything published with any of the comic companies?

  • Hi! I haven't, yet. My work has been published in "Comics Feature" magazine, though. -- Matt

  • You can see you got your unique pen holding style at an early age. Great stuff

  • Thanks! Yep, I've always held my pen like that. -- Matt

  • (Alt. title could be: Portrait of the artist as a young man). Seems like your work started to transform around 15 and by 16 you were practically at professional level. (then kept honing/refining your skills) Thought I saw a strong Perez influence around 16/17.

(Looking forward to seeing what you self-publish)

  • Thank you very much! George Perez is certainly an influence, and one of my all-time favorite artists. -- Matt

  • can u tell me how to do this? or like where to start or something? cuz i wanna do stuff like this

  • Do you mean the editing? I'm not really good at explaining how to do things, but I use a video editing program to put the images together. Thanks! -- Matt

  • nonono i mean the drawing.. heh heh heh its really hard. ur my idol when it comes to drawing though!! and i just wondered if u could tell me how to get started.

  • In know it sounds cliche, but the best thing to do is draw, draw, draw. As you can see, I started pretty young, and age and experience and practice all helped to make me grow as an artist. Also, you should observe things in real life, scenery, people, etc., and think about things like perspective and anatomy. Thank you so much for watching! I appreciate it! -- Matt

  • Dang, if I started reading comics at the age you did I'm sure that my drawing skills would be much more refined at the momment.

Great work video, it really gives a deep look into where your skills came from.

  • Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it, AlphaProto! -- Matt

  • nice

  • Thank you! -- Matt

  • I am totally impressed! Beautiful evolution.

  • Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind words! -- Matt

  • This almost made me cry :P

  • :-) Thanks for watching! I appreciate it! -- Matt

  • wow man when your first comic is published i am buying 10 coppies to spred out your talent: Eric

  • Thank you very much, Eric! -- Matt

  • one more thing i wanted to ask you did you ever create a superhero with a new kind of superpower

  • Well, I do have one that could inflate differnt parts of himself. It's kinda silly, but he was a fun character. It's hard to come up with a truly unique ability, but I have made vairiations of known powers that were a bit different in how they were used. -- Matt

  • First off, as an artist myself, it's always great to see how someone developed over their life. Secondly. Wow, man... It looks as though you were doing kiddie drawings one day and BAM! All of the sudden you are an AMAZINGLY skilled comics style artist! I'm blown away, man. GREAT VIDEO! And I'm jealous... I've never mastered the comic style...

  • Hi Buliwif! Thanks for the kind words! I'd love to see some of your art! When choosing what art to display on this video, I mainly used art that was dated. I can tell what year most of my stuff was drawn by the style, but there are a few that I couldn't swear by, so I passed on using them in the video. I had literally over a thousand pages to go through. Thanks again! -- Matt

  • Wow thanks for sharing this with us.

It was very exciting seeing how you developed your style thru the years.

And in the end of the video the drawings gets more of your personal touch.

I have read a lot of comics in my life, but never felt for drawing that way myself.

Keep up the good work, and looking forward to seeing more.

  • Thank you very much! I appreciate it! -- Matt

  • Thank you very much, Barrison! -- Matt

  • Thanks for the kind words, Darkshodopan! -- Matt

  • I'll say it again, your worst drawing on your worst day is better than my best drawing on my best day! Great video. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thanks, Larry! -- Matt

  • awesome video your the best drawer ive ever talked with in my life :P but who is that kid your holding at 15-16 years old? is that your own child?

  • Hi Adam! That child is my nephew, Brett. Thanks for watching, and the kind words! I appreciate it! -- Matt

  • hi again matt, whats a nephew?

    //Adam

  • Hi again, Adam! A nephew is the son of a sibling. In this case, the boy is my brother's son. -- Matt

  • It was obviously in your blood, because already at age 3, you did a damn fine snoopy. It annoys me that you were a better artist at 14 than I will ever be. And who is that kid that shows up when you turn 15? Sibling?

  • Hi Magnulus! Thanks for the kind comments! That boy is my nephew, Brett. He turns 21 this month. I feel so very old. :-) -- Matt
