Just saying, I am the lady that works with the speed dating crew, and I appreciate the concern for the mocking term. But hopefully we all watched the show, and saw that it did not mock anyone, it just told the story
Hi there! Thanks for stoping by. I did get to catch the show and I was really happy! It had a lot more positive vibe then what the trailer gave and was reeally cute.
I made a new video later mentioning how cute it was and was different then how I thought the trailer made it out to be.
haha the word Geek isn't offensive. Definitely not like the N word, wow. Everyone is a geek is some way. It's whatever you go crazy for - Star Wars Geeks, Zelda Geeks, Dragonball Geeks, even Soccer Geeks, Film Geeks. Haven't you guys ever said, "Hang on, lemme geek out for a moment." :p
Sounds like the show is just generalizing "geeks" or "nerds" to be socially awkward people, when of course that's not the case. TV is TV. Look how MTV reality shows make people look haha.
I think that they show the most extreme people of the geek world for entertainment value. Obviously there are very normalized people in the convention world, but there are also (as this show exhibits) people who are a bit out of touch with reality, and that is what they choose to show the most of.
Now MTV is creating a new show on the culture of cosplaying and people who are really intense about their fandoms called Fandom Rising. I am thinking of applying for that show...
I saw the show last night and I thought it was very cute. It takes geeks in their natural environment (cons), hosted by a geek, and pushes them to take an opportunity that they might not have taken. While they don't go out of their way to teach any lessons to viewers at home, it makes a good documentary.
I don't think they were making fun of/bullying the culture of Graphic Novel, Video Game, Japanese Culture, etc. Aficionados. Television tends to magnify the aspects of peoples personalities no matter how bitchy, mellow, or mean that might be. I see your frustration though. The "We're looking forward to what we think will be hi-larious", "the reality of the romantic challenges these individuals face". Sounds like a complete insult about socially in-ept people even if it wasn't mean't to be. <3
i go to comicon every year and i was the girl who played bettie page and believe me you have it ALLL WRONG! it's not like that.that was not the point of the show. they are not bullying or targeting "geeks/nerds" and some ppl i feel actually found love and friendship, oh and it was not scripted, i can assure that to you. it's really not a big deal. they were not making fun of geeks. btw, don't ever classify urself as a geek, ur an individual, not a can of soup.
I work with Ryan, and he actually met his girlfriend while he was doing one of his speed datings which he created. So he is definitely not 'making fun' of the culture. He's a wonderful person and he enjoys everything about it.
i think the series will do fine, and that they are just putting the most lively parts into the commercial so people will check it out. some of the people there sounded down to earth about finding a relationship :P
I personally find nothing offensive by that trailer. I find it actually talking about people who are fully dedicated to everything Comics, cartoons, games, anime, etc. I know people who are into those things sort of but they are not socially awkward like you were stating how you are a geek and you are not socially awkward. I think its usually the parents fault for raising there kids wrong to have someone be socially awkward. I know people who are not nerds and are awkward. So nothing wrong here.
Hi, I'm actually on the show and I think I can offer a unique perspective. The trailer that is out is very much to bring in people who don't understand the culture. But, during the filming the producers and such were all about the relationships built during that time. I think that the show will start with that hook but end up being about the relationships. The new commercials that just started airing yesterday do a better job at making it look less exploitative. Plus I'm in them haha
@nekocloe I removed my comment because I felt as if I was speaking for everyone. And I don't know how everyone else feels, but Sal and I found it a positive experience.
I'm glad that you guys got something out of the experience.
My intention was not to draw attention to the "geeks" featured in the video as being made fun of but more of how I thought(opinions and not fact :) ) the TLC trailer was viewing the culture as a whole. I believe there's always 2 sides to everything, but then again I could be wrong, or we could both be right.
Never the less I would be happy if the series came out good :)

Your comment gave me a nice laugh :) (the last couple of comments)
My main concern was that I didn't approve so much which way I felt like this particular trailer was magnifying the show.

I don't think they should use the word geek or nerd, they're pretty much the same as the n word, only worse

agreed although...what else should they call us without it turning into a 5 world explanation/definition :)

I felt awkward watching that trailer.
Like... more awkward than fighting Shadow Rise in Persona 4. And that's sad.
