I personally don't think this version is bad; granted I'm a bigger fan of his ballads. The fiddle adds a very different touch--sounds similar to George Strait's early honky-tonk stuff.
He has his flair at the end, especially with a more emotional voice comparative to his '85 Hee Haw performance..
I'd debate whether or not I'd take this version or the '85 Hee Haw version over the classic record.
@pianoandstuffcyclone SOOO??? Until about 70 years ago it was EXTREMELY COMMON for 13 year old girls to marry. Also, WHO CARES??? Don't you WISH TO MARRY A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL? I KNOW I DO. I WANNA MARRY 250 OF THEM! YEAH!
Who cares what he is acting like. Looking at the man standing still was good enough. Hee Haw was a good show by the way. I grew up on it and I AM COUNTRY FOLK AND DAMNED PROUD OF IT. Hee Haw was corny. There should be more corniness back in TV again. Maybe people would get a hold of their values a bit better nowadays. During that time...people could laugh without having the whole picture drawn out for them...they got the jokes without the pictures.
This clip is from the TV series "Hee Haw" which was a corny/silly country variety show. Jerry Lee no doubt had to compromise is R & R song to conform to the show's TV audience of primarily country folk, hence the fiddle. I'd venture to guess Jerry Lee was not very enthusiastic about messing up his favorite song this way, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to make a living. Besides, country music & country music fans were his bread & butter at the time.
omg that band in the background looks weird. first their outfit... and then: it's a fucking rock'n'roll song... why are they standing like they would play on a funeral ?!?
and what's up with the guy with the fiddle?!? that fiddle really doesn't fit that song.
JLL is great, but for some reason he does seem a bit stiff... but guess i would feel the same way with these guys in the background...

"that guy" didnt marry a girl. a kid about twenty years younger did. if you didnt do worse when you were young, you wasted your youth.
