I only really watch movies on my computer, and on there is keeps the same aspect ratio. So for my, it doesn't get cut off. I sorta assumed that was the same for most other things too...

ha, I was told not to watch widescreen images in fullscreen, a couple months later an over-priced TV company hooks us up with some really nice internet and some lack luster channels that are only shown in fullscreen unless you pay extra.

can't wait to get something like an apple, or google TV.

I just compared two films. They were both shot in 2.35:1. On my iMac they looked the same, but on the TV the black bars were bigger on one of them. what does that mean?

@skrikon Your iMac must be already on 16:9 aspect ratio which is the standard for any HD video and your TV must be in something bigger

@skrikon the screen on your tv and screen on your imac have different ratios then. if your tv is 4:3 and the mac 16:9 then the black bars on your tv will be bigger

Why don't you shoot your frames using 1.33:1, but frame them as if they're 2.35:1? That way, you can optimize your film for 2.35:1, but they'll look good on ANY size screen, and nobody will have black bars on their screen regardless of the dimensions of their screen? I dunno, this just seems obvious to me that the film industry should shoot all films that way.

@reebanoomba it's quite simple really. 17.8:1 and 16:9 is the same thing. multiply 1.78 by 9 and you get 16, multiply 1 by 9 and you get (drumroll) 9. 16:9 is just an easier way to say it cus you don't bother with decimals.

Question. Do you want to make your movie in FCP/FCE4 and then export it as a film and then import it back into the program to apply the aspect ratio to the entire film or is it best to apply it to each scene individually before exporting and only exporting once?

... also for everyone that is interested in working in their makeup contest I would recommend using oatmeal. I've seen this effect before and it can bring out some great texture depth for your talent's face. (IF BUDGET IS AN ISSUE. OTHERWISE GO WITH SOME LATEX AND UTILIZE SOME GREAT MATERIALS TO MIX IT WITH ie crunched up dry leaves... GET CRAZY!)

I love wide screen myself because it resembles the golden rectangle which is just a more interesting composition theory; however my question is concerning your method of applying aspect ratios. It seems that you are shooting in full screen and applying wide screen filters. My problem with this method is that you are essentially losing 15%+ of your picture. So if you know what ratio you like to film in... I would recommend shooting in that ratio before hand and capturing it in that format.

There is still the widescreen bars on HD tvs as well. Hd tv is 1.78:1 where most films are shot 2.35:1.

in Adobe Premiere in the Projects window go to Effects-Video Effects-Transform--choose CLIP (not Crop). this will mask the video image. you can change the color if you don't want black. i find that the setting of 11 (top and bottom)matches most other letterboxed videos
