This is superbly beautiful. Unfortunately, much of the language in the original had to be omitted. It is indeed some of the most sublime prose ever written in the English language. See Guilitis' reading of the chapter
Come follow me, wayfarers all..." man it is so tempting to let the music lead you off on an adventure... I can understand how Ratty was hypnotised into following... thank you for uploading this.
Just watched this for the first time in nearly 20 years. Have often thought of it, and it was as haunting as it was when i was eight! Whoever found it, thank you for giving me a piece of childhood back! That sounds really trite, and I hate people that gush on here, but that's what it felt like!
This is a hauntingly beautiful episode with sublime music. The 80's was a high point for childrens t.v, - unfortunately it was all downhill from there.
The sea song is totally enchanting. It's so emotive and yet there's this sprinkling of psychedelic glimmering sounds mixed in with that faraway-sounding enigmatic flute tune. It is indeed like being hypnotized.
Can't help being captivated by this utterly beautiful but haunting music... The allusion to the ephemeral nature of life and man's yearning to explore uncharted lands resonates deeply with many of us grown-up children I dare say.
A warm "thank you" to SueStar for sharing this childhood treasure. :))
Over 100 years old still alive! I love the Wind in the Willows and like us all it takes me right back to my childhood and seeing it now through older eyes i can see how i was so absorbed in the magic of this show...and i remember this song too from 20 years ago...the song was actually the reason i came looking for the episode. I remembered the story and took a stab at the title here on youtube and thanks to SueStar here it is :)
Do you have "The Open Road Again" where toad finds Alfred the horse and gets a bicylce? I can't find it- would love to see it and complete my playlist that I'm creating with all the series in their original order. :)
Thats exactly what happend to me for the two weeks after watching this episode, the producers did a great job in transforming this chapter from the book into a TV episode
This really does take me back, not sure why i looked for this in the the first place. The seafarer's mention of "the Grecian isles and the Levant" and venice, is somthing i've not forgotten in, what,.. i think its 18 years. Catching the first few words of his soliloquy (a contradiction - he Was talking to Ratty) I was able to recite it word for word, what the hell are kids watching these days anyway?.
"With golden days and balmy nights, sleeping in some cold temple or ruin during the heat of the day, and after sun down, feasting and singing under the great stars set in a velvet sky." ....wooow...a grand picture of adventure...
To all appearances, the summer's pomp was still at its height. But the green was beginning to give way to gold. Rowans were reddining and the woods were dashed here and there with thorny fierceness. the Robin, faithfuk in winter and summer alike was beginning to assert himself once more but overhead Ratty could here the beat and quiver of impatient wings obedient to the call of the South. <---What a lovely play of words. It just sets ones imagination going.
"When the sea voice calls I must obey... And the rolling tide draws me away... White horses, setting courses, to a distant shore, so, come follow me, Wayfarers All. Sea-rover I shall always be... Ten thousand stars for company... Through the islands, low-and-high lands, Way to o'er Bengal, Come follow me, Wayfarers All. And now I yearn to travel on... You'll surely follow where I've gone... Your longing is strong enough, Now heed the call! Come follow me, Wayfarers All..."
Lovely to see this episode again, It was always on of my favorite chapters of the book, left out in the original animation just like the piper at the gates of dawn" Maybe on eday i will get the full dvd set.....
Do you have the 1/2 hour -making of the wind in the willows documentary, I would love to see that again
Many thanks for this. I only ever saw this episode once as a child, but the song in the middle has never left me. I thought I was the only person in the universe who still remembered it!
FWIW, a record was produced of music from the series back in the 80s, but sadly the "Wayfarers All" song was not included on it.
I remember seeing this episode as a kid. Together with "The piper at the Gates of Dawn" it formed the two most powerful stories that have influenced my life. It struck me some time ago, that the Wayfarer and the Piper aretwo manifestations of the same God type that lies at the heart of life on the Riverbank: around which every other event in the "Willows" stories revolve. The Wayfarer is God-as-trickster. The Piper is God-as-nurturer / protector. Two faces of Pan.
I can't thank you enough for uploading this episode! My sisters and I used to watch it on VHS all the time when we were little. The music is incredible, especially the seafarer's song :)
Please tell me where can I find this song? What's the artist singing it in the movie ? Or is there any soundtrack with it I can get? I don't want any rock versions. I have spent hours trying to find it!!!
I believe the singer (voice of the seafarer) is the late Jack May, also known as Nelson Gabriel from "The Archers". Would also love to get a soundtrack
The song in this is spookily enchanting. This whole episode is kind of weird. The Wayfaring Rat is kind of like the Pied Piper, hypnotizing Ratty. Kind of creepy, but another great episode of WitW!
I love this episode, mainly because of the song. It's beautiful, and yet haunting at the same time.

no offence to peter sallis (aka rat in this episode) but i preferred rat with the movie voice. This voice is best for wallace not ratty

Ratty isn't a rat at all. He's a European water vole.

@Gunganfan Correction: Water RAT. There's a difference. Though this model does look like a Water Vole.

Yeah, that's Jack May. Also the voice of Igor in Count Duckula, I think...

@BenBanjo87 Yup - I was pretty stunned to hear him in another Cosgrove-Hall show, especially since this pre-dates Count Duckula by a few years.
