I biked in the street and in a sidewalk depending on judgement. If the sidewalk is free just bike slowly even walk with the bike if you have too you don't go as fast but atleast safer than a single mistake on road that would end under the wheel of a vehicle. If your a old timer or not physically fit to bike toe to toe on the road why not. I believe sidewalk and road biking should be a choice for the cyclist. I have many close call biking on the road, I hate educating every single bad drivers.
It seems that the city of San Francisco is hungry for money and are coming up with ideals to generate more revenue in any means they can on the people that live or visit there beware and watchful of your surroundings there most likely is someone watching YOU so they can give you a ticket.
0:54 The guy is absolutely right. I think you should be able to ride on the sidewalks if you do it cautiously enough. If you come into come into contact with somebody then you'd be at fault but its way too dangerous. I recommend maps.google.com, the suggest bike routes. You can also share your input and suggest better areas to ride than others and google can change their bike maps.
why is there so much hatred for cyclists? As a car driver sometimes I think it would really be nice to be able to ride my bike to do errands or go to work instead of sitting in boring traffic, but it's just too scary because not only are there bad drivers out there, but there are people who really hate cyclists and drive aggressively toward them. It's such a shame, and a loss for drivers who could be enjoying the city streets instead of plowing through it.
@liutenghou I ride my bike and I also DRIVE a car. Quite frankly, bike riders are NOT supposed to be riding on the sidewalk. If they are on the sidewalk, they MUST WALK their bikes at all times because they are risking a potential collision with pedestrians and those who are disabled. Especially the risk of collision is greater with young children and the elderly who are not even aware of these dangerous bicyclists breaking the laws by speeding and riding on the highly congested sidewalks.
Cyclists these days are idiots. I've seen more and more run red lights and endanger themselves. Problem is when they get hurt in those circumstances, they wail and cry that a big bad car hit them. You want to be on the road - you obey the traffic laws. It's pretty simple. I know it's hard to get that into your bong residued brains, but one can hope.
I'm a full time bicycle commuter. I know the laws and follow them.. I watch motorist run stop signs, passing me as I stop... I've questioned many motorist about the laws... Not one motorist knows where to stop at a stop sign... So, in my world motorist are stupid people... Before you reply, come to Minneapolis and ride with me.... I've also riden in 5 states and I know the laws in all of them....I've also driven in 20 states.. also know the laws too. They are on state web pages...
Studies show: Driver-to-cyclist MISTAKE=FATALITY for cyclist Cyclist-to-pedestrian MISTAKE=INJURY for pedestrian Abuse the ROAD someone will die! Abuse the SIDEWALK someone will hurt! Fatalities to pedestrians=drivers Fatalities to cyclists=drivers Sharing the ROAD with DEADLY drivers should be done by experienced or inexperience persons by CHOICE not force. ALL HUMANS MAKE MISTAKES! MISTAKE on SIDEWALK=INJURY MISTAKE on ROAD=FATALITY INJURY vs. FATALITY, CHOICE=FREEDOM
There is nothing wrong with cycling on sidewalks (unless they are crowded). The rules are simple... yield to all pedestrains, treat driveways as if they were intersections, and yield to traffic at intersections. Often sidewalks are safer than the roads.
A frightening number of car driver do NOT look for bikes and frequently put cyclists lives at risk.
Cyclists go on the pavement for safety or stay on the road and ride more and more aggressively.
Car drivers pick up on the agression and become hostile which furthers the lengths riders use to keep safe, that includes running lights, signs, verbal and physical responses to bad driving.
Sort the car elements out and the rest will vanish.
I'm all for better designated bike lanes, but make bicyclist pay for them. Issue bike licenses for 16 and over, carry a liabilty insurance and pay a yearly registration fee. They want use of the road, then PAY FOR IT!
True that. I've been in seven accidents up to date, one of which was my bad (I was riding on the sidewalk) partially. The reason why I say partially is because the pedestrian was stealing a shopping cart, swerving left and right on the sidewalk to make sure no one passed her, talking on the phone, all while looking at the stores that passed her.
Vehicles do hit cyclists, though. I am actually considering proposing a liscence re-cert where it's required to look before turning.
Side walks are only reserved for pedestrians and disabled people. Cycling is not allowed and neither should skateboarders be allowed to use the sidewalk at all. Rollerblading are generally discouraged on sidewalk as they are a high risk for collision with pedestrians.
if you are riding at a very slow pace, it shouldn't be a huge deal. fact: if you bump someone on the sidewalk, going at a slow pace, the worst that will happen is a bruise...
boo fucking hoo!
if i am forced to ride on the street and
get hit by a 2000 lb.+vehicle, I AM PROBABLY DEAD. helmet or no helmet!
so the problem stems from crazy fast-riding bikers darting in and out of pedestrians.
how bout this: NO PEDESTRIANS ON THE ROAD, pedestrians must buy hovercraft boots to cross the road.
So many cyclists think they're the kings of the road. I've yet to see a cyclist stop at a stop sign, and every cyclist I've seen run red lights whenever he had the chance.
better road planing WHICH considers cyclists would help too, would it not? Why not more and wider bicycle lanes? why not also crack down on drivers who abuse cyclist by assaulting with their cars on a daily basis?
How about a wider crackdown on bicyclists who run stoplights/stop signs on a daily basis and then pound on cars because they complain they aren't given a fair share of the road. Or any number of other illegal things bike riders do.
so long as there is an equal "crackdown on 'MOTORIST' who run stoplights/stop signs on a daily basis..."
MOTORIST one can see on a daily basis engaging in this traffic infraction as well as: driving drunk; talking on cell phones; texting; eating messy food; arguing with passengers/kids in back seat; music too loud; car/motorcycle pipes too loud; putting on makeup; getting/giving blow jobs...all of which anyone has seen, one time or another
so long as there is an equal crackdown on motorist

This is simple cause and effect.
I drive AND ride. [contd]

Actually you are 2 times as likely to get a concussion from riding on the sidewalk than riding on the street.
Really, if you aren't stupid, riding on the street is generally safe. I've been riding for a long time, and have yet to have been hit by a car.
Most people who are scared of getting hit by a car on the road, haven't been cycling on the road.
Sidewalks are designed for pedestrians, and you can easily hit them. They could report you and you gotta pay a fine.
