Well they can get extremely hot, even the base gets scorching.

I would definitely recommend not leaving them on unattended. Mine gets way too hot to handle or even touch after just one hour...

thats weird. i have a blue, red, and green lava lamps and they all act the same way as yours- blue has the most spheres, red seems to have the biggest lumps, and green is depends on what day it is.
