  • My elkhound Thor does that too! He'll snowplow with his nose. It's adorable.

  • My elkhound, Quisha, would tunnel under the snow too. We've had 4 elkhounds so far, and they are all wonderful. What a cutie!

  • oh yeah! This looks like our elkhounds Cy and Emma! They do love the snow and they are best dogs! I love all dogs but elkhounds rule!

  • Odin is just like my Elkhound Isis. They are fab dogs

  • he is so cute

  • I LOVE THESE DOGS! Rain, sleet, and snow slide right off their fur like nothin! Can't wait to buy my male elkhound!

  • How do these dogs handle a warm humid summer? Cosmetics aside, I suppose a summer shave of the fur is in order? I live in MN.

  • @paulsballsify I lived in Michigan with mine. He did great, granted summers weren't his fav. But once winter hit, he was outside and loved it.

  • @paulsballsify Had mine in Australia. Their coat insulates. Remember they don't sweat they pant so the heat doesn't matter too much but they do love the cold.

  • Most gorgeous dogs on Earth. Born for Minnesota snow!! Our Tikka loves to ski with me at -25F, no joke.

  • Most gorgeous dogs on Earth. Born for Minnesota snow!!

  • love these dogs.... we live in Florida so I shave mine most of the year but when we visit family up north for Christmas I always let him get his full coat so he can play in the snow... he's an older boy now but he still turns into a puppy time there's snow out :)

  • Is it weird that this gave me a boner?

  • Ser ut som min hund lol

  • have 2 Elkhounds in Norway, and they have compleatly oppisite personallities, However, they are super with children if you teach them to stop the puppy-biting at a young age, which is fairly simple :)

  • Hm. I live in Norway. I want a dog. Elkhound, I CHOOSE YOU!

  • are these dogs good with children?

  • @Skylark734 My aunt has 2, great with Children. They have a lot of *jumping* energy though!

  • i have a Norwegian elk hound and his name is Thor hahah so mythologically speaking my dog's this one's son hhhaaa

  • can you tell me if there a good breed to have? I'm planning to adopt a little abused one runt of the litter and I really want to know if I shouldn't do a specific thing around her I want her to feel safe and welcome. Like what do you feed odin, and is he scared of a specific thing? like being approached by strangers or other dogs?

  • awww he's sooo cute!

  • I grew up with Elkhounds and they would always act the same way in the snow. They love it! I want another one so bad but I have not been able to find a breeder anywhere near Atlanta. They are the best dogs I have ever been around.

  • in our local pub in Spiddal co.Galway ireland "jack" holds fort, he struts around town, holding up traffic and munching just about anything available , and then crashes out by the fire in the pub, great temperament and all round character , when i get a dog i want an elk hound.

  • wow, that looks just like my elkhound!

  • Mine acts the same way when it snows. It's adorable.

  • Odin is wonderful!!! What a beautiful, goofy boy! He makes me miss my little Elkie, Sofie so much! I may have to come back and watch again. Thank you for posting this and reminding me how much Sof loved the snow!

  • I know an Elkie named Riley who LOVES the snow..He pushes his face into it and then runs with his back legs, shoveling the snow into a pile, then laying in the pile.

One time I found him in a snowbank, covered in snow, just hangin' out, lookin' around and biting at the snowflakes as they fell..So awesome. This breed is one of the most gentle I've known, and they are loyal like no other. The shedding is the only drawback to this wonderful dog!! That and they're just so cute!!!

  • My dog is the same way in the snow... He loves to make doggie angels in it and shove his nose in it just like Odin... His name is Makoa...

  • my dog shadow we had to put him to sleep because he hurt his foot two of them accually. It took two sleep shots for him to go to sleep and while i wrote this i cried again! :,>(

  • I love elkhounds ! It is very good to have them in the bed to warm my feet :)

  • I hope he's not eating what it looks like; and rolling in it! I guess it's OK if you don't let him kiss you!!!! LOL!!!

  • @diefienbaker Yeah hey!? Jesus I would have no idea what to do if he ate some snow. You know.. snow is nasty.. like water.. and its cold.. God if he brought snow onto my rug I would kill myself.. SNOW!!!!

  • aw. it reminds me of my puppy Odin :( He was a GREAT showdog, won best of Specialty. Miss him so.

  • my bros hound must have been dropped on its head couple hundred times.

  • amazing dogs, my dog dexter loves planting his face in the snow, also their tails are so cool

  • you havent seen my bros elk hound, its literally retarded.

  • our girl has a tendency to run out the drive way after vehicles when she is loose...today it snowed 20+ inches in PA and we decided...we'll just let her loose because she isn't going anywhere! She took off out the front door, jumped off the porch and dissapeared,lol...then she re-appeared bounding across the snow,lol...she loves the snow!

  • best dog ever

  • my Elkhound pup is 16 weeks and on ear is still kind of floppy.

  • Nice dog....I miss my coco(R.I.P.). She was an Elkhound and I had her for 14 years. Most amazing animal I have ever come into contact with...I love her to death and miss her deeply.

  • Cute elkhound, my elkhound almost got named odin, but I decided Yohan fit him better.

  • Wow, he loves it! I can't wait for my elkie puppy to experience snow. :D Great video!

  • yay! this dog is so adorbale! i have an elkie and weve grown up together. these dogs are loving, protective, smart, and all around a good dog. my life woud not be the same if i didnt have my oreo! :D o yeah, and anybody whos says that these dogs are annoying and stupid are annoying and stupid themselves cause they obviously could never have had one in their life... amazing dogs! great post!

  • How does this dog do in a humid tropical but not too hot of a place ? Anyone know ? Is he like the German Shepard in that ? Now after looking these in the snow, their thick fur and thick skin it makes me think twice before eventually buying a pair and bring them with me to Brazil. Beautiful dogs !

  • my elk hound is now 3 years old we live in the centreall valley here in california where the summers get up too about 102 they require a lot of water but there great dogs.

  • thank you, my place is definitely more humid, but thanks for the heads up on that, I ll try and read more on it.

  • actually Elkhounds have been around for about 4000 years, German Shepherd's actually have Elkhounds in their breeding, hence the face/nose shape

  • very rare dog in ireland but so cute and talented ive 1 and wud be lost without him

  • what an beautiful and amazing dog wow I love I love this dog

  • i got a question... i happen to be from norway, but all the way south and i am planing on getting a new dog since my last one died of old age at 15.

Well the Question is how does these dogs like warm weather? because in south norway we get all the 4 seasons very strongly, so its VERY cold in the winter and VERY warm in the summer, so would a Norwegian Elkhound mind the heat?

  • I live in Norway and have 2 Elkhounds. Lived in Bergen for 2 yrs and they don't mind the heat at all, we moved here from Australia where it definately gets hotter than Norway..Now living in Tromso. Because of their "dual" insulation coat, they can handle just about anything..

  • Yeah, my Norwegian Elkhound loves the Minnesota weather much much more than I do!!

  • Hear, hear!

  • Whenever I want to show people what kind of dog I want I go to this video, awesome.

  • A gentle dog yet very caring and protective. one of the safest larger breeds you can own and fantastic around children. Roaming is their only real quirk and as long as you walk them and keep an eye on them then they are fine.

  • Do you hunt with him?

  • elkhound + snow = bliss

  • i want one of these dogs, would it be hard on them if they lived in california?

  • Yeah, they are really a cold weather dog. My Elkhound hates the summer, but when it snows, she absolutely loves it

  • ever had one? oh nm....you couldn't have.

  • CAT PERSON

  • you are a fricken retard how would you know you havent had one get a life you jerk

  • they are popular in so. ca. need ac, tho.

  • Norwegian elkhound = one of the oldest breed in the world.

  • Its a norwegian elkhound, i love your movie :P

  • what a nice hound and name

  • the Swedish Elkhound has a wolf parable!

  • Norwegian Elkhound is similar the Swedish Elkhound. It is only a little smaller and have more fur.

  • Norwegian Elkhound/Norsk Elghund are great :) One of the oldest dog breeds that exist today, several thousand years old.

Was used both for herding, guarding and hunting(like most of the Norwegian dogbreeds)

  • lol! That was funny! U know, i'm planning to get a dog like that when I get older!

  • Odin is precious! He LOVES the snow!

  • norwegian elkhounds are the largest relative of the pomeranian

  • Nydelig hund

  • do you live in utah?

  • Wow...I buddy had a Nor. Elkhound named Odin too. He passed in 05. Great dogs!

  • i have two Norwegian Elkhounds Thur and Gere they are great dogs good for hunting in cold weather

  • When ever I need my Norwegian Elkhound fix I just go to Sue house and get my fix with her 3 girls. She is the Northern Calif person on the rescue page for these dogs. When ever my kids move and get a house we are going to get one.

  • Our Odin was a little chubbier than yours. I miss my dogs. :(

  • Oh wow! I've had two Elkhounds and believe it or not one of them we named Odin as well. Thats funny. Our other we named Rebel. They're both in doggy heaven now though :(. I love these dogs SO much thanks for posting. :D

  • Aww! He is so adorable! Great job! lol

  • Aww! He is so adorable! Great job! lol

  • Beautiful dog. We used to have an Elkhound mix named Kingston "king". He managed to live 'till he was about 18!!! That's a long time for a big dog. We miss him a lot...they are a beautiful breed.

  • Most beautiful dog ever! I grew up next to an Elkie named Tass and they remain my most favorite dog. Good with kids, strangers and yet completely dependable to protect you. they are just so sensitive and gentle with a warrior's drive. YOUR DOG IS THE BEST!!

  • When we have snow in Atlanta, my elgie goes down the deck steps, acccomplishes her mission, and comes back to the door in less time than it takes close and latch the door. She does not like cold weather or rain. When the power went out for a week during an ice storm some years back, she crawled into a 15 degree down sleeping bag with my mother.

  • what's he eating under the snow? My Elkies used to hunt voles in my backyard; they'd follow the tracks by scent above the snow and then leap up in the air when they could hear the vole and pounce down through the snow. Quite amusing unless you were the poor vole!

  • He's so lovely, I want one! Going to get a Norwegian elkhound when I'm older, and have enough land to exercise it. Stupid London! I want the countryside!

  • looks just like my chico...Chico loved to play in the snow. he would rub his face in the snow just like that! he was such a sweety. RIP Chico...

  • I have an elkhound/red wolf mix. The man who raised these boys had been perfecting his breed for about 20 years so at least 12-14 generations of them were born and never knew they were wolves. Handled by 8 and 10 year old girls from birth so Chief loves children and thinks they all belong to him. Sixteen months old and is strawberry blonde w/wolf face and yellow green eyes. Smart, sweet, well behaved and sheds like a dandelion. Horrible shedding. I make him howl all the time.

  • I have a Norwegian Elkhound named Ayla, hence my default picture. She is so cute as well as your dog. With my dog if you go like "arwararwar" over and over againt o her she'll start doing it back. It's so cute.

  • i have a norwegian elkhound, her name is skye. she is a chubba chubba but we still love her. haha. she does the same exact thing in the snow. it's adorable. (:

  • so cute . my dad had 1 but the vet put him to sleep because he had parvo disease . :'-(

  • one of my friends lost a puppy to parvo. so sorry!

  • one of my friends lost a puppy to parvo. so sorry!

  • Hehe, my dog does exactly the same thing every day on any surface, even though I believe he finds snow to be a little more amusing!

  • i heard they are illegal in the states .... i hope i heard wrong cause they look like awesome dogs ... maybe california wont alow them like everything else ... *shruggs*

  • That is completely inaccurate. The norwegian elkhound is an akc recognized breed (Odin is a champion) and is legal in all 50 states. I am a member of, and friends with the president of, the Norwegian Elkhound Association of Northern California. Currently, none of the AKC recognized breeds are illegal in California. I don't think any are illegal in any of the 50 states, but I could be mistaken? There was some push in CA to make the pitbull illegal, but it never gained much traction.

  • I don't see why they would be illegal...

  • nope. plenty of norwegian elkhounds. they're all over CA. and all the states. why would they be illegal? better check your facts. my first elkhounds were in CA.

  • @braindeadincali Most gentle and loyal breed ever. i don't think they are on record ANYWHERE having EVER hurt anyone. Viking stock, just the best.

  • hahaha my elkhound is watching this vid intently.

  • Neat. Good to know pets use youtube as well :)

  • Very good bread miine loves the snow, and very very protective actually caught robber one time and we caught the robber because of him
