I highly doubt that under water volcanoes are what's melting the perma-frost. Perma-frost which is releasing methane into the atmosphere, which will heat things up even more. CO2 is a greenhouse gas and we are producing it on mass. Look it up and stop being ignorant.

Given that temperatures in the antarctic rarely get above freezing, I think we can expect melting to be only a very minor factor in land ice-loss, which leaves evaporation (or 'sublimation' to be precise) and wind-erosion as the main factors. On the other side of the equation, precipitation will be the main factor determining ice-gain and that will be dependent primarily on weather-patterns and only indirectly (i.e. to a very small extent) on the global mean temperature.
@rietveen26 What makes you certain that antarctic land ice is melting? It depends on the time period over which we are measuring it. There may be short-term decreases that are replaced by greater increases in the longer term, and vice versa. We are dealing with numerous intermixed cyclic variations here, whose amplitudes and periods are almost entirely unknown. In the end it all seems to me to come down to weather-patterns that determine ice-gains and losses on the antarctic land-mass.

I highly doubt that under water volcanoes are what's melting the perma-frost. Perma-frost which is releasing methane into the atmosphere, which will heat things up even more. CO2 is a greenhouse gas and we are producing it on mass. Look it up and stop being ignorant.

Previous to this there were long times where sun activity aligned well with World average temps...thereby strongly implicating CO2 with much of the temperature rises in the last decades.

Let's see now, there is the volcanic mid-atlantic ridge, the Pacific Ring of Fire, Cascadia Subduction zone, etc. Calculate the total heat output of these electric furnace vents, and compare it to the total vehicular emission/yr. You will find that you could not generate enough heat to power a small volcano. We need much atmosphere to maintain the earths' plasma sheath, etc. Atmosphere comes via. combustion or similar process. Maybe I'm wrong, but calculations will confirm this. Where are they?

Given that temperatures in the antarctic rarely get above freezing, I think we can expect melting to be only a very minor factor in land ice-loss, which leaves evaporation (or 'sublimation' to be precise) and wind-erosion as the main factors. On the other side of the equation, precipitation will be the main factor determining ice-gain and that will be dependent primarily on weather-patterns and only indirectly (i.e. to a very small extent) on the global mean temperature.

@rietveen26 What makes you certain that antarctic land ice is melting? It depends on the time period over which we are measuring it. There may be short-term decreases that are replaced by greater increases in the longer term, and vice versa. We are dealing with numerous intermixed cyclic variations here, whose amplitudes and periods are almost entirely unknown. In the end it all seems to me to come down to weather-patterns that determine ice-gains and losses on the antarctic land-mass.

If you ever watched those time-lapse videos of the arctic and antarctic regions here on YouTube, you will see that A) their masses change shape and size constantly throughout the year, B) There has been no change in their size over the last 30 years (the time lapse videos span a 30 year period) and C) ice ALWAYS breaks off at the edge of the arctic and antarctic regions because its mass accumulates at the centre, pushing the edges outward and causing them to break up. ITS NATURAL!!!!!

The RATE at which the ice is melting is cause for alarm, higher rates logically suggest that more ice will melt in the year while a similar amount from the previous year would freeze back up, this means more has melted than frozen in the yearly cycle.

The ice shelve's were formed during the last ice age , they naturally melt and freeze again and since the poles are the coldest part's of the globe they last here, if they all melted and joined the volume's of the world's ocean's , it would simply be part of a cycle that started long before we come along and it will be continuing for billion's of year's .The impact of humanity on the planet is misunderstood and misdirected , we are merely pissing in an ocean . That guy Schneider from Stanford is a moron. Sea levels rise by 10-20 feet due to Greenland and Antarctica ice melt? Just based on surface areas that's ludicrous. The surface area of the oceans is 25 times the surface area of the the two combined. If those two continents were ENTIRELYcovered with ice to a depth of 500 feet, and it ALL melted, then yes, sea levels would rise by 20 feet.

They only talk about small areas of Antartica because they know that overall Antartica is not losing ice mass. Sea ice levels are well above average. Antartic snowmelt set a record low in 2009. Gps measurements show Antartica is gaining land ice (Wendt et al 2009). Alarmists should focus on the Artic and hope everyone forgets Antartica.

I used to play hockey every day after school at the outdoor rinks when I was little. I distinctly rememebr periods consistent temperatures below -20 for months on end. Now, the rink is hardly open for more than a few days per season, and it never gets that cold anymore...not even close.

The earths climate has never stayed the same ever. With the orbital cycle, the wobble of the earth, solar flares, sun spots, etc. It's impossible to have a consistant temperature range. The earth goes through natural warming cycles just like this about every 100,000 yrs. sometimes more, sometimes less.

the scientists are trying to scare us with global warming so they can get more money for research. but there is a good side to all this: there's a lot of research into sustainability which will help us a lot in the future when oil is gone. if by that time the world doesn't change from oil to another source of energy, then we'll all be fucked...and as far as global warming, we can use all that water to terraform deserts and everything should become balanced again, hopefully :)
