  • @AJTwister97 The lightning bolt struck him in the foot, and they might've had to amputate his toe, or something else, like skin grafts.

  • In the liner notes on one of the Tornado Project videos, (this is on Vol. II) it says about the effects he had from the lightning strike, he lost a toe about three days later, and had to amputate. I always kind of chuckle when I hear him say, "Sh**, I got struck." You can't really hear Sh**, because it was edited. An iflow jet blew the windows out on the house, being that probably the winds from the tornado did that.

    ~Craig

  • @vcp430 how do you lose a toe from getting struck by lightning? was it where it exited his body?

  • Holy shit, that satellite tornado coming out of the meso at the very beginning was GIGANTIC! This storm meant fucking business...

  • @DisturbedFrankeh that wasn't a satellite, that was the rope stage of another tornado that occured prior to the tape filming

  • @AJTwister97 Ah, I see... I kept thinking the roped out tornado looked like a satellite because of how close it was to coming out of the F4's wall cloud... my mistake.

  • Excellent video, although I would say the guy is more stupid than brave. He definitely did not get "struck" by lighting although it was very close. He would not be standing and filming had he actually recieved an electrical shock. He may very well had to change his underwear though. I'll live in a trailer when they start putting basements in them.

  • nice vid dude that guy brave too plz check out my page got some pretty good vids not really compared to this but pretty good

  • WOW! Amazing, That Guy Is Brave!! Well Done For Stikin It Out Till The End!

  • great video and thank you very much for he description i was curious about this video and it answered all of my questions :)

  • WOW. They sure are loud!

  • best tornado movie iv seen so far

  • This guy, he didn't even flinch when he saw the tornado. : D

  • tornadoes are fury up close? hahahahahahahahaahahahahahah

  • I don't know more amazing proof of power ...... I feel bad for those, who were in that house (IF someone was in there ) ...... but it's simply amazing and exciting show of nature !!! :PPP I had no breath while watching this

  • I wish this was a kill streak in COD. Fuckin campers would learn not to camp ever again!.

  • Balls of steel. And, to capitalize on this matter, he was probably in a trailer too, which is even more bad ass. Tornado hit a trailer park in my city and a lot of people died.

  • DID GARY KAYs sURvive? it look like he didnt

  • @SW10ADSS He was knocked out for a while, but survived. Some of this footage was featured in a 1992 two-taped documentary called Twisters: Nature's Fury.

  • This is definately my favorite video ever!! This guy is amazing!! He should've been dead many times over just in this couple of minutes, yet he films it like this is an everyday thing LOL!! I tip my hat to him and his huge set of balls!!

  • This is definetly the most raw, intense tornado video I've ever seen on youtube. For sure more exciting than anything I've seen on tv. I feel like I'm standing there with the guy experiencing the whole thing. This guy is crazy for staying there videotaping this, but I'm glad he did cause this is awesome to watch!

  • BEST. TORNADO. VIDEO. ON. YOUTUBE. PERIOD.

  • This video has appeared in my dreams at least twice in some form. It's so awesome.

  • Wow that guy refused to abandon ship lol. Awesome stuff.

  • BADASSSS

  • Gary Kays for president.

  • I hope Mr. Gary Kays wasn't in a mobile home too, His neighbor got fucked up.

  • if u see that guy who filmed this tell him he is a badass motherfucker :)

  • thats one brave texan

  • man.....this looks like a nightmare that i had about a tornado...

  • I know no one will ever believe this but me a my friend todd smoked a bowl inside a very wide tornado. It was only at most an F2 but it was cool still.

  • he not on drugs hes in fight or flight mode, hes full on a adrenaline rush which cancels out fear, he cant run, its not like running to another trailer will saved him so he just continues to film.

  • @js35701 i would have been in my basement or storm cellar by 0:01

  • this tornado was shot in the town i lived in gary kays is amazing he gots some amazing photage with his cam

  • I've seen a highly edited version of this clip in the past. I'm glad you have this longer version. After watching this video you can truly admire Mr. Kays perseverance throughout all this despite the devastation that is occurring around him (if it was me, I'd be crapping my pants). I would definitely rank this as one of the top tornado video clips of all time - right up there with the famous Andover, KS underpass clip. Thanks for posting this!

  • From 1:28 to 1:33, you can see a small tornado circling around the parent tornado.

  • @TornadoSponge12390 It's a multiple vortex tornado. That funnel is part of the tornado. I filmed a Multiple vortex in Wakita Oklahoma and saw this same occurance several times. I had to bolt though, trees were flying in the air and I wasn't going to wait for it to get on top of me. It was coming right at me. I filmed it, but had to cut the camera off once it got to close for comfort. I saw parts of a barn flying over to my left, that is when I said "OK, I'M GONE".

  • woah, that is horrifying

  • It would seem that the tornado is the last line of destruction in the supercell.

  • I have this on an old video tape. If you listen close you can hear him get struck by lightening...he says, "Sh*$! I got struck!!" The guy is either immortal or totally amped on meth or somethin...

  • OMG RUUUNNN

  • This is guy is not brave! either he is on drugs or just a darn stupid fool!!!!!!!!!

  • Gary Keys, you are nucking futz! Get in the basement, dude!

  • This video is awesome!!! Dude has monster balls.

  • Damn, not only does he basically get hit by a tornado, but he nearly gets struck by lightning as well! That storm was totally gunning for him!

  • *º-º big video elegant super*

  • WOW!! Maybe one of the best Tornado videos out there!

  • Remeber to click your heels together 3 times to get home...

  • Remember* sorry for the typo

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Maybe I better just stay in phoenix" I love chasing tornadoes and filming them, but when they come onto my turf (my land and my house) then we have a big problem"

  • Too bad in holland there are no tornadoes :(, because i would chase them also if i would see them ;d

  • Wow so that's what a tornado sounds like. :)

  • Best Tornado video....steady hands, and no fear. This guys a hero.

  • I remember when this happened I lived in a nearby town. Fairly common occurence in those parts.

  • Wow that was extremely dangerous as he could've been hit by flying debris... amazing video. It was totally worth it!!!

  • @UltimateDarkloid Towards the end of the clip when the shot goes dark he actually was hit by debris from his own house and was knocked unconscious. Many of the tornado documentaries I owned as a kid showed this clip and that's what the narrations said.

  • If one day I see a monster like that in front of my house, I'll not film it, I'll hide in my basement and cry like a baby...

  • Amazing! To keep on filming afer being struck, very brave man!

  • you do not you afraid? :O

  • fuck

  • IM SCARED!!!

  • If I was going to do that, id make sure I was strapped to a pole that isnt going anywhere

  • this guy has got guts that all i got to say.

  • Wow, looked like hell on earth. That guy is either really brave or really dumb.

  • This guy's balls are bigger than the state he lives in!

  • @BetaWolf47 The guy was probably in the military. Most likely the Marines!.

  • @BetaWolf47 HAHAHAHAHAHA thats an awesome thing to say.

  • @BetaWolf47 i know right

  • i remember that day! scary!!!! glad i'm outta there! lol

  • wow, it's amazing how you can hear how strong the winds are when the tornado gets closer. I'm suprised only the windows broke in that house the guy was in.

  • that close lighting strike was God telling him to get his butt to shelter !!

  • or He was just letting him know that he was going to go through one hella of a ride! man that guy has balls.

  • ya lol!

  • thats scary ; i would run awaway !!!! :P

  • wow got struck by lightning and continued video taping at least yo cameras charged up! lol cool tornado

  • That was the best tornado video i have ever seen...Well done...ur brave!

  • Comment removed

  • oh gosh you would had been lucky if this tornado could have come closer to your home but please be careful when you are filming this tornado close enough that could had been dangerous.

  • Comment removed

  • He could have gone outside to get a better angle but then the video would have never surfaced as the guy's camera would have been

  • I wish i could be out there ;) :P

  • wow 0_0

  • GOD DAM, that shit was coming closer to his house. the wind is amazing fucking nice vid

  • There is distinct difference between being brave and being stupid. Yes this was great footage, but he could have been severely injured and most likely killed. If his mobile home sustained the same damage as the one he filmed to the left the outcome could have been much different. Although I appreciate this video, think it sends a wrong message to people. Always take shelter and never take shelter in a mobile home.

  • bravo cameraman... outstanding footage

  • gary kays is truely brave for recording this.

  • What in God's name prompted you to come in this forum to make such a silly assed comment. One of the reasons why this video is so good is due to the fact that the twister was up close. The viewers get the chance to see what a storm such as this might look like just blocks away or a few feet away. The man who took this video should have gotten payed for this work. Now if you can not act civil, go throw water balloons off a building and go WHOAH DUDE. THAT WAS LIKE SEW TOTALLY AWESOME!

  • He could have gone outside perhaps and gotten that outstanding video shot of this approaching storm. I could see that video being show all over the TV and all over Youtube, that is after they found the Dude's camera and found the Dude's body 3 blocks down the street. That is about as asinine a commentary as I have heard on youtube. Trust me, there is no shortage of imbecilic nimrods posting all the hell over Youtube making the same kind of brilliant commentary as you just made.::major eye roll::

  • what the fuck is your problem... i dont see you standin outside recordin a video of a violent tornado, your the pussy! you cunt!

  • i'd never have the balls to record THAT!! awesome!!

  • this is FUCKING AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow. I want to be like this man when I see my first tornado. His calm demeanor gives the video a refreshing purity.

  • OMG ... AWESOME ...

  • Did you people miss something???? 2:21 The wicked Witch of the west flew by

  • that must have been terrifying, watching it on film was so I can't imagine being there.

  • I once watched a small funnel pass over my apartment out the back window and when it got close enough that I could look up inside of it the window began to shudder. Just as I jumped back it busted and flew out into the parking lot. That funnel touched down briefly outside of town and snapped two telephone poles like match sticks and then went back up into the clouds. I'm here to tell you even a weak tornado could kill you and ground zero with no shelter in a strong tornado is certain death.

  • You are the bravest man on the planet !!!!!!!!!!

  • first video i seen where a tornado has thunder near..

  • About living in Fritch or a tornado?

  • holy shit, the houses across the street was gone after..

  • Didn't Ron White the comedian lived in Fritch, TX? I wonder if he has even lived thru a tornado....

  • Thing is, look how long the tornado lasted. It wasn't no 10 seconds or less one.

  • Wow!!!!

  • Holly Crap!!!!!

  • no nervs

  • This is awesome!!

  • I lived in fritch at the time of this storm. I was 7 years old but remember it quite well, and it was pretty traumatic! Great footage though!

  • the best tornado experience on video, everything but scraping the mud out of your mouth and eyes and ears. the wind shrieks ever louder and the darkness grows and everything starts coming apart.

amazing how many people survive this.

  • dude this is crazy he actually got struck

  • I cannot wait until I can videotape severe weather footage in Western PA! The season is now upon us!!!!

  • fucking insane!!!

  • Do you think this was F4 status when it was filmed?

  • i just want 2 c a tornado but i live in geogia so we dont get much bisides the atlanta tornado

  • Come down to central GA, we get them all the time. It's not something you would want to get caught in I must say.

  • lol i live in mcdonough GA

  • AMAZING :O

  • that little sweety of a tree is just a stayin put.....thats my hunny bunny tree rite there.,..especially from about 2:06 - 2:

    10 unreal

  • I finally managed to get replacement copies of my Tornado Video Classics DVDs. First thing I did was fix them. They were rather badly constructed. All of the audio on all three DVDs was left-channel only (right channel was silent). Video was divided into titles which caused pauses during playback. All of that was fixed. If they were of better quality, I'd correct the levels (like ColonelAngus75 did with this clip), remove noise, and basically completely remake them.

  • That sucks that they can't do a better job with the DVDs. Do you still think it would be better to order the VHS versions and transfer them?

  • Tough call but probably not. I judge that the DVDs were mastered from something above VHS, though it was certainly a one-pass encode. Whatever software Tom Grazulis used to create the discs was a seriously barebones app. At a guess, he gave it rough chapter locations, but it proceeded to encode the video into discrete VOB chunks based on those markers. This had the irreparable bonus of causing tiny audio dropouts at those moments - something the software likely did to avoid audible clicks.

  • Though I might add that a good VHS transfer would have the potential of looking better in some instances, by virtue of the fact that a single-layer, single-pass encode of an unavoidably grainy 60i master is going exhibit heavy digital artifacting during moments of even moderate activity (as these DVDs do). Plus the VHS tapes do not exhibit the aforementioned audio dropouts (and, for all that I can recall, perhaps some of the VHS audio was in stereo, which is not possible with these DVDs).

  • Every time I see this it amazes me. It looks as if this man gets hit by the tornado coming in from his left angle side. He has the video cam pointed at the main part of this tornado storm, but if you watch carefully, most of the severe damage to his neighborhood is going on to his left. The tornado is coming into his neighborhood from his left side. You also see multiple vortex tornadoes swirling about under the main cloud. This video is fantastic.

  • Wow, this amazes me each time.

  • you have bigger nuts than i will ever bro nice video

  • I've seen this many times, and yet it still remains one of the most exciting torando vidoes ever I.M.O.

    no less than AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • OK this guy was very gutsy in doing what he did , and I give em total props for doing this video. I don't think any of us on here could have been any braver especially the guy being jolted by a near by lightning bolt. People like this that risk it all, deserve respect and gives us a further peek into the destruction and power of these tornadoes. A EF4 is powerful and clearly as the trailer park is wiped off the face of the earth, it shows they provide NO Protection. From the burbs of Metro DTW.

  • jusus christ, it looks like a developing twister about 2 miles and then a multicyclonic twister anout 4 miles away scary

  • I would have shit myself at 2:00

  • scary huh

  • me too!

  • That little tree is like: Rock on!!! Bring it on! Wooo!

  • the whole version of this movie is even scarier. i dam near shit myself. ya the guy who filmed this should the "BIGGEST BALLS OF THE YEAR" award for real.

  • So scary wind sound.

  • That was the closest video of a tornado yet!

  • Balls. Of. Steel.

    Wow.

You're an idiot, but a brave idiot who has my respect.

  • He got struck by lightning?

  • It wasn't a direct strike, it struck very close by and he received a big jolt from it.

  • AWESOME! Best I've seen also and I've seen a lot of videos. Nice nadz riding that out with the camera in hand

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!

that is insanity..that guy must have just frozen to the spot in complete fear and shock at seeing this come right towards you, and get larger. I Guess by the end of the video the tornado passed..?

if i didnt die from the tornado, id have a heart attack at the end.. hope the guy was fine!

  • This is the best I've seen. I can't believe how undaunted the filmer is! I'd be shittin my pants! Incredible.

  • What a great video. This really captures the terrifying aspect of a tornado that is headed your way...

  • God u must been has big Gut can't believe he filming from there :O

    it's so dangerous...

to me i better ran my A>> off.

  • That footage was amazing. I saw this same video on the G4 show "People behaving badly." The man filming this had chosen to stay inside his house while his wife and kids (the smart ones, obviously) hid inside a storm shelter. While it was showing the video, it had an interview of him. When the tornado hit his neighbor's house, he commented, "I was thinking right then 'this is about the dumbest thing I've ever done.'"

Brave guy, and man was he lucky. I'd be cowering in the corner of the shelter!

  • UUUh, yeah.

  • Wow! Great video! One of the best tornado videos I've ever seen. How did you get a hold of it?

  • It's on a videotape I own called "Tornado Video Classics II"

  • Trop tendue!!!

  • My God! I have seen some amazing tornado videos on Youtube before, but this is the first that made me feel almost like I was in one (I went through the 1986 Hesston tornado and the edge of the 1979 Wichita Falls storm)

I actually started sweating and shaking. Gary, you have serious cojones!

  • You were in the Hesston tornado? What was it like? I live in Junction City, Kansas and am very fascinated in tornados. Did you hear about the Greensburg and Chapman tornados?

  • omg that guy has guts but man he could have been killed!

  • DOUBLE YOU OH DOUBLE YOU......

  • do you think you could suffocate if you were outside (I know,it's impossible not to be blown away but just imagine it) and there were such strong winds like you can hear here?

  • crazy, scary and funny all at the same time!
