  • HAAAA!!!! Of course I was right.

  • Ha ha! I'm not too "creepy." ;)

  • this dude creeps me out. BTW your body does need carbs but it will make some do just take BCAA and hit the gym hard.

  • How much protein is too much? :o

  • @renegadekitten1 Fat should be at least 2-3 times the amount of protein you are consuming. It's high-fat first, moderate protein, low-carb. The precise amount will depend.

  • Gluconeogenesis is simply the reason why many hunter-gatherer cultures, which don't have access to grain based carbohydrates, could survive. They got their glucose, which they need to fuel their body, from this process of converting animal protein, which they hunted, to glucose. Even before discovering the biochemical process of gluconeogenesis, people should have been skeptical of the idea that we need dietary carbs to stay alive, because obviously hunter gather society's didn't require them.

  • How much fat should we aim for? I'm eating 80% fat, 15% protein, 5% carbohydrate but I'm not losing after 3 months and my appetite is still pretty good. Plus my glucose is elevated every morning.. what is going on? Is gluconeogenesis the culprit?

  • @cathytress Hmmmm, email me what you're eating and I'll see if I can help. livinlowcarbman at charter dote net.

  • this may be a random question lol but I am a pretty fit person and lately i have been just feeling hungry like crazy

  • Sounds like you need to be getting more FAT into your diet. Hunger can satiated with ample amounts of fat and a moderate amount of protein in the absence of carbohydrate. Carbs stimulate insulin which is what makes you hungry. Turn off the insulin visa vi eating more fat, moderate protein and less carbs and your hunger will dissipate. GREAT QUESTION!

  • How does the body react when it thinks the carb stores are super low because it doesn't have any carbs from dietary sources and how does a person perform in sports or how do they feel when they exercise when they have low carb diet? Is running ok ? or does it feel like hell. Do you run? Do you lift weights or do any exercise other than walking to increase your cardiovascular health.

  • The body gets all the glucose it needs from the protein/liver process I talked about in this video. Sure, if you're running a marathon or something you might need a little dietary carbohydrate before you exercise. But the recommendation to eat gobs of pasta and rice to "carb up" is antiquated and nobody does that anymore. Eat a few strawberries with your high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb meal beforehand and enjoy a fantastic workout. I don't run, but I play competitive volleyball.

  • Thanks Jimmy, I will look for mayo without sugar. I like bacon too I use low sodium sugarfree bacon that has 0g carbs looking for nitrite free?. Thank you I appreciate your help. Did you start doing excercise when you first started at your heaviest? I get really exhuasted fast from just walking sometimes. really out of shape...I don't feel I have enough energy when I excercise or walk alot. What did you do to start? should I eat any carbs or fat before I work out? will that help? SLIMQUEST :)

  • Sounds like you need a copy of my first book, buddy, because all the answers your questions are in there. :D

I didn't exercise for a full month when I started low-carb because I just couldn't. And even when I did start, it was just 15 minutes on the treadmill at a time before I was out of breath. You work your way up to a level over time and it's not as bad as you think. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

Oh, don't eat carbs, but rather a healthy high-fat, moderate-protein meal prior to your workout.

  • Hello Jimmy, thank you for your help....

quick ? do you discourage eating mayo... I just found out it has sugar in it and I have been having 5 tbs per day since I started YIKS... are there sugar free versions out there? what other fats can I use besides butter, EVOO, OO, protien fats... also do you discourage bacon or other cured meat due to sugar, sodium nitrates content? Please let me know your thoughts... thanks SlimQuest

  • Not all mayo has sugar in it. I use a brand called Duke's here in the South and it contains just 1g carb. LOVE IT! As for fats, coconut oil, avocado oil, lard, heavy cream, nuts, macadamia nut oil, and more can be used. I personally love bacon and you can find versions that are lower in sugar and nitrate-free.

  • Hello Jimmy, thank you... was wondering does the body use the Dietary fats J eat first to burn for energy or is it our body fat that is broken down via Lipolisis that gives us the ability to burn fat for fuel? is it a combination of Gluconeogenisis, Lipolisis and Ketones that gives us the fuel? Energy. Please clear this up for me if you could,,, thanks

  • Actually, it's a combination that happens simultaneously when you are using fat for fuel. Unlike carbs which HAVE to be used up before fat-burning can commence, both dietary and stored fat are used for energy through lipolysis as you noted. Gluconeogenesis also provides energy from the protein you consume, but your primary fuel comes from fat when you become keto-adapted. Hope this helps!

  • Hi.

I just found your vids today. 3 months ago I was obese and after researching everyday (all day) I come to the conclusion it was carbs that were hindering my fatloss. I'd never heard of the atkins diet and still haven't read it but it seems I've been on it for quite some time. However I have been getting into bodybuilding and EVERYBODY says I need carbs to push protein to my muscles... I'm really happy with my results so far but they may have a point when it comes to bodybuilding.Any advise?

  • THANKS for your comment and WELCOME to finding the truth about how your body works. It's a freedom I wish more people could be able to experience.

The idea that you need carbs to "push protein" into your muscles is not backed by science. Yes, you should create enough glucose in the body to use the amino acids when you are working out, but most people who lift get more than adequate glucose from gluconeogenesis.

Read these books: THE TNT DIET by Dr. Volek and BODY BY SCIENCE by Dr. McGuff.

  • What do you think of adding just the right amount of carbohydrates that will spare the protein from being used as fuel? I guess this may be hard in practice put i think doctor Jan Kwasniewski proposes something like this when he wsuggests eating 60g carb/day?

  • I think it can vary from person to person, John. If I ate 60g carbs daily, then I would gain weight. From all the people I've interviewed about this subject on my podcast show, most would say keep your carbs at a ketogenic level which would be less than 50g. The protein is used for fuel as long as you keep it moderate. It's the dietary fat and stored body fat that is used for fuel in the absence of carbohydrate.

  • this video is true. I read one Journal of Nutrition article that said eating a six ounce steak can cause the release of more insulin than a eating a potato! Yet people following the Stillman version of low carb, which is very high protein and very low fat, lose weight well. I don't think its the insulin itself that promotes weight gain, but the presence of lots of dietary carbs along with high levels of insulin that causes fat storage.

  • I like this videos, what are u guys' credentials?

  • We're just a couple of laypeople who have educated ourselves about healthy living. I lost 180 pounds on the Atkins diet in 2004 and now share about the latest low-carb research and health news at my "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" blog. THANKS for sharing your comment!

  • Awesome thanks for your fast response. However, i am a molecular toxicology and nutritional science student (can't say which school because they do not endorse me). I have learned through my studies that ON average these kind of diets won't work. But it is my personal opinion that they are worth a shot. Great work on losing 180! Big kuddos!

  • I hear ya! But low-carb diets are optimum for health and all the data is pointing in that direction. Read GOOD CALORIES BAD CALORIES by Gary Taubes and listen to my interviews with the experts at my podcast "The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore" on iTunes or you can Google the show name for the official web site. Also, check out NutritionAndMetabolism dote come for TONS of research validating this way of eating. GOOD LUCK in your studies.

  • I've addressed this whole "balanced" diet thing before at my blog. While it certainly sounds good to say it, how much sugar do you need to consume on a "balanced" diet? What about the proper balance of foods like chocolate cake, French fries, potato chips, pretzels, Coca-Cola, or even a deep-fried Snicker bar? Are these all a part of a "balanced" diet, too? I do like Tom Venuto's book, although it's not my favorite diet book. Have you read GOOD CALORIES, BAD CALORIES by Gary Taubes yet?

  • My definition of a balanced diet is 50-30-20 or even 40-40-20. Like everything theres good and bad carbs so when i say 50% or 40% carbs i'm talking about complex carbs in the morning and fibrous carbs at night.

  • I hear ya. But some of us (myself included) are especially sensitive to consuming that many carbs in a day because they will impact our insulin levels. You are blessed if you don't have this carbohydrate sensitivity syndrome, but a lot of people do. It's why we've struggled with managing our weight for most of our lives prior to finding low-carb.

  • yeah well thats it everyone is different and we have our own individul metabolisms to think about. Not arguing low carbs aren't effective i'm just worried about longer term usage. I personally was on the anabolic diet and after 6 months started suffering adrenal fatigue because of the excess production of cortisol and the starin it put on my adrenals.

  • What's REALLY scary is long-term low-fat diets. There haven't been any well-controlled research studies legitimizing the alleged benefits of low-fat dieting over the long-term. In fact, all the evidence points to the opposite. I'd be happy to share this data with you if you e-mail me at livinlowcarbman at charter dote net.

  • Yeah no denying very low fat diets aren't healthy either thats why i avoid extremes. a 50 -30-20 or 40-40-20 diet with 20% being fat is more than enough IMO. 40% carbs 40% protiein and 20% seems to be the best balanced diet. On a 2000 calorie a day diet thats 400 calories from fat with equates to 44 grams. I am in no way advocating high carb low fat diets. When i hit my first weight loss plateu i actually added more flaxseed oil to my diuet and shot straight through it.

  • Healthier option is a balanced diet though. Have you ever read tom venuto's burn the fat feed the muslce??? Thats the worlds best diet book IMO

  • Low carbs are dangerous. Gluconeogenesis is dangerous aswell heres why.

Do you know which hormone is responsible for stimulating gluconeogenesis??? Cortisol.

Cortisol is one of the body's stress hormones. A little bit of cortisol isn't bad but if your body is constantly secreting cortisol to aid gluconeogensis aswell as being secreted to the stresses of everyday life then obviosuly theres going to be too much in your system.

Too much cortisol can cause a host of problems

  • Gluconeogenesis is no more "dangerous" than breathing. While I agree cortisol is very bad for your health, GNG is not the cause of an increased secretion of it. THANKS for commenting!

  • no probs. I worded my previous post wrong. Gluconeogenesis isn't dangerous and is actually the bodies survival response when we are starving. I was just saying when dietary carbs are low the body releases cortisol to help aid in the production of glucose. This on top of the stressors of life can raise cortisol higher than it needs to be. Elevated coritsol levels obviously cause a lot of problems. But hey if people get the best results on low carbs diet then by all means stick with it.

  • The good thing is you don't have to be in "starvation mode" if your body is experiencing gluconeogenesis. Consuming good healthy fats while reducing the total carbohydrate intake regulates blood glucose levels which keeps insulin and even cortisol in check. THANKS for the clarification!

  • Yeah i wasn't saying you need to be in starvation for gluconeogenesis to happen. Just saying gluconeogenesis was helpful in the case that your body was in starvation mode. Glucose is the brains preferred fuel source and if it don't get it, it will make it. Hence why gluconeogenesis happens. When the bodies blood sugar is low it will release cortisol to aid in making glucogen available for the brain. Although the brain does function on acetones it isn't highly effiecnt.

  • If you want to have a wonderful low carb desert, here is a quick favourite. Take a tablespoon or two of fluid heavy whipping cream and beat it in a cup of bowl with a half packet of splenda until it becomes the consistency that you like for topping and place it on sugar free jello (preferably sweetened with sucralose). Yummy!

Take care all of you Low Carbers:)

  • Wow,

and I thought I knew pretty much everything there is to know regarding the bodies metabolic system, nutrition and the way in which the two inter-connect... I just learned something new and fabulous. Thank you. I learned about Gluconeogenesis in college while earning my degree in Nutrition and sports medicine, but I didn't think about the fact that you could stall weight loss. It makes perfect sense and is absolutely a true fact.

    Thanks again Jimmy

    Love The Guitar Man

  • THANKS! It's something more people should know about so they can better understand how the food they eat impacts not just their weight but their health. We appreciate you watching!

  • Nice video, great information.

  • Excellent stuff, Moore-fam. This is key to why the Atkins Revolution "fat-fast" works!

  • That's right! :) And why you NEVER need to really eat all that carby crap after all. THANKS SHG!

  • jimmy i have a question im not suggesting everyone do what i do to break my stalls but ive noticed when my body seems to be stalling in my weight loss ill eat something like a few pieces of chocolate or a scoop of ice cream just ocnce a month and it seems like it breaks my plateu is this common

  • Hey Angela! I wouldn't necessarily recommend your strategy, but I'm glad it worked for you. The insulin/blood sugar response from doing such a strategy might be a little much for some people. But I do recommend a splurge meal one time every 6-8 weeks if you feel cravings and/or plateaus which I've blogged about and wrote in my book. THANKS for sharing! :)

  • You Aiken girl you! :D Do I really have a twang? :P

  • 100% True!!! I have learned when the scales stop moving and look back at my food journal; that i will stall and if i increase fat and cut out protein i will have whoosh of like 4 pounds!

  • Isn't it amazing how that works? :)

  • Most science-related studies know about this process, but don't put two and two together.

  • The SECOND time that I took biochemistry at college, I drew the diagrams for the entire process of gluconeogenesis on my dorm room wall above my bed (in pencil). It's complicated. Since I was taking agriculture, we didn't relate any of it to weightloss.

  • Wow, I never knew anything about this, thanks for educating us Jimmy! I started lC-ing last year and lost 50lbs but gained it back thru the holidays. I'm ready to start again but will start induction Monday, as going on a trip this weekend.Don't want to make it hard on myself when away from home, but practicing low carb already! :)

  • THANKS so much for watching, queenmaryland, and I encourage you to go back and watch Episode 39-42 where Christine and I talk about the basics of low-carb Induction. It might be a great refresher course for you. :D YOU CAN DO IT!!!

  • Thanks for this info! I think this is my problem !! My weight is coming off very slow although Ive been working out every day. So should I increase my Fat intake? and can you eat too much fat?

  • Yes, increase your fat, keep your protein moderate, and your carbs very low in the form of non-starchy, green leafy vegetables. It's IMPOSSIBLE to eat too much fat because your body won't let you eat more than you need before you throw it up. :)

  • I am a little confused. How much protein is to much protein?

  • It depends on the individual. Some people utilize the glucose they receive through gluconeogenesis very well and can get away with eating more protein and carbs. Others cannot. You should remember that dietary fat is most important first, dietary protein is moderately important second, and dietary carbohydrates are the least important. It's what makes livin' la vida low-carb as effective as it is for helping you lose weight and get healthy.

  • I have never heard of gluconeogenesis! Now I know why my weight loss is so slow.I eat way to much protein! THANKYOU

  • HAPPY to help! :)

  • thanks jimmy

  • HAPPY TO EDUMACATE! :D

  • you guys are awesome! KEEP EM COMING

  • We appreciate your support! THANKS for watching! :D

  • This does confuse me. I have been doing low carb for 4 years. If I can't eat too much protein, and all foods have carbs but meat. So what in the whole wide wide world does one eat? *said in jest* I can't be consuming a stick of butter. So help me out here.

  • Well, consuming a stick of butter would be a lot healthier for you than most anything else out there. Gluconeogenesis doesn't say to NOT eat protein, but to be careful that you don't eat too much of it. Fat is the only macronutrient that has a passive role in insulin release. Carbs make insulin as does protein in excess. That's why you want to keep your fat high, your protein moderate, and your carbs low. It's the beauty of livin' la vida low-carb. :)

  • wow! I just learned something new. Very Cool!

LOL, I love the word of the day!! Very funny!! hehe

  • It's a REALLY fun word. :D

  • Hmm,, and I thought I was smart,,never heard that word, and I sure didnt know the liver did that for me,(thanks mr. liver) Great info, great video, 5*'s

  • Everyone needs to know about gluconeogenesis...it explains a lot about healthy low-carb living.

  • excellent video! I couldn't have put it any better myself. My dad has been losing weight on a HIGH fat, moderate protein diet. I believe too much protein stalls his weight loss.

  • It's a surprising revelation about protein. But it is 100% true.

  • thanks! great information!

  • Happy to help share the knowledge. :)

  • On the beginning (genesis hehe) part, I think Jimmy should change the picture of him with brown hair with a picture of himself with the superblonde hair. I like the show and the podcast. The program I am doing is a combanation of 5 days of low carb, 1 day of low fat and low carb, 1 day of only fruit, and 5 days of low fat three times over. It is called Medabolic Surge: Rapid Fat Loss by Nick Nilsson. It is for me to lose fat but put on or gain muscle. Well, I'll see ya

    Cosmopop1

  • Thank you cosmopop1! Interesting diet...best wishes to you! :D

  • Huh! Well, I learned a lot from this one!! Thanks!!

  • THANKS Airen! This is an important concept to grasp for anyone who is low-carbing. :)

  • Wow I learned a lot in this video... I'm back on Atkins!

  • YEAH Angielooo! YOU CAN DO IT!!!
