Not many duets can come close to the perfection, not only in the singing, but in the facial expressions and body language in general, that generates the best chemistry between two great performers. Thanks for showing it.
I played piano for Jack while we were at University High School in West LA and played for Joanie while we were at Santa Monica City College -- "those were the days my friend... we thought they'd never end"...
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
This is an excellent example of the comaraderie that existed between performers and the audience. It is like a touch of musicial comedy as a vignette. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but they were REALLY singing those words to each other on a personal level. Good stuff!
This was back when entertainers relied on voice quality, great musical writing & arranging for impact. They didn't wear revealing or "food" clothes, nor engage in attention getting destructive antics. Joanie Sommers looks and sounds wonderful fully dressed. Jack Jones is a class act, also. Thank you for reminding me what REAL ENTERTAINMENT used to look like. Peace to All.
Note how when Joan Crawford enters Jack pulls her in and gives her his undivided attention as if to say, "now that the song's over, let me turn my attention to the real woman on stage
Songs, singers and voice were really different before. They're very beautiful , nice to your ear and their singing voice were really a God given talent. compared to todays.
What ever happened to Joanie? I know she got older which is the death to many girl singers. As a kid I listed to my parents records and Jack and Joanie figured prominently.
Joanie Sommers got her start doing commercials for Pepsi Cola, which belonged to Joan Crawford. Thse commercials completely rejuvenated that company and gave Coca Cola real competition.
There is a good thumbnail discussion of Joanie Sommers on Wikipedia online if you wish to know just a little more about her. I remember her from various appearances and teen shows she did in the early to mid '60s. She should've had much bigger career than what she did. She has (had) a great voice very suited to the Bossa Nova era. I think her finest album/CD was "Softly the Brazilian Sound" from 1965 with guitarist Laurendo Aliemeda (sorry if I misspelled).
@burnt62 was the very 'sexy voice' spokesperson for Pepsi 'for those who think young' on AM radio in early 60's. (you can find this on youtube). Had numerous 'teeners' circa '62, on Warner Bros. , 'Johnny Get Angry' being most famous. Also did much pop such as this. Think her best might be the blue-eyed soul 'Never Throw Your Dreams Away' circa '66.
OH I LOVE THIS SONG and JACK JONES with the beautiful Joanie...what a song, what a beautiful couple, such lyrics, such delivery...OK, there's a heaven...How can any man be so devilishly handsome and talented....not fair...
It's funny how everyone classifies the 60s style as hippies, etc when in reality most of the '60s had normal style like this until about 1967, when fashion started changing(Afros, miniskirts, bell bottoms, etc.)
I agree wholeheartedly. They just don't make music like this anymore. 'Tis a pity what we have these days: noise that "passes" for music. Where oh where have all the singers gone?
Some songs bring back memories so vivid (nothing specific; just feelings really), that just for a brief moment, I can smell the air and experience the emotions of the '60s. Nothing can match it! Today, people pay big money to go and watch 'artists' lipsync. I hate what the world has become!
Good stuff. I most recently saw Jack live at Catalina's club in Los Angeles in 2007 but never had the opportunity to see Joanie live. Her jazz/pop and bossa nova CDs are great. She's a terrific and underrated singer.
Joanie Sommers had several hits in the 60's like JOHNNY GET ANGRY and
ONE BOY but I'm not sure if she had other records out that did well on the charts - she had a very good voice, vocally she sounded a little like Eydie Gorme.

Two of the greatest underrated voices in American song. Jack and Joanie have superb style, interpretation and voice texture. I'm still waiting for Jack's "A Song For You" to be released on CD (@ 1971). In the '70s, he had a TV show out of Canada called "The Palace". He performed "I Could Have Been A Sailor". Even on TV it was so powerful I leaped from my chair to dial a friend who happened to be watching. He said, "I know I know I saw it!!! We were ASTONISHED at what we had just witnessed!
