This is shown by the shower scene, in which males and females are together in the shower as if it was completely normal. To answer the other Q, It wasnt legal but, the rangers were special, given that the irish army is utterly useless and tiny, they are the one good unit we have, and the other guy was a regular and I was just a reserve, I had a choice, take the hits, in public or leave.
