  • haha love the cheeky look Prince has on his face. Like he knows he owned that solo. Classic

  • LOVE this Helter, what you added with George gave me chills~~ George ..extraordinary.

  • @Flipper...if ya watch again you will see that the guitar never came back down...

  • PRINCE is my idol!!

  • Prince ALSO writes EVERY note and plays EVERY instrument on EVERY ONE of his records... if you actually listen to any of his music, you'll hear what a nasty, crazy, innovative guitar player he actually is. He's absolutely incredible, and probably one of the most slept on guitar players of this century; notably because of his outrageous persona... all part of the genius.

  • I am really puzzled at all you people, only NOW you realize what a musical giant Prince is? If Prince was nothing but a guitarist in a band he would be considered the best guitarist in the world! but no, cuz he does so much more!!!!!!!! He walked off the stage telling everyone eat my dust!

  • damn! DAYUMMM!!! PRINCE IS DA SHYTTT!!! the dude is amazing!!! he is my favorite guitarist along w/ Hendrix. but Hendrix is gone :( so now i have PRINCE :) .

  • My god can Prince throw down!

  • This is the guitar players song.

  • nah, george would have loved that solo.

  • I understand all the raving comments about Prince's guitar solo (spectacular and over the top). But for anybody who really knew George Harrison's music, chances are he would have hated that guitar solo.

  • @sandykopi no way... george's son is right there in the back standing in AWE of prince, while laughing and smiling... if his own son is loving it, "chances are" george would've loved it... granted, he probably would've hated the fact that Prince threw such a gorgeous telecaster in the air afterwards... but he just destroyed the hell out of it anyways... what good was it to him anymore?

  • Prince - wow!

  • AWESOMENESS!!!!

  • they needed give Prince some more breathing room ..cuz he's taking off .. lighting striking .. Get it P go on wit your bad self. The cat in the back on acustic is groovin on him. check him out smiling ...

  • Dhani gives it away with that smile at 3:34 that something legit is about to go down.

  • ORGASM!

  • God! Prince is GOD! give me chills!

  • didnt know prince had guitar chops. holy shiit he can frikin rock

  • there is Prince and I turned and I have no one to share it with

  • Prince was called Funk/Punk back on the days, on concert he was as showman as James Brown but with the acid guitars of Hendrix, and for a moment he was challenging Kfraftwerk and Gary Numan for the next cool wave of electronic music, he was kinda like the black David Bowie with an edge.

After MTV people got the wrong impression about him, many use to compare him to that other Pop black artist, but Prince was so much more then that, I'm glad that finally people are discovering the real Prince.

  • Prince is God

  • Prince fucking rooooocks!!!

  • Danke ... tak ... muchas gracias... merci ... thank you a gazillion times for adding the footage of George & Ringo at the beginning plus George & Eric at the end. Both performances of this classic were epic. Without a doubt, the Quiet Beatle's best composition. Prince's performance was superb ... no, make that sublime ... and Dhani's reaction to Prince's antics was priceless. 5 stars all the way!

  • oh, 5 stars ;)

    thank you for sharing! ;)

  • steve winwood, jeff lyne (ELO), Steve Winwood, D. Harrison, Prince...ah Tom Petty...

Prince has done better than this but this is a clapton solo...

  • How many times do we have the chance to see members from Dire Straits, Hearbreakers, ElO, Traffic playing with Prince?

    This is epic!

  • Gets better everytime I watch it

  • Many people think that just because they din't knew Prince rock skills, legends dint knew ether but early on his career Prince was discover by Carlos Santana, Led Zepellin and he even open for the Rolling Stones 1981 tour, still his bad ass side go deeper then that, Prince was a frequent surprise guest on First Ave, Minneapolis punk club, even Johnny Rotten mention Prince as a true punk on his autobiographical book and everyone from Pink Floyd to Radiohead had cover Prince songs.

    Peace!

  • i think what amazes people about this performance is, they did not know prince could play like that, did you ever watch the guitar work on purple rain, from 1984, look it is simple the guy is an all around master of instruments like it or not the man knows his shit and has always pushed his limits all his career, give credit where credit is due, prince owned that solo and it was a great tribute to a great song and man, hands down

  • It's amazing how much George Harrison's son Danny looks just like him!

  • Is funny that It took Prince 30 years to be discover by the traditional and very conservative classic rock crowd, but this small guy it's been rocking since the 70's, I invite everyone to search for Prince 80's club gigs were he rock the guitar amazingly.

Lately Prince hasn't been to rebel but in my humble opinion his musicianship has evolve to a very mature sound, you should chek out his Coachella and Jazz festival performances, the guy is simple brilliant, probably the best of his gen.

  • Damn. George's son looks just like him.

  • I understand that young people don't know much about Prince guitar playing, but the comments from the old generation seems like they never read a mag or watch tv on the last 30 years.

Between 1980 and 1988 Prince was considered by many the new Hendrix, praised by critics and experts as the new Mozart.

Miles Davis call him "the best musician ever", Robert Plant call him "a genious like I never could be", Clapton say that it was his favorite 80's act etc.

    Cultivate yourself oldies.

  • a nice quoto from bono U2

"prince has more talent in his toenail clippings than the rest of us"

  • Prince is a awesome musician. this is a great video.

  • Holy shit! Prince?? Never knew he could shred like that! Bravo. New respect.

  • gotta love that tele

  • WOW

  • Steely,

    Thank you

Marc Mann did a great job!

This song is a guitar player's appreciation for the instrument.

Mann did an excellent job, from the heart.

I consider this as Prince's best performance.

He is thanking George for identifying the guitar,

His whole heart is in the lead breaks.

What more could you ask for?

  • SO TRUE!

  • Can't help but to feel that George was out there - somewhere - saying, "Fuckin' A!" (Or, something similar....)

  • I've seen Prince do much better solo's especially some of his more bluesy and jazzy stuff but this was great too

  • I agree, Prince had done better solos then this one, just watch his Coachella performance, but still this was orgasmic.

  • brilliant video, prince was tearing it up, but what i find funny is how much prince just can't stand being in the background, he has to be up front! 4:00 into it is where prince's solo was meant to stop, but did he? haha NO! he carried on cos he's a badass mother fucker! haha much respect, songs so much better with princes solo!

  • Hard to imagine a better tribute: his son partaking in it...as well as Prince pouring all the feeling into the song...as it deserves to be played.

  • Right on!

By the way, had you heard anything about a "who's the best guitarist in the world debate" prior to watching this tribute to George Harrison? I must have accidentally thrown my invitation away with all of the other rubbish that gets stuffed in my mailbox.

  • "...numbers add up to nothin...'" (Thanks, Neil!)

  • Great rendition - playing and singing - by ALL...of one of the greatest songs, ever. What (more) can be said about Prince's performance: he was - simply - utterly fantastic. He burned it up...turned that Telecaster into a transporter!

  • Excuse my ignorance, but who is the lead guitar player playing the sunburst Strat? He looks familiar, but I cannot place him. Not nearly as good as Prince thought.

  • Marc Mann. I thought he did more than a tidy job of keeping the mood until Prince let loose with his own thing (-:

  • If this video doesn't prove Prince is the 2nd best guitar player ever (Jimi is #1, even Prince knows that) then I don't know what could.

What I love about his style is the fact he can shred. Like when he started he had all the funk/R&B styles down but then the 80's happened and the hairbands came in and Prince added enough Eddie Van Halen style to his playing to turn heads.

Now he is hands down the greatest living guitar player.

  • Wow!

    One of my favorite songs.

Jeff Lynne is excellent singer, I did not know Prince was such a great guitar player. Now they are both two of my favorite artists.

  • I have been a Prince fan 4 over 27 years and this was just another day at the office 4 this musical genius! These rock fans don't want to accept the fact that His Royal Badness rules !!! They forgot about Purple Rain and all the other classics that he tears the guitar up on ! this isn't even his best guitar performance!! Stop Hating !!! He is a true PLAYER !!! He is to versatile a musician to be just considered a great guitar player! He's got style and substance to boot ! Purple Rain Forever!

  • AMAZING! The best version of this song EVER!

  • Prince throws the guitar at the end of the song and IT DOESN'T COME BACK DOWN!!! Where did it go??????

  • Prince always has 4 guys that travel with him when he performs. They hand him his instruments, catch them, and even hold him up as you can see when he leans into the crowd, per his interview on Tavis Smiley.

  • good to know. I was gonna go with "Prince threw the guitar up to heaven and George Harrison caught it".

  • That's a good one. You seem cool. Look up my same user name on Facebook. Prince is really under estimated and misunderstood. I haven't been a die-hard fan, but have always respected and loved his music the past 25 years.

  • Shades of the 'handlers' James Brown had to 'assist' him on-stage with his cape, etc.

  • Love Tom Petty simile in 4:54 when Prince is fallen on his back.

  • Is Prince BadAss or what!

  • fo sho! he pimp slaps hoes all the time

  • Excellent reading by Prince. Great when considering the original solo on the Beatles recording was played by Eric Clapton! RIP George.

I saw the whole special on PBS and I'm curious. Why didn't Dhani solo on any of the numbers? It was his father's tribute show. He must not be much of a guitarist. Pity, he's the spittin' image of his father otherwise.

  • Good solo but i've seen Prince do much better. Good to see that alot of the idiots are finally focusing on his talent and his genius instead of calling him fag etc.

  • prince is looking at tom petty like fool quit it im doing a guitar solo

  • Always has and always will be my favorite musician of ALL TIME!!!!! BAR-NONE

  • Totally agree with Fyrfox198, incredible performance, probably the best ever. Prince as ever sensational! What a tribute!!!

  • Heart felt performance and showmanship.....THAT'S HOW YOU FUCKIN' ENTERTAIN PEOPLE ...........Prince, Petty, Dani & band layed it out for all to see........EXCELLENT...!!!

  • LOL! Good hands Jimi! Watch Petty at the 5:15 or so mark. He's jammin' with Prince and rockin his head. He's enjoying the hell out of it. Prince used to be too shy to get on stage with other greats - that's why he bailed on the We Are the World song - and now he's "all growed up" (sic) and can jam this cut and interact with Petty and Dhani. He's able to jump in and out with ease. He's not in a focused trance or any of that bs - he's simply jammin for fun. Thats cool as hell. 1 BAD MF !!

  • Hendrix let him borrow his ax for the show. After Prince shredded it at the end he politely tossed it back up to him. Obviously that's what happened to the guitar.

  • Well done Prince! Good send off like a Viking funeral!

  • grew up in the 80's. never was a prince fan til i saw this video, he is one of the most underrated guitar players! i wish all aspiring players could see this! P.S. watch DANI!

  • Ive been a fan of Prince for as long as I can remember and this solo just gives me the chills. Its also kind of frustrating cos as a fan id love it if he would release an album of all out rock music cos I know he'd nail it, he'd blow minds just like he blew the minds of all who watched this performance. He's the most underrated musician of the modern era..and its funny how he's playing at a tribute for the most underrated musician from the previous era..legends the 2 of em

  • like someone said in another post - the guitar isnt even his best instrument, it simply works best for him during performances. Believe it or not he's an even better drummer and piano player then he is a guitarist. That's simply sick.

I really can't think of any one musician that's so versatile and able to make popular music so effortlessly.

I'm sure there are a few though. Just can't think of any.

  • Joe Jackson ? ;-) He writes his own music, lyrics AND play,s several instruments ;-)

  • Joe Jackson?? You really want to go with that? You sure? You don't want a life line or somethin'? ;-)

I still say that for a non studio version - Prince not playing with his own band, not playing a song he regulary performs, not even playin with The Time or someone he's jammed with before - this version and solo is undoubtedly the best all around - that includes the backup group-Petty, Lynn, the Paul imposter on piano, and yeah-even goofy azz Dhani - BRAVO

  • I agree with you, for Prince this is a improvisation gig, but if he got the chance to adapted for his live shows or the studio he will kickit to a higher level.

Lots of clasic tock fans are getting to critical with this performance without seen Prince live before.

Prince commented on tv that his experienced with Tom Petty was amazing.

  • You forgot to mention Prince's bass playing. Check out his bass line on 'Let's Work'. He packs personality, passion and his melodic gift into everything he performs.

  • i owned that album. Side two first cut - yeah, Prince wore that shit out. Even better was his bass work on the Time's first album-everyone knows he recorded all of the music on the first one himself - especially the cut Get It Up - it never got the respect it was due. I read in the book about the Minn. genius that the bassist for the Time, Terry Lewis, got sick before a concert so Prince stood in the back and played the bass for their entire set~then he went out and did his own show.MF SICK

  • Prince is one bad MoFo. No one dares step on stage with this man and not know there craft. I'v see him eat cats alive on stage when challenged. He is the baddest men in the land. I think mybe Steve Via can give him a run.

  • I think enough has been said about Prince and the performance overall. It was amazing, no doubt. I just wanted to say, long live the telecaster.

When people hear that I play one they always say it's just for country. For shame.

  • prince is a great guitarist but he isnt the best

  • He was never claiming to be. The cool thing is that he's great at a whole bunch of other instruments too including piano, drums and bass. Guitar isn't even his first instrument, piano is. Now THAT'S awesome.

  • There is no greatest guitarist alive.

  • where does the guitar go at the end??

    thats magic

  • This performance just gave me an eargasm!

  • OMFG Prince fucking killed it! I had no idea he had that much talent on the guitar

    I mean... what the hell?

  • dayum dayum dayum

  • Prince is the king. Too bad the greedy bastard wont let us watch his own stuff on youtube

  • Somewhere, George is smiling. Awesome solo from Prince. Wish he'd play that way more often.

  • Prince been playing like this for many decades, I seen him live many times and this is nothing, I mean the little fucker really rocks!

    Great solo, orgasmic.

  • he plays that way all the time

  • lol prince just owned all of them

  • Dude, i had no idea that Prince could ever wale on the guitar like that. I always thought that mothafucker was wierd.

  • LOL! I understand, people think of him as a mainstream pop artist, but he's a genius muscician, theres a reason that he has been covered by all the great ones:

Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Tori Amos, REM, Gary Newman, David Bowie, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Phish, TV on the Radio, U2, Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones, White Stripes etc.

Tell me the name of a great artist that isn't weird?

  • Listen to his guiter work on Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki, Purple Rain, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, etc. It's not loud headbanger stuff. It's subtle, understated and beautiful.

I'm sure Prince has some great guiter on later releases, but frankly, I haven't listened to anything beyond Graffiti Bridge. LOL, I'm old school, I know. I loved the Minneapolis sound. When he abandoned it I sort of lost interest.

  • HIS ROYAL BADNESS!!!!!!

  • Genius of rocknroll interacting amusingly and respectfully. Prince coming near slowly with an extraordinary solo of his own and totally integrated to the song. George's son happy. TP respecting Prince and opening him the space he deserves. A rare moment.

    Thanks HFS

Is that Paul at the piano?

    Paulo Brasil.

  • I believe it's Steve Winwood

  • I watched some (great) videos of Winwood performing recently. I think you are right, McCartnee. Thank you.

  • RIP beautiful George & John thanks helter for brilliant share

  • RIP George Harrison!!

We Love and miss you soo much!!<3
