He was travelling fast enough for the water to act as a solid surface so he literally bounced when he hit the water which knocked him unconscious and probably broke several bones too. Ever belly flopped into the water? big red painful bruise? well imagine doing that onto water at 80 miles an hour falling 30+ meters... you are suddenly the worlds biggest jam sandwich.
