I saw a few painters help with their OSL effect by priming in black and then hitting it with a light white primer mist from above (spraying 45 degrees down from different sides, which gives you a head start on showing where the highlights would be as the white hits the topmost parts and fades into the black. Then even your lighter, highlighted areas you are working on a lighter color to begin with. Haven't tried it myself but it might be good for what you're doing!
