These monks are trained to fight unsophisticated bandits who raid temples. Other warriors, say a knight, have been in countless wars and have been trained to fight whatever the king tells them to.

The monk would stand a chance against a trained swordsman. Good theatrics, but little practical use against anything other than unarmored bandits.
