  • i wanna see him play on a fretless guitar

  • Simply Amazing

  • This has been the most inspiring and intriguing band I have ever heard for the longest time and has been for years and I dream to be as good and deep and involved in my music as John Butler trio and I Hope that they read this so that they know they are "Awesome," the guitar player touches all my sound emotions and relates to my style in a way noncomparable with any other musicians.

  • If I hadn't gotten into playing guitar a little over three years ago, before hearing this masterpiece, then this would have gotten me into. I never really took the guitar all too seriously, but this has revitalized the energy I had once I began playing. I cried when I first heard this (not afraid to admit it). Completely turned my day around.

  • @cadgod120 I listen to it everytime my day twists up into a mess.

  • breath taking..

  • You followed Niki's link here too? ;p

    PEACE FROM BRAZIL

  • YEEEAAAAHHHHH

    vem pro brasil!!!!!

  • i started trying to learn this song but then realized there was no way it would have the same feel. he is the one and only person for this song!

  • I agree ^^ This man is definitly amazing ! he's the one for this song... I've got so much emotion when I listen to him playing...

  • its because its a song that changes as time passes, you will never be able to duplicate it...there must be like 3 or 5 versions of this that he's played.

  • yeah, sure ;) he's amazing, really... I'm always impressed because it's always diferent !

  • I MUST go to see him !

  • i wish i could get an mp3 of every single ocean on youtube he is so amazing and has changed my life forever!!!!!!!!

listning to john and being able to play his music for the past 2 years has been such an experiance i wont forget, this man has powers haha:)

hopefully i turn out just like him one day from being taught by the person who taught john himself. heaven :)

  • I cant wait to fly the 6000 miles in april to go see this guy!

  • u lot talk some bolloks, just stop saying all this bullshit, hes freaking awesome. THE END

  • standing freaking O

  • Wow! just wow! such a powerful piece of music, put so nicely without any words...

  • When people talk about great guitar solos they usually mention Pierre Bensusan or Tommy Emanuel, both amazing acoustic guitarists. But I feel that those solos that are hailed as "the greatest" are so complex that they loose a melody and rhythm. I think that this solo is complex enough to be impressive, while not sacrificing melody and rhythm. This is why this is the greatest musical solo in my book. It would be a challenge to find a song that means more to more people than this right here.

  • a lot of guitarist great guitarist musicians dont write lyrics to their songs, john butler does, though this is pure instrumental theres more behind it, loved what you said 4u2onr, so true. SO TRUE what you said!

  • You took the words write out of my mouth, well literally right out of my comment earlier...

  • haha!! i knew i read this already earlier:)

    how lazy!

  • that was the best version i ever heard...i love this guy...i got to shake his hand at lollapalooza...what a privledge

  • hammer,einfach der hammer!!

  • An epic

  • agreed wholeheartedly. I've not seen a guitar solo that can make so many people cry and feel emotionally full like this. This also has the beauty of being written for reasons other than showing off or attaching the most skill. But we should just accept it all and call it beautiful and not have to compare :)

  • I don't know all those famous guitar solos and I'm sure there are many artists out there that have proven skill an harmony with their intruments. The only thing i may say about THIS is... WHEW!

I mean, as mikhealmalisse already mentioned, "Ocean" doe reflect so much more than just skill: To me its like an adventure hearing it everytime again. I wonder about the meaning of the title respective the acoustics. And I feel very touched by that part, when he introduces those high tones... Just awesome

  • @watamon666 I know it may be an electric solo piece, but look up a tune called Epilogue by Opeth. I think you might like it :)

  • No, No, NOOOOOOOO, is john starting to recede at the temples!? what happens if he loses his hair, oh god i would actually cry. Awesome version as well, my inspiration :)

  • he didnt wait to go bald, he lopped off the dreads a few months ago!

  • It is truley amazing to see such magic happen from a union between a human and guitar.

    Inspirational.

  • i was at this show, its the most amazing experience and i encourage anyone to see him live if they get the oppurtunity, its mind blowing how talented one person can be

  • it would be so awsome if he went back in the studio and re-recorded this song.....it sounds so much better live tho, so i dont think he should ruin a good thing i guess lol

jb you are one of the few musicians that can actually change peoples lives....as evidenced by this song....life is an ocean bro...

  • i have watched many different versions and listened to ocean hundreds of times

but every time i watch it, it inspirers me as much as it did the first time i watched to learn how to play it

it is nearly impossible to play it exactly how he does

one of the best guitarists to walk this earth!

    AMEN!!

  • That was unbelievable

  • ive seen people play jimmy page solos and couldnt tell a difference.

ive seen kids play steve vai songs perfectly.

ive seen solos that can be always covered.

try finding someone who can comfortably cover this song with the same emotion and technique.

this guys could very well be the greatest guitarist in the world.

  • totally agree with you man.....the emotion he puts into his playing rivals that of clapton, hendricks, ect....

  • he never always plays it exactly the same. just pure brilliance. the best guitar solo song ever in my estimation...

  • actually a friend of mine did, in front of a crowd of a few hundred. But he improvised a bit on the max sessions one. It was magnificent.

  • I was told it was called the prayer. Inspirational. Nothing like it ever

  • It is so fitting, like the Ocean, unpredictable.

  • beautiful sound, so many versions of "Ocean" and I've watched them all. This version definitely has the best sound quality.

  • amen, this was on my b-day!

  • AMEN!

  • amen ;)

  • best song ever EVER best instrumental can i get an amen

  • Amen!

If "Ocean" doesn't go down as one of the best songs of this generation it would be blasphemy.

  • Since its different all the time.

That means that He keeps a certain main tone everytime, yet improvises the other parts.

  • By the looks on his face, I swear he is improvising most of it but keeping a familiar tune.

  • It's different every time and yet it still manages to amaze me every time.

  • He is like the best guitar player i have ever seen whit a 11 sting guitar...love it

  • He's incredible. The most amazing guitar player i've ever seen!!

  • goosebumps!

  • Besides being one of the best acoustic performances ive ever seen, it is also one of the most mesmerising and beautiful pieces of music ive ever heard.. pure spine tingling brilliance. Hes a genius!!

  • Its CGCGCE

  • ok, thanks :)

  • This isn't just a 'song', this is a masterpiece! No actual melody but still it's catchy :P And man how this one kills your fingertips when hammering:D Btw, is his guitar in DADGAD?

  • J'adore c'est tout simplement extraordinaire ;)

  • that is incredible.. how can one man posses so much talent?

  • By eating the offspring of all known musicians :)

  • BEAUTIFUL!

  • my god that was incredible. there are so many versions of that song, and this one is by far the best i've heard

  • beautiful

  • ocean is a brilliant tune and this backward version is just as good.

  • most powerful and beautiful song i've ever heard played on solo acoustic guitar... you're sitting shotgun white summer black mountain side

  • JOHN FOREVER!

  • this is one of my favorite songs im yet to hear, and i dont even like any music that isnt electronic, *raises glass* to you JBT, thanks for making my day :)

  • whua it's so amasing...

  • and tedblack47 this is excellent quality, the person who took this was up on the second level and far away....the strange sounds that his guitar is makin at times is intentionaly used by him from a pedal

  • this was so amazing, i was at this gig but i couldnt get 2 the front cos there was a barrier midway through the standing section >:| big bummer

  • Damn!! he is good!!!

  • this is a sweet song, no mater how you play it the melody will always sound good

  • cant wait to see him at the woodford folk festival on the 27th. i hope he plays a similar version to this one.

  • hey i saw your comment about jonh butler. My brother saw him at woodford last week. He said he played ocean and it was amazing, did you catch him? i cant wait to see him again at big day out in a few weeks.

  • yeah saw the woodford gig, it was pretty sweet. not the best versions ive heard but pretty good all the same. i met him and shannon birchall there and they are really nice blokes, both of em

  • i agree , really good version of "ocean" , i hope JBT gonna come again in fracne soon i wanna see them in concert again

  • i love JOHN BUTLER

    inspires me alot as well

  • This is the best version i've heard!
