I however have had the unpleasant experience of taking Lithium, withdrawing from Lithium, and then trying to continue living after depending on it for three years. This song encompasses this struggle quite well.

I personally believe that this song shows her struggle between the emptiness and misery of being alone missing someone and the fear of moving on without them. If you listen closely to the lyrics of the song, imagine "Lithium" being the name of the person - it paints a clearer picture when you realize that a person is like the effects of lithium for her.
