A good record, and FAR from the first electrical Whiteman side. I just counted 67 sides recorded before Valencia, starting over a year before. Victor 19682, "Tell Me More!" was the first electrical side, recorded May 5, 1925.
Wow! Some great stuff! VALENCIA was a 1926 MGM Silent starring Mae Murray, Lloyd Hughes, Roy D'Arcy and Noah Beery. It is not a lost film. Buried some place in the Warner vault. Would love to see it some time. Get's an occasional live screening, but has never been shown on TCM so far.
I remember my mom telling me how she and her folks sang this song, during their move from Boston to LA, in 1926. This is the first time I've heard it. Thanks.
That's right, this is The REAL Jose Padilla who also wrote "El Relicario", not that wannabe terrorist asshole who should've been strung up by his genitals and then shot - and that just for misusing this great composer's name.
great fidelity. great arrangement love it. typical late 1920'ssound. Great Singer!!!!!!****who is it? love violins. but the singer is fabulous!!!!!!!!****love this post thank you poster!!!!!!****found it by mistake my good fortune. ROGHARM
"Valencia" was composed really by Maestro Santiago Lope Gonzalo (b. 1871-d. 1909). The first version that I'd heard of this "paso-doble" march (two-step) was recorded in the fifties in a Colombia label by spanish orchester "La Banda de El Empastre". Sorry by my comments, but although Paul Witheman made a great effort, but he was American, and the best versions are made by spanish bands and performers.
Great post. Most enjoyable.
Thank you for sharing, and thanks to meehall121 for sending.

@limon276 But of course! Italians sing bel canto arias the best, Spaniards perform the pasodoble the best, and Americans have Dancing with the Stars.

This is not the same Jose Padilla who composed "La violetera"?
In any case, an old favorite of mine, very happy you posted it.
