@gilbo70118 Most Army contracts are now for 8 years. Depending on specifics, many people serve 2 years active duty (not counting training time) and then are placed into Guards/Reserve unit. To qualify for the Special Forces you need at least 3 years of Army experience. You have to apply for selection and then wait to be contacted. That's it in a nutshell. Keep in mind the most important details are the ones on your contact so talk to your recruiting rep.

Anyone trained with a weapon is a threat, and Taliban are actually some of the worst suicidal trained athletes aside from special forces (with the exception that official forces don't blow themselves up if they die to cause more damage). Russians are more afraid and likely to rout, especially with their 'pound in the numbers' tactics which would fail with a few well placed air strikes or modern artillery.

@uchio People who think British Army Officers are incompetent "toffs" are people who have never been in the Army or are REMF big timers. The platoon Commander in an Infantry platoon HAS to be the fittest and most switched on bloke there because he's who the boys look to when the shit hits the fan. Yes they are mostly well spoken and from a "proper" background, but it doesn't mean they are disliked or incompetent.

@Hampshirelad91 My Platoon Commander in training was only about 18 months older than me and had already led a Scots Guards Platoon out in Afghan. He was stick thin, had typically officer like scruffy hair and spoke the Queen's English, but he would always carry the heaviest bloke in the Platoon, and always be first across the finish line. He was respected by all, even those who joined under the medias pretence of Officers. Basically, @itshowitis91-you haven't got a Scooby.

@Angles786 Actually, almost all men in Afghan villages are armed for their own protection. There has been no government in most towns for ages. Taliban means "students" in pahstun, for which talib is the singular. They were the "students' of the Madrasas, that is, traditionally religious Muslim schools. "Mujaheddin" means "wholy warrior" and it is a generic name for any fighter of Islam.

Shocking just how inapt the Taliban fighters are.. 20+ of them literally surround a dozen Brits and manage to wound just one soldier. Quite frankly people don't realize just how lucky we are to be facing the Taliban as opposed to foes that previous generations had to face, like Germans, Russians etc.

@vladbcom That's a very biased statement coming from an inexperienced civilian. Anyone trained with a weapon is a threat, and Taliban are actually some of the worst suicidal trained athletes aside from special forces (with the exception that official forces don't blow themselves up if they die to cause more damage). Russians are more afraid and likely to rout, especially with their 'pound in the numbers' tactics which would fail with a few well placed air strikes or modern artillery.
