I was 6 1/2 yrs old when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. That Sun night, as was Dad's habit, the radio was turned on for the news and then the "Kate Smith Hour". I was confused about all the fear with the grown-ups. Then, Kate started singing God Bless Amrica. For some reason, her singing that song made my hair stand on end - and it was the 1st time I had ever seen my Daddy cry.
It effects me the same way today as it did then.

Years ago,1975, I was in a restaurant in Frankfurt, Germany and the waitress asked a couple where they were from. The replied, America. They were speaking Spanish with a thick Argentinian accent. I was sitting next to them and asked them where they were really from. They said, "Argentina". I asked them why the said they were from America. Composed by Irving Berlin, an immigrant from Imperial Russia around 1905. He wrote many tunes which our grandparents heard during the beginning of the 20th Century. One of his earlier compositions, "Down Below" was an anti war song, but as time went on, he changed his mind and wrote many other patriotic tunes. I remember Kate Smith from the earlier days. Composed by Irving Berlin, an immigrant from Imperial Russia around 1905. He wrote many tunes which our grandparents heard during the beginning of the 20th Century. One of his earlier compositions, "Down Below" was an anti war song, but as time went on, he changed his mind and wrote many other patriotic tunes. I remember Kate Smith from the earlier days. The "Americas" encompass the entire "New World"--North, Central, and South America. Every time someone says "America" when he or she means the country called the "United States of America" I get so angry. And by the way I am a dual citizen of Israel and of the UNITED STATES OF America!!!

part III of my geography lesson. There are some countries that teach that there are 6 continents. Combining North and South America into one continent called The Americas. (note the 's' on the end) America to them would be a country in the Americas.. Some other countries combine Europe and Asia into Eurasia (but distinguish North and South America).

America is in the continent of North America. The full and official name for the country is the United States of America (since America is made up of 50 states each with their own state governments and constitutions, but united as one soverign country, hence "the united states of".... )

I dont get this song. How does God bless America? Does he stand back and look at the 180+ countries in the world and go "hmmm which country do I like enough to bless?" God doesn't just bless America. Nor does the song CLAIM that. You, in your childish envy interpret it that way. The title (and lyric) doesn't make the claim you suggest/imply in a desperate attempt to give your feeble insults credibility. The title ASKS God to bless America and to stand beside her, from the mountains to the prairies, to the oceans, white with foam. It's as simple as that!

There's an expression we have in this country: "If I have to explain, you wouldn't understand." Clearly that applies here. You're mind is set in cement. Not just with its own, but ANY time there's a tragedy around the world, it is ALWAYS the United States that has been the first to show up with aid and comfort. It is simply a song. It is a prayer of a sort. Many, many countries hve anthems and venerate God in in patriotic songs and sayings. What is wrong with this?
In my work, I go with what people like to use as their theme in their therapy. It works for them. I find it amazing how people try and put down other's themes and beliefs. Do tell: what is the purpose of denegrating what people believe in?

Some use it in a hurtful way perhaps to make themselves feel superior in a pathetic sort of way. For others its a deep seeded distaste or even hatred for the belief. And yet some people like myself in poor taste perhaps use it as an easy way to crack a joke. You can see I removed alot of what I said out of respect for those offended.

Absolutely not. Your appreciation for liberty is refreshing. I guess when I think of America, I do not think of the government at all. I think of the actual people and the landscape and I know it is still a good place. Im guessing you read my earlier joke regarding God and his motives for blessing America as opposed to other countries. It was misconstrued and I have since apologized (even though like you I believe in my American liberty to say whatever the fuck I want).

This recording of the Irving Berlin song has a hidden side to it, it was made during the Second World War to mobilize citizens to invest in the war. This had as a result what is known as "the War Bond Drive". People bought the bonds because they found both the singer, and by extension, the song, comforting and maternal.

Besides, Irving Berlin had all of the proceeds from performances of the song donated to the Boy Scouts of America.
The fact that the Kate Smith version was used in the War Bond Drive was icing on the cake.
