@ZyberAndroid if your inking comes out pixelated your DPI is too low. Go to your IMAGE menu -> IMAGE SIZE -> and at the RESOLUTION box change it to 150, 200, 300, or 600 DPI
The higher the Resolution (DPI) the finer the pixels.

@BouncekDeLemos is your Inking layer selected and visible? if so it shouldn't be greyed out. if not make sure you have your inking layer visible and selected.
@hwms001 If you want to make a selection and fill it in you could. But that's an extra step to do, I just generally fill it in making sure I have the color I wan't as the foreground.
@ATownLikeMusic This tutorial no I didn't use a graphics tablet. But I do use a tablet. My first one was a Gaphire 3. My second one and most favorite is the Cintiq 12wx.

@LAN2010a Tablet is a device that allows you draw like you would on paper. the Wacom site has some products if you do a search on "Wacom Tablets". I own a Graphire 3 which is now the Bamboo series and a Cintiq 12w.
@TheCuteprincess4ever your color is light or you're filling the path on the wrong layer. If you're not filling the path on the wrong layer move the layer you are using to fill the path to the top of the layer list. This should fix it.
@pigofthehouse If you hold down your click button when your get a point and then drag slightly to the left or right depending on which way you are going with the curve you will get the anchor handles.
If you make a straight line from point a to point b say the end of the each eye curve and you click in the middle of that line and drag a little you get a point and anchor handle. Then click ctrl and click on the new anchor handle and drag it to it position to make a curve.
@Lizzardman666 The old sketch layers would be deleted after you've finished inking. The white layer is like say a background reference. This can be changed to any color you wish for the coloring method. Hi, once i have created a shape using the pen tool, when i right click inside it the fill and stroke options are grayed out and cannot be selected. What am i doing wrong?!
@jabbason make sure your current layer you want to use to be the ink layer is selected in the layers window. As well make sure that the layer is not INVISIBLE. This means that there has to be an Eye icon in the box. If there is no Eye icon in the click on the box and it will be turned on and then try right clicking to fill or stroke.
Im new to photoshop and one thing i notice on the cs4 is that if i zoom in a little my picture becomes very pixelated its not that bad on yours what do you do?
@Forrest569 My image is at 300 - 600 DPI. This can be changed in the image sizing option under Resolution. if you set it to 200 and up it will not give you a pixelated effect.
If your using Photoshop to make inking, why not just use Illustrator? basically the same thing. You may not be able to paint it but thats what photoshop is for. Other than that, seen it done that.
because some people don't want to use illustrator. I use Photoshop for many different things besides painting. Inking is one of other things I use Photoshop for.
All you need to do is create a new layer and name it white. Click on the bucket tool and click anywhere on the image (with the "white") layer selected. Then make sure that your rough drawing is over the "white" layer and bring it's opacity down. This will gray it out a little bit.
I've searched for and seen hundreds of digital inking tutorials but none have ever really "dong'ed" on me 'til this one. Thank you for making this, it makes perfect sense now! Makes me wonder why everyone else explains it in such a complicated way...
hey...stupid question i guess..but what do i have to do after im finished with the inking? ..so..what do i have to do with the other layers so i can save it as a normal jpeg file?
turn the other layers off except the white layer. you can do this by clicking on the eye icon. Then merge the visible layers. Then "SAVE AS" and choose in the drop down "JPEG file" and then save it as you would. It would then be a normal JPEG file. No layers at all.
u can a;ways save it as jpeg just go to File > Save As a and choose jpeg. Keep the original psd just in case you want to edit something. Also right click on layer to FLATTEN them all into one but do it if you know why u need it and even then keep the original psd file with all layers.
I've noticed that when you do your penning, you work with the anchors as you go rather than creating anchor points on the path and then adjusting them later. I want to learn your method, but when I do it as I go, I try dragging foremost anchors and they dont curve like I want them to- they make funky shapes. What do I do? Thanks.
when you make another point for your curves you click and hold and drag until the curves you have are to your liking. The only thing that's annoying about this method is that it make even curves on both sides so if you have a curve that's wider on one side than the other then you'll have to adjust. It's really just adjusting everything if it doesn't come out the way you want it the first time.
Hi! I just wanted to ask what Photoshop it is. I have Photoshop CS4 and I'm much more interested in learning how to ink than anything else! Great job by the way! :) I've watched the viedo for at least four times now. :)
Thanks a lot! I also wanted to ask if you have an tips and techniques on how to create curves in inking. I find it really hard on that part :P. Thanks again! : )
usually if you want to make a curve you click and hold then drag til you see anchors. Then release. Then click on the wieghts and you can adjust the curves.
the thing about inking by hand is that if you mess, up you are, for the lack of a better word, FUCKED... BUT in PS you can erase anything... Oh yeah, and it's cleaner and you don't get ink on your hands :D
Many times I have done nice inkings by hand. Just lately since I use the computer alot my hand has been shaky so I don't trust myself so much these days inking by hand. And it is true when you get an image you like done inked and screw up you are fucked cause you either use White Out to fix it and then fuck it up some more or you toss it away. With technology these days if you do screw up scan it put it in Photoshop and then fix it there.
fact is , if you "screw up an inking " you don't have to toss it away. Many ways of quickly correcting mistakes... one is being skilled enough not to make mistakes in the 1st place. Artist have managed to produce inked drawings hundreds of years before photoshop was ever invented.
You seriously talk down to me as if I don't study art and art history. Learn to spell "PHOENIX" right. Just because you are "bragging" about where you work and how long you work at Marvel DC etc, doesn't make you top shit among the art world. I have more respect for artists that HELP other people out than talk down to people. You think this tut is a joke don't look at it. Don't comment on it. Stop being a troll.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
phoenix,
I think many times these 'tuts' are just ego trips for dillittantes. Many time they can me more hurtful than helpful.
My comments also designed to be helpful to artists by giving real world advice. 4 hours to "ink" this drawing may be fine for the amature and hobbyists but would never stand up to the demands of the 'real' commercial art world.
How about I take down my youtube video altogether to feed your ego trip?
I put this up for the sheer fact that when people ask me how I do stuff I send them here cause explaining to many people takes forever. But you know... You say this is good for hobbyist yet you talk down about it. I didn't put this up here for the convinence to get noticed by "commercial" jobs. I put it up for those that want it and you still seem to talk down to me like I do not know anything about the commercial art world
Don't get me wrong, I truly appreciate these tuts that people put up on Youtube. I have actually learned quite a bit from them. All I'm trying to do...or say with my smart ass remarks... is bring a bit of Old School real world experience to the situation.
It is by no means an ego trip for me-you will notice, you have no idea who I actually am...right? It's more like just trying to contribute.
I do apologize if I come off like an asshole.I can be quite the asshole sometimes.
As someone with multiple hobbies that get criticized because an individual disagrees with what I do, I feel that people should only criticize someone's methods if it's asked for.
I don't recall anywhere that she says she wants to be a commercial artist. I know she sells commissions, I've ordered from her before, and it's because I like her art style. I try not to rush her on it, because I know it's a hobby.
That said, you can't be anyone too important if you don't publicize your name. ;)
Second off, you do think you're important because you think what you say is how all people should do things, else you wouldn't have argued so long against how someone does a hobby.
As far as I can tell, you're mostly trolling for your own ego. Why don't you post your own art videos? I'm about 90% sure that would be a lot more fitting to help show technique than insisting that someone does something how you want it to be done.
I just wanted to say that I used the tutorial "Photoshop DIgital Ink in 5 mins," also by phoenixcrash. It took me about 10 minutes, pausing and flipping between windows. It turned out great.
I just put this up to fill a void and for those that want to expand their own skills. THEY DON'T have to take this like a grain of salt. This was merely put up for my friends and those that kept asking me that wanted to do some digital inking in Photoshop.
... oh yeah, I guess you fix your mistakes with photoshop too. My biggest problem right now is making inks that are "smooth" if you will, and by that I don't mean that my inks are shaky, I mean that they are too monotous with the same thickness all around.
Mircron pens I've seen alot of artists use for inking. Very good ink just gotta becareful and let the ink dry if you're the type of person that lets their hand stay on the paper so it don't smudge. Faber Castell inking pens are also good and both brands have different sizes of point so you can have a variety of line sizes.
this is awesome! i can finaly ink stuff. One thing though(anyone answer me), when I ink, its not as dark as in the video. its pixel-ish and has bits of grey and white. is there something i can change so this doesnt happen??
I know what you mean, there's nothing like purely hand-made art. But PS is a completely different medium. Kind of like the difference between brush painting and spray painting.
There are easier ways of inking in Photoshop. Most comic companies these days use digital inking and coloring. 35 a day would push it, but spread it out over a few days and use a better Ps technique and there you go.
Even though I see it selected in your video, you fail to mention in your captions (exclude overlapping path areas) must be selected. For beginners, this might be something they may overlook and find they don't know why it won't fill inside the path.
Indeed. This was my first video tutorial so I'm sure there are stuff that I have missed. Thank you for pointing that out as well. I may annotate that in sometime in the future.
I do have a pen tablet. Some people don't. Therefore this tutorial is for those that want to have crisp clean lines that doesn't have a tablet but a mouse.
And on a side note, I use my pen tablet to color my images than to ink.
no offense but you have a weird way to draw and color digital art. you're the first person that i know who uses the mouse to ink instead of using the tablet o.O
In art there's no such things as "weird." People just have different ways to get their works done. I have done inking with the tablet, but with the current tablet I have and the wrist problems it's difficult to do inking for me. Not everyone can afford $1000 cintiq tablet so they deal with the next best thing.
as much as you love to believe that "wrist problems" means they can't draw. That image was done on paper by hand with pencil, but I'm sooo sure you can do better. Troll someplace else.
all of that is ok. it works for abought six paths and then flips around. i dont think i clicked anything i wasnt ment to. can you think what might be going wrong? thanx
the path is definitely closed, i have done it a hundred times over now. it worked at first but then everything other tham my path whent black. any idea? thanx
Thank you so much ❤ I've just been drawing with the brush tool over my lines and they've never turned out right - hopefully now I'll be able to make my entrance onto the art scene properly!

I must give props to you poster of this vid. this will be useful as a tutorial on helping me to ink in PS
mechaart 2 years ago
I've searched for and seen hundreds of digital inking tutorials but none have ever really "dong'ed" on me 'til this one. Thank you for making this, it makes perfect sense now! Makes me wonder why everyone else explains it in such a complicated way...

Good tutorial ^_^
But I have photoshop 7 and I can't find the inking tool anywhere, help plz?
Smileyo1234 2 years ago
inking tool is the pen tool.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
if you press P it should change your brush to a pen.

Thank you ^^

phoenixcrash 2 years ago
hey...stupid question i guess..but what do i have to do after im finished with the inking? ..so..what do i have to do with the other layers so i can save it as a normal jpeg file?
XxlnFlaMeSxX 2 years ago
turn the other layers off except the white layer. you can do this by clicking on the eye icon. Then merge the visible layers. Then "SAVE AS" and choose in the drop down "JPEG file" and then save it as you would. It would then be a normal JPEG file. No layers at all.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
excuse just wondering. what version of photoshop did u use?
MARKYMOCKMAN 2 years ago
this is CS2 I believe.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
u can a;ways save it as jpeg just go to File > Save As a and choose jpeg. Keep the original psd just in case you want to edit something. Also right click on layer to FLATTEN them all into one but do it if you know why u need it and even then keep the original psd file with all layers.

dam no matter where i look i cant find a faster/accurate way of inking my drawings, very nice tutorial.
Lrak1193 2 years ago 2
What was the paint brush and size u used when used
stroked the path with the pen tool.
TMNTsisterturtle152 2 years ago
usually 10 but this is when my picture is at 600 dpi. Just experiment with it and find the right size brush for your image.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
Nice tutorial!
I do have one question.
I've noticed that when you do your penning, you work with the anchors as you go rather than creating anchor points on the path and then adjusting them later. I want to learn your method, but when I do it as I go, I try dragging foremost anchors and they dont curve like I want them to- they make funky shapes. What do I do? Thanks.
-Jay
theshizirl 2 years ago
when you make another point for your curves you click and hold and drag until the curves you have are to your liking. The only thing that's annoying about this method is that it make even curves on both sides so if you have a curve that's wider on one side than the other then you'll have to adjust. It's really just adjusting everything if it doesn't come out the way you want it the first time.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
Hi! I just wanted to ask what Photoshop it is. I have Photoshop CS4 and I'm much more interested in learning how to ink than anything else! Great job by the way! :) I've watched the viedo for at least four times now. :)

in this tutorial it's CS3 I believe.

Thanks a lot! I also wanted to ask if you have an tips and techniques on how to create curves in inking. I find it really hard on that part :P. Thanks again! : )
fingirl12 2 years ago
usually if you want to make a curve you click and hold then drag til you see anchors. Then release. Then click on the wieghts and you can adjust the curves.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
hmm, then i should thank god for the ability to draw on paper but not on computer >.>

the thing about inking by hand is that if you mess, up you are, for the lack of a better word, FUCKED... BUT in PS you can erase anything... Oh yeah, and it's cleaner and you don't get ink on your hands :D
LONGSHOTfilmes 2 years ago
Many times I have done nice inkings by hand. Just lately since I use the computer alot my hand has been shaky so I don't trust myself so much these days inking by hand. And it is true when you get an image you like done inked and screw up you are fucked cause you either use White Out to fix it and then fuck it up some more or you toss it away. With technology these days if you do screw up scan it put it in Photoshop and then fix it there.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
phoonix,
fact is , if you "screw up an inking " you don't have to toss it away. Many ways of quickly correcting mistakes... one is being skilled enough not to make mistakes in the 1st place. Artist have managed to produce inked drawings hundreds of years before photoshop was ever invented.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
You seriously talk down to me as if I don't study art and art history. Learn to spell "PHOENIX" right. Just because you are "bragging" about where you work and how long you work at Marvel DC etc, doesn't make you top shit among the art world. I have more respect for artists that HELP other people out than talk down to people. You think this tut is a joke don't look at it. Don't comment on it. Stop being a troll.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
phoenix,
I think many times these 'tuts' are just ego trips for dillittantes. Many time they can me more hurtful than helpful.
My comments also designed to be helpful to artists by giving real world advice. 4 hours to "ink" this drawing may be fine for the amature and hobbyists but would never stand up to the demands of the 'real' commercial art world.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
How about I take down my youtube video altogether to feed your ego trip?
I put this up for the sheer fact that when people ask me how I do stuff I send them here cause explaining to many people takes forever. But you know... You say this is good for hobbyist yet you talk down about it. I didn't put this up here for the convinence to get noticed by "commercial" jobs. I put it up for those that want it and you still seem to talk down to me like I do not know anything about the commercial art world
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
phoenix,
Don't get me wrong, I truly appreciate these tuts that people put up on Youtube.
Peace:)
FredFoothand 2 years ago
As someone with multiple hobbies that get criticized because an individual disagrees with what I do, I feel that people should only criticize someone's methods if it's asked for.
I don't recall anywhere that she says she wants to be a commercial artist. I know she sells commissions, I've ordered from her before, and it's because I like her art style. I try not to rush her on it, because I know it's a hobby.
That said, you can't be anyone too important if you don't publicize your name. ;)
Kilea 2 years ago
Kilup,
I could care less about whether or not anyone thinks I'm important.
I also dont care what you think people should and should not be criticized for.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
First off, spell my name right.
Kilea 2 years ago
FrdFdthnd,
I just wanted to say that I used the tutorial "Photoshop DIgital Ink in 5 mins," also by phoenixcrash. It took me about 10 minutes, pausing and flipping between windows. It turned out great.
Zormo777 2 years ago
I just put this up to fill a void and for those that want to expand their own skills. THEY DON'T have to take this like a grain of salt. This was merely put up for my friends and those that kept asking me that wanted to do some digital inking in Photoshop.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
... oh yeah, I guess you fix your mistakes with photoshop too. My biggest problem right now is making inks that are "smooth" if you will, and by that I don't mean that my inks are shaky, I mean that they are too monotous with the same thickness all around.
LONGSHOTfilmes 2 years ago
so what kind of ink pen should I get? I think I might like inking better on paper than on the PC. Could I find one at Staples or something like that?
LONGSHOTfilmes 2 years ago
Mircron pens I've seen alot of artists use for inking. Very good ink just gotta becareful and let the ink dry if you're the type of person that lets their hand stay on the paper so it don't smudge. Faber Castell inking pens are also good and both brands have different sizes of point so you can have a variety of line sizes.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
yeah, haha, my hand is always on the paper. thanks for the info.
LONGSHOTfilmes 2 years ago
this is awesome! i can finaly ink stuff. One thing though(anyone answer me), when I ink, its not as dark as in the video. its pixel-ish and has bits of grey and white. is there something i can change so this doesnt happen??
Damac95 2 years ago
hey...here's an idea...why not just INK IT?
Should Take you about 45 minutes.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
I know what you mean, there's nothing like purely hand-made art. But PS is a completely different medium. Kind of like the difference between brush painting and spray painting.
Zormo777 2 years ago
Zorm,
Draw, Ink, Color 35 of these (with backgrounds)within 24 hour period and get paid big bucks for it... you'll know how ridiculous this video is.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
There are easier ways of inking in Photoshop. Most comic companies these days use digital inking and coloring. 35 a day would push it, but spread it out over a few days and use a better Ps technique and there you go.
Zormo777 2 years ago
Zorm,
You are talking to a guy who has been creating art work for Marvel & D.C. and Madison Ave. Ad agencies for 25 years.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
Even though I see it selected in your video, you fail to mention in your captions (exclude overlapping path areas) must be selected. For beginners, this might be something they may overlook and find they don't know why it won't fill inside the path.
Seebr115 2 years ago
Indeed. This was my first video tutorial so I'm sure there are stuff that I have missed. Thank you for pointing that out as well. I may annotate that in sometime in the future.

perhaps you should get a pen tablet which will allow you to do what you just did, with your hands. but nice vid but that would take forever.
SpectralViral 2 years ago
I do have a pen tablet. Some people don't. Therefore this tutorial is for those that want to have crisp clean lines that doesn't have a tablet but a mouse.
And on a side note, I use my pen tablet to color my images than to ink.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
no offense but you have a weird way to draw and color digital art. you're the first person that i know who uses the mouse to ink instead of using the tablet o.O
Legified 2 years ago
In art there's no such things as "weird." People just have different ways to get their works done. I have done inking with the tablet, but with the current tablet I have and the wrist problems it's difficult to do inking for me. Not everyone can afford $1000 cintiq tablet so they deal with the next best thing.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
lmao, i stand corrected. but i didnt know you had wrist problems so im sorry if youre offended. im saving up for a $100 tablet :O
Legified 2 years ago
yes ...many people have "wrist problems"...it's called "they can't draw"
FredFoothand 2 years ago
as much as you love to believe that "wrist problems" means they can't draw. That image was done on paper by hand with pencil, but I'm sooo sure you can do better. Troll someplace else.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
phoonix,
Yes.. of course I can do much better.
FredFoothand 2 years ago
also there are people (i talk about me yes) who are really bad at drawing over with ink after having drawn it again so this helps us (me) alot :P

i just sorted it out. some setting in the upper right kept going on and off for some reason. thanx for your help
spagboll616 2 years ago
all of that is ok. it works for abought six paths and then flips around. i dont think i clicked anything i wasnt ment to. can you think what might be going wrong? thanx
spagboll616 2 years ago
perhaps you forget to delete your old paths before you make a new one?
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
the path is definitely closed, i have done it a hundred times over now. it worked at first but then everything other tham my path whent black. any idea? thanx
spagboll616 2 years ago
Make sure the pen tool settings are set to the following. At 1:43 shows the bar of the pen tool setting.
Path is selected.
Pen tool is selected (Not Freeform)
Auto add/delete is checked.
Exclude overlapping path areas.
if this doesn't fix it then let me know.
phoenixcrash 2 years ago
everythin but my path is going black. do you know why that is? thanx

you didn't close the path.

my images are at 600 DPI so the line are much smoother. Most people will have their image at 300 DPI.
