You can buy foam sheets in the camping sections of most stores for very cheap. its 1/2 to 1 inch thick, and can be cut into sheets to fit any cheapo toolbox you have. just cut holes into several sheets and layer them on top of each other. to whatever depth you want, then place an uncut sheet on top for top protection. The sheets wont move if you cut them to the box size, and you can take out layers and replace them with different size holes for tons of custom shapes.
@gluebubble To clarify on my last comment, the foam is sold as a mattress for sleeping bags. you get a big roll of it for something like 6 to 10 dollars.
At 6:10, the Sabol foam is designed to go with their Army Transport Cases. These are what I use and I have three of varying sizes, Battlefoam is another brand although their prices are a bit higher. I also use a few of those tackle boxes for bitz.
Hey Devstro.... I carry my Thousand Sons Warhammer 40k Army Around inside a clear plastic Rubbermaid container with latches on it. with my infantry models in cardboard style egg cartons. Each man fits nicely inside one egg space in a 12 egg carton. I cut off the extra three spaces my 9 (go tzeentch) men wouldnt need so two would fit together into an 18 space. My Terminators are inside cut up paper towel rolls stapled together, and my other vehicles etc etc go in the middle of it all. semi loose
for £60.99 at my local gw store you can get a massive bag wich they fit in niceley and it has space for everything i dont own one yet but it has lots of layers for your small infantry units and then some for vhiecles then you got some left for your giant monstrous things and some pockets inside for books and a big one designed for the current manuel
With the prevalence of plastic boxes and movement trays, you can use plastic boxes and construct racks for the trays in the bottom. Racks are wooden frames screwed to the sides (the trays stack vertically) or sitting side by side so the frame can be pulled out for access. In the top tool tray, you can put skirmishers or just tools of the trade (dice, ruler, templates). With both methods, you wouldn't want to ship the mini's, but for routine storage and transport, it is quite good.
I've been playing miniature games for 20 years and got into the habit of using metal toolboxes. I magnetize all bases and this keeps the mini's fairly stable. You do give up protection as they can move around in there, but you can stack an entire army in one box. If you get some of the deep drawer kind, you can put cavalry and monsters in them. Most of my infantry is now in the box on their trays, which makes it convenient for setup and take down.
i like your reveiws your a good explainer, im from england i collect 40k figures not much of a player more of a painter got space marines painted in blood ravern chapter from dawn of war, also got orks, keep up the good reveiws
Hey Devstro, I think you have a good theory, I would probally pick Inexpensive and Protection. That would be my tool box and GW case. I tryed designing some trays on battlefoam, and in september I will be getting my first P.A.C.K. 720 case from Battlefoam. Thanks for the tips I think I'll be going to fabricland more often! Okay Check ya later.
the one you showed at 5:00 is the one i use.. and the case they came in.. the sabel foam fits in the same slot very well...try it tell me what you think
i got the first case coverd with ma orks but i thought any idea what i can get ma killa kans battlewagon squigloth and 4 trukks and my wartracks in i want to pack it in my backpack
Well, personally what I do for my storage, for each army (in may case two, fantasy lizardmen and lord of the rings dwarves) Get a tup a ware box, throw in a base of foam penuts, carefully put in your models, and an other layer of foam penuts, it works ALMOST PERFECTLY and it is by far teh cheapest method. ANd wehn you shake it, NO noise at all, so they can't be rattling around, only thing is, if you're wanting to set iup a battle quickly, well, it can be pretty messy. That's just what I do.
Do you know the name for the foam you use? I live in the UK, and "egg crate foam" apparently isn't an instantly recognisable description.. Having looked in all hobby/DIY stores in my town I have found no foam like it, so I think I may need to order form the US... so yea, do you know the name or a link to a US site with it?
I use the K R Multi Case tm cost me £21:99 for hard Card, or £38:99 for aluminium, they do dozens of inner in different sizes and 'pick and pluck' I use 2 GW cases and 2 Camera Cases with 'Pick and Pluck'.
what do you think is the best way to fit tyranid figures. only the infantry would be able to fit in the plano fishing boxes. what should i do with the trygon, carnifexs, and the gargoyles that don't fit in that?
I use a 10 dollar tool box from walmart...the bottom holds my tanks, bag of dice, templates...whatever else and it comes with a top tray that my foot guys go in...I use something like styrafoam but its in a thin, flexible sheet that you get in packages to protect the stuff
I originally got it at Wal-Mart, but they have since stopped carrying them. SO now I get them from Amazon. They are the "Plano 1404." Do a search and they should come up. They sell for 14.99, and they ship free if you buy at least 2 (or 10$ more worth of stuff).
That's what I do and it works really well. You can buy the perfect size for your army or get one with room to expand. Also if it has a couple of large drawers you can fit in large vehicles or monsters. The magnet strip you can buy at a local craft store and it is fairly strong and will keep figures from moving as long as you don't drop it or kick it over.
maybe at a games workshop or at the website of gamesworkshop, dont you know what the games workshop is?(the company that makes warhammer fantasy/40k and lord/war of the ring)
Nice video man, you're triangle theory is very true.
I bought a second handed samsonite for 2,50 Euro's and cut three layers of donated egg foam with a plain foam sheet on top and my 2600pts of orcs fit in nicely.
hey devstro! its me again, ill be getting my first army on monday im either getting skull pass or a battalion. thanks for the advice-
ps i fashioned a sweet shoebox figure case using cardboard and fashioning cardbord into small checkerboard like segments then i used washcloth pieces to pus on the top and bottom. hope i t works when i get my set...
I use a few different cases, i have 2 of the normal sized gw cases, one of the "army" double wide cases, and one of the GW "vehicle" cases that has red latches. I also use one of the normal sabol army cases and a sabol motor pool case. In addition I use 2 of those plano pistol cases for random huge things, but when I bought mine they didnt have the perforated foam. In the past I've used tackle boxes, and ammo boxes with cut out foam inserts shoved inside.
No, it is actually a newer case. Last year was the 25th anniversary of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, so they made some cases to commemorate the occassion.
I have a SS Designs case (it's like a Sabol case but more cost effective) I also have a Reaper miniatures case (like the Sabol case as well) and a few $20 aluminum pistol cases (That I bought from Menards hardware store) they vary in protection and price. I'm considering a Battlefoam case but I'll have to save for one.
I have a HUGE transport problem now a days, my 2000pt O&G army is over 100 minis and the only cases I can find can transport at best 20-30 and are kind of bulky :S
I have the Chessex model you show that you weren't happy with. It is really made for RPG miniature that are a smaller scale than GW minis. It works great for those.
Devstro, try getting the Sabol carrying bags if you only have the foam. They would be too hard to carry around as is.
I have their smallest option and it is able to carry 2 3" trays and I think 4 or 5 of the 1" trays. I can basically carry around 2500 points of my Blood Angels in one case, including vehicles.
A cheaper option would be to find a plastic container that could fit one ore two in the bottom and just stack them up.
Ahh theres nothing like improvised model transport, my friend seriously blew me away a while ago, we played orcs against my lizardmen, he transported his snotling pump wagon in a old carbord easter egg wraped in three socks.
I would have to say that Sabol's Army Transport are actually better. They are a little bit more expensive, but carry a lot more models and are fully customizable.
It comes down to personal preference, but I always thought that GW's cases were a rip-off compared to some of the other foam options out there.
I have a GREAT tip for anyone out there looking for an inexpensive and really good protection solution, and it can vary in bulkiness.
You can buy those foam blocks with removable tabs from a lot of places rather cheaply, hobby stores packing stores etc but when it comes already fit in a box, it shoots up in price. What you can do is buy the foam blocks, and buy a builders toolbox, whichever size you want and however deep you want, and fit your blocks in there PLUS some small storage in the lid!
Another place you can get the foam blocks from is photography stores. Often they sell VERY over priced camera storage boxes but they will also carry spare diced foam sheets/blocks for these cases which are only a couple of £s each. :)
