I am not saying that this defends the actions of the whalers or anything, but there is actual, legitimate research being carried out as well as the killing of whales (which seems to be unnecessary for the research).

Could Paul and his "crew" do more good by helping map whale migration routes? YES!!! (MOST whales are killed by humans on shipping routes. Recent changes dropped whale accidental whale deaths by 30%. Paul "claims" a 5% reduction. Which one's better?)
