  • i went on the nemo ride once and had high hopes cuz i had been on the original sub as a kid...i have never been on it again. the nemo ride is a waste

  • Even though I've never been on the original, I can imagine that it must've been pretty fun to ride. The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage can be fun, if you're part of the new generation of kids who are more familiar with the newer Disney movies and the Pixar movies.

  • I kope they have this in tokto disneyland, like how they still have the original haunted mansion

  • That sea serpent towards the end has eyes that would make actor Elijah Wood blush!

  • I had been to this submarine when travelling to LA disneyland.

I hope there will be one in Hong Kong Disneyland.

  • God, how awesome this ride would have been if they had just updated this with modern knowledge of the ocean floor. Geothermal vents with giant tubeworm colonies as thick as forests. Cold seeps that resemble underwater lake shores. A blue whale fighting a giant squid using the Nemo underwater projection technology.

  • that mermaid scared the crap out of me. idk why

  • Great Video!! What is that dome on the right at 6:38?

  • Ah memories!!!!

  • MERMAIDS ♥ !

  • @tdifan12346 You could really only see one of them. Best shot is about 2:40. Quality of video cameras to record in dark light/shadow w/o a spotlight was minimal in '98.

  • i didnt remember the sea serpent being so goofy looking :D ....so cool that the whole ride was "under" real water

  • We will never forget this incredible attraction.

    1959-1998

  • Nemo is okay, but I WANT MY MERMAIDS. *sob* :(

  • Thank you for this! I love it! Brings back so many good memories of Disneyland.

  • That giant squid and sea monster scared me so much as a child. I remember them having glowing eyes. I think this is what started my clausterphobia. When he said sea serpent i froze..like when i was a child..Now that i saw it I laughed. It's like i faced my fear. I think if i was underwater next to that thing i think i would freak out though hahahahaha.

  • @EDC7 because it was crusty and old. I miss it.

  • 2:54 lower right corner, is that a mermaid that fell off of her support? She looks dead! :(

  • @XWarumono If it was still up i'd see it in person. Probably makes more sence in person.

  • @jfachris I wish it were still around. The last time I went on this ride was 17 years ago. I vividly remember the mermaids, I just don't remember exactly how they were all posed. I like Pineapplewhipaddict is right, she's probably intentionally angled that way - it just looked so odd!

  • @XWarumono no the mermaid is angled downward like she is diving to pick something up...I think out of a treasure chest.

  • @pineapplewhipaddict Yeah. The mermaids were playing with the treasure. I remember that much about their part.

  • As long as I can remember I have loved mermaids, and as a child my favorite thing was to go to Disneyland and ride all of the rides that contained mermaids...Peter Pans Flight, Small World, and the best...The Submarine Voyage. I am so sad that they have changed this and that the mermaids are no longer part of it. I wish I could have bought one of the mermaids from this ride.

  • I miss this ride. It used to be my favorite at the park. Video of Nemo projected at me is not the same, imo.

  • I liked that ride much better than the new one. Nemo is cute, but the ocean isn't really supposed to be seen that way. R.I.P. Submarine Voyage. You are missed.

  • my favorite part was the giant squid

  • "great scott!, your right"- captn. kirk?

  • that mermaid is hot

  • 1:55 is when that hideous-looking giant squid makes the scene!

I gotta say, in that huge and really dark area, that big red mollusk really did stick out like a sore thumb!

  • thanks for posting. brings back the memories!! i find the ship graveyard, mermaids and polar ice caps more gripping than the finding nemo overlay!!

  • CROSS-EYED SEA SERPENT FTW!!!!! :D

  • he said tales of them crushing ships not that they didn't exist.

  • Check out 4:29. Ahhhhhhhhhh! lol

  • hey what you know its Ariel in a bad mood? he he

  • That sea serpent is so cool!

  • its cool to see how different the ride is now, and how much technology has improved some of its aspects.

  • The best parts of this ride is when the subs pass under the waterfall, and go right to the graveyard of lost ships, the polar ice cap, the abyss, the mermaids and Atlantis, an underwater volcano and a goofy sea serpent. My favorite part is seeing the giant squid in the abyss scene. In the new sub ride today, there is one thing that is still there. Right when the subs leave the underwater current scene, the first ship you see in the graveyard of ships, is from the original attraction.

  • This ride was way better than what it is today. Uncle Walt told us to plus it, but god dammit they're plussing it all wrong! Bring back the old subs!

  • @PlutoEmmaloo how did they plus it wrong?

  • R.I.P. Submarine Voyage. Best voyage I ever took.

  • omg a sea serpant

Why"d they get rid of the live mermaids?

  • Three reasons Jar0fdrt

they had Health problems from the submarines' exaust fumes and high chlorinated water, and (If memory serves correct) Men tried swimming over to them

  • wow thanx for the info!

  • Live mermaids??? when? I thought it was always the scary, possessed dolls, hehe.

  • When it first opened they had real girls in mermaid tails on occasion waving at the people around them and swimming in the fake reefs.

  • This ride has made me hate the cute lovable nemo! The ride would be so much better if the reopened as this again

  • where are the mermaids???

  • In this video you mean? They're there...at 2:44... they look kinda dead to me though. They don't look like they were swimming anymore at this point, which is sad. You can see the strings on the "swimming" one's head lol!!! I miss this ride, too, but am grateful to at least go on SOME form of it again. My children will love it, so I'm not going to be selfish even if I DO want my mermaids and sea serpent back! ;)

  • Having said that - I must say that the person who taped this did a GREAT job... the fact that you can TELL that the mermaids are worn out and can SEE strings proves the awesome quality of the vid.

  • thanks for posting the time of the mermaids...somehow i missed it. i agree about loving the worn out quality. you can still see it in the enchanted tiki room. some of the robots have one eye that won't move. but it's my favorite attraction next to small world. i wonder what that will look like when they are through with the renovation.

when i was five (1978) the mermaids looked so real to me. it's all i remember about the whole experience! that and the treasure.

  • We're not too far apart in age... those are what I remember most clearly as well. It still seems like the serpent was much closer to my porthole though. Maybe he scared me so much that it SEEMED closer, lol!!! I remember shaking for a few minutes after my first ride. :D

  • Okay, since we have similar memories can you tell me if you remember a Bonanza-style shooting game at DL around 1978? I have this crazy, vague memory of these carnival-type cowboy-themed gun shooting games near the exit. Did I dream this?

  • i wasnt around in 1978 lol but i read somewhere that they did have something like it, if not exactly.

  • Oh ya, the thing at the end that read 1959-1998, was kind of sad, like someone actually died. I shed a tear.

  • 1959-1998 you mean the original when it closed so sad.good thing it returned with a nemo theme.i only been on the original version when i was 6 in 1997 i went i came back and it closed 1 year later.

  • When or if I become an Imagineer I am going to remake this ride at Animal Kingdom and place it in Dinoland U.S.A. and make the subs time vessels that travel thru time and take guests to the fantastic prehistoric underwater worlds, and face off with giant crocodiles a plesiosaurus, and of course the sea serpent.

  • That would be even better than this one! I miss this ride soo much. I sadly was on it one of the last time it was going. It got flooded :(

  • cool!if i were a butler at the haunted mansion i would be infamous just like maynard.

  • @MANEATINGWREATH

I know this post I'm relying to is ancient, but dude, if you ever do become an Imagineer, please bring back "Adventure Thru Inner Space". But update it so that it also mentions quarks and neutrinos. And put in a good word for Ian McKellan as the new narrator.

  • I love the creapy music at 1:05

  • its not creepy music its the "radar"

  • sweet i want to be an imagineer to

  • que chafa

  • i agree the sea serpent and mermaids made the ride!

  • I like how a 6-minute video brings back YEARS of memories!

  • So True....

  • Totally agree with you...

  • lol.....sea serpent!

Thanks for posting this! I remember this ride from when I lived in Anaheim as a kid and went there like every other weekend with my aunt (my uncle who is married to her was a carpenter at Disneyland for 20+ years). I hope to one day become an imagineer at Disneyland to make rides like this! Thanks again for posting this ParkHopper!

  • How come none of the marine life is actually real?

Maybe it will be wen i go on Finding Nemo.

    DISNEY IN 8 DAYS!!!! :-D

  • i wish i could have went on this

  • The serpent was the best part of the ride <3

  • It rocks! It's got that old Submarine Voyage charm with a new technological twist! Also, if you really enjoyed the original SV, the ride makes little allusions to it. (re-used lines, sea serpent & mermaid sculpture, giant sea bass etc...)

  • I can't wait to go on it someday (although I may HAVE to wait from what I'm reading... 2 hour lines lol). I think everyone should give DL credit for bringing anything back in sub ride form. Some people are way too picky!

  • man that was the first ride i went on at disneyland i love that ride

  • Oh, wow, it's all coming back to me: the ruins in the volcano and the sea sepent...

  • this ride scared the crap out of me as kid.. but I'm glad its coming back.

  • Thanks for the flashback! I was 11 when I first rode this in the 80's...and yeah I fell for it hook, line, and sinker! I went back for a honeymoon in June, 1998 and didn't go on it...because it was stopped with people trapped for HOURS! They had to have gotten some nice compensation packages - I would have asked for VIP passes for life! :-)

  • i think that the red light is just the light on the camera being reflected off the window

  • Sad how much effort it takes to actually impress people these days. If you aren't impressed by this attraction I don't think anything will. For an attraction that was not being taken care of and was built in 1959 it was by far one of the best at Disneyland for lasting so long.

  • I agree, all the new rides that come out try to be so slick to satisfy the short attention span of the kids today. Disneyland had so much more heart back then. The begin of the downfall was when they replaced Adventures thru Innerspace with Star Tours.

  • What song is used at the beginning and end of this film ?

  • The theme from Disney's 20,000 Legues Under the Sea, a 1955 film version of Jules Verne's novel staring Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorie (sp?).

  • @ParkHopper His last name was actually spelled Lore. "- ) The song is actually on the Sing A Long Songs Videos. God save me considering all the times I've watched it w/ my daughter when she was little but I cannot remember the title! "- (

  • Great vid, thanks for uploading. If I remember correctly, when I took the ride as a kid, one of the giant squid attacked our sub. Did they remove that part? Or maybe I'm wrong and just confusing with a different memory.

  • That's from the Disney World version.

  • since when is there one in d-world?

  • there used to be one of these in WDW but they closed it in both parks and the one in cali became the finding nemo one and the other in orlando was cemented over to make a playground =(

  • ouch, id rather have nemo than a playground. i didnt know that

  • Disneyland was a much different place in the '50s. Originally, most of the attractions were live actors having cowboy/indian battles, or pirates taking over the ship. It was more emphesized on experiencing what life was like in different places and eras. Now it's obviously centered on rides and thrills. It was more about imagination. With this gone, the last real original attraction like it is the Dinosaur exhibit on the train between Tomorrowland and the front entrance.

  • Hey park hopper this seems too long for the lagoon does it run under all of Dland or what? That and what was that red light?

  • The subs went through the waterfalls that went into caves, and there was a path they went through underground. The red light, I don't know what that is either.

  • From personal experience, and it being and old video, it may have been the video camera itself. Ya know, the red lights that means 'recording'?

  • Because it cost too much money and leaked. The ride system was not removed because it is going to be the finding nemo submarine voyage

  • Sorry, I don't understand the question.

  • @ParkHopper what dont you understand about that?? they wanna know why the did away with the ride

  • @ParkHopper Obviously they want to know why the ride is gone...

But to answer their question, it's not really gone. It was just changed to a Finding Nemo themed ride.

  • Those mermaids always scared the crap out of me AND STILL DO!! I'm 31!! LOL

  • Thank you for preserving this memory, and making it available for us to see. These recordings are the closest we will ever come to achieving time travel...

  • i cant remember, was the squid holding a killer whale and were the mermaids topless, haha. also i remember the sea serpant being more childish looking

  • thx weve been waiting a while 2 see the sea monster because we hadnt seen it since we were little and couldnt quite remember what he looked like .... we tried other sites but none showed its face they mostly showed the outside of the ride or the top parts of the water but none showed deep enough to where the sea monster was so we deeply appreciate ur video thanks

  • Are you talking about the giant squid or the sea serpent?

  • Thanks. I'm surprised a constant video of the ride is out there. Usually people only include fragments from the ride.

  • cool thanks.

  • Cool video!I like the sea serpent part

  • Whoa!! This is the first video of the submarine ride where I can actually see the icebergs, deep sea fish and the giant squid. Thanks alot for posting this!
