Would love to see what notation they're actually reading on the scores - whacked out ... diminuendo whacked out ... seriously whacked out .. recoverando from being whacked out ..
unbelieveable, I lost all my respect to CT after this vid, thanks for the post... I was more awed when video pan to the "orchestra", they were reading from score?! if this is free jazz, what the hell are you reading from? there's no chord changes, are they just reading crosses and stars?
@edgeull Today my jazz teacher talked about him. he said he tried to understand it but it's just this barrage of noise. i looked it up and i'm in agreement. I'm so confused. o.o and i feel bad for the piano, he's just smacking random notes =o >.<
Cecil was great in the late '50's early 60's. Since then he's been playing the same shit over and over and shuckin' and jivin' everyone. I love some of his writing but his solos are so boring. I love "free" music when it is done well (Daniel Carter is my current fav) but this is just plain jive. Feel bad that Cecil sacrificed integrity for his 15 minutes (not some 50 years) of fame. N
I once asked Cecil, if any of his friends or family ever asked him what he wanted to become when he grew up? He told me that he told them that he wanted to become a SuperNova! and He has been ever since!
It's been a while since I've heard something so exciting. It's frightening! Even though it sounds very dissonant, I think parts of it are very happy and fun.
MikeJohnstonguitar, I agree. In the 60s this was novel, but it has worn off by now. After an evening of this, even 'Humpty Dumpty' will give you satori and bring tears of relief to your eyes. And believe me, I dig people like Ornette and Albert Ayler.
no way, Monk was erratic at times (very seldom though, and i understand his play space)... but he stopped playing after he got sicked during the 70s. apparently this is not the case for Cecil, too bad!
Its pretty arrogant to proclaim to the entire world what they should listen to, as if your opinion is unquestionably the best and most informed. The funny thing is that if you continue to remain interested in improvised and "serious" music, you will probably get this in a few years...
You're saying it was wrong of me to say what I think. But how can that be? You're proclaiming an opinion to the world too! Just by saying that, you are (like me) implying that your belief is correct! Now I'm saying that's ok, for us both to do that.
You say that it's wrong to limit what the definition of music is, and you say it's arrogant to say so. How is it not equally arrogant to say that?
My point is that neither of us are being arrogant. All human beings have opinions, say what their opinions are, and in doing so imply that their opinions are correct. There's nothing arrogant about that! :)
Arrogance would be to be unwilling to even listen to the other side.
this is like the modern art where people paint only white on a canvas or only black. It could be art, but its hard to judge it on traditional standards. Its the same as this: its not musical in the sense that bill evans or beethoven is musical, but whose to says those are the only choices?
anyone that says this isn't music shouldn't play music....this is brilliant because you can have 30 instrument playing at one time and it sounds beautiful as long as they remain in the scale, there is no wrong note in this scale. it's a fun and playful cluster of notes....How can anyone say this isn't music....anyone who says so is just close minded

That's the thing--this stuff can't be played wrong! It's impossible to mess it up. There's no good or bad way to play it.
One of the wonderful things about music is the challenge of doing it well. Music is something which stands in stark contrast to the unordained, not-good-or-bad sounds we hear all day long.
This isn't music, it is only noise. Don't be fooled by the "advanced" people who will tell you the lie that "everything is music". Maybe this is something, but it's certainly not anything musical. Before you jump on me, let me give you an example of something that is music: Hank Jones, playing The Very Thought of You @ youtube dom com /watch?v=04rox_89XxQ
But for a word to have meaning, it's definition must exclude some things. A "pencil" is only a pencil because the word excludes non-pencil things like crayons and markers. It might seem advanced or tolerant to say, "Pencils are just tools used to express things; Anything can be a pencil!" But by extending it's meaning, you've actually done something destructive! Now the word "pencil" doesn't convey anything; you've destroyed the idea of the pencil when you spread it's meaning out to thin.

I'd say music has to involve some form of melody/harmony. Without those qualities, all you'd have is a beat, at the most. And this video doesn't even have that; it's only noise.

I'm just trying to defend something I love. I love music, and I think it's one of the best gifts humanity's been given to enjoy. So when I see a video like this which viciously attacks music, some part of me wants to defend it.
If you loved children, and you saw a video of a child being abused, wouldn't you try to say something against that video?
"Arrogant" means you think highly of yourself. That has nothing to do with my point!
This is music though man. It's organized chaos. It evokes the most primal ignorant instincts in us all. Bang shit up. Each one of those musicians is expressing themselves as individuals in a group setting. It's like watching a crowd. Everyone is going somewhere using the same medium, musical instruments, but no one is going to the same place. It's beautiful.
"It evokes the most primal ignorant instincts in us all. Bang shit up". If this is how you feel about this music, how can you think it's any good? Your comment confuses me.
You must not be a musician, or at least not a free thinking one. Sometimes that's what sounds best to you. Sometimes you may want to sit down and play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" then turn right around and just want to hit a concert bass drum slowly over and over. It just depends on what you hear. Cecil just happens hear the free form stuff alot. And if you're still confused about my opinion; I like it.
You can judge for yourself as to how I think by reading my many comments on youtube re avant guard musicians. I'm usually defending them. I just don't know if you would feel so enthusiastic about other things that evoke "primal ignorant instincts", especially if these instincts were leveled against something that you love. I also doubt Cecil would agree that he is aiming to express what you feel his music evokes. I love Taylor, BTW, but I don't worship him.
Is this something you people instantly liked? or did you need to acquire a taste for it over time? I'm just wondering, because to me personally, it's not particularly enjoyable. Is there a certain way you need to listen to it, certain things to pay attention to? I'd like to understand it

Cecil is brilliant. To those who think this is not music... think again.
Thankfully Cecil chooses not to be Hank Jones (no slight to Hank).
Cecil's music is not everyone's preference but when I see comments like it is not music it only exhibits the limited scope of the writer.
Cecil lives, breathes and exudes music. And he is unique a quality that is rare.

It's simply expressing yourself through sound. Some people have to limit their expression to on tempo 4/4 music. Some people are more imaginative.
