  • One thing to consider is that lots of times SM58s are used by pub bands with vocalist screaming into them and you want that soft sound.

  • Good review, very precise. Would be interesting to test the AKG D7 vs. other industry standars. Best regards!

  • do you use a EQ for that record ? and.. what interface do you use

  • Handjob at 1:18

  • can you help me decide between Shure pg58 vs. AKG D8000. Reply soon. thank you

  • nice voice without singing!

  • Sweet guy!!!! Would look much better without glasses! Nice VOICE! :-)

  • very useful, thank you very much..

  • you are eating the mic

  • shure ftw. long long experience.

  • they sound VERY different in your demo. i think which one is "better" is not applicable here. totally different - impossible to compare. it seems Shure voices their mics to be more mid-rangey while akg to be more U shaped.

  • Bullshit, I can get the same results with a little tone adjustment. You didnt show us how your board was set. You could be giving the D5 more of anything. Id like to see how that D5 works after being dropped by some idiot Roadie. Im positive the Shure will still sound the same.

  • You base your microphones on how it would stand up if someone dropped it, rather than quality?

    Fool of a Took.

  • @BreathDoctor ive took the D5 everywhere dropped it thrown it stood on it and its stood the test of time. both good mics tho !!

  • @BreathDoctor I've got both of them, both microphones are pretty good. I prefer to choose microphone instead of adjusting the signal and I'll have better response and dynamic range. Depends on the vocalist. Both are good. I prefer AKG :P

  • When you talk in the AKG, my desks vibrates a small amount. When you switch back to the Shure 58, the vibrating gets even smaller... I personally like the AKG because it brings out the clarity much more, and as you said, clears out the muddiness.

  • So not to knock you but if you used a little more gain and less level and more high end your sound would be soooooo much clearer

  • I think you'll have more feedback from the D5 in a real live situation. I thought you were going to do a live Demo. C'mon let's see it.

  • dani uses the one in the left

  • which one ist better ?! what do you think ?

  • Could that muddiness of the Shure be that "warm" sound people always say it has? And would the comparison between the mics change at all if you were to test it with Live sound rather than recorded sound? I don't mean to be fending for Shure or AKG or anything. I'm just curious.

  • @bke1j1h It depends on the voice you are micing, the sm58 was developed for the rock genre and made popular by voices like Roger Daltrey. Some vocalists are buried, much like the person giving the demo here, while other vocalists sing with a lot of head resonance and overtones. The important thing is to try out many different mics for the voice, and go with what sounds the best in front of that person.

  • I really like the clarity of the D5. I see what you mean when you talk about the 58's muddiness...

  • @ AntonIceChill: That depends really on durability / usefulness. The Sure mics can take a beating. I would,kt trust the AKG so much in respect to that.

But, as far as a vocal / instrument mic, the flat topped AKG will pick up more from your amp if you decide to mic up your amp for the PA. Good luck + Keep us posted.

  • Being a KJ/DJ, I own both. In terms of frequency response, does it really matter after EQ? I prefer the AKG simply for the fact that it has an on/off switch. Also, the side cardioid is a plus. As far as sound + durability, it's a pretty close tie. If you can't decide, hell, go for looks. I love the flat top on the AKG. It feels a little nicer in your hand too. Very slim. (They're abt the same weight tho).. Thanks for the vid.

  • WorkingManStudios, I can't seem to figure out which one is better if your gonna rap. The D5, the Shure or the Audio tectnica. Please response quick.

  • Very informative video! I liked the D5, but I dont want to have to buy an audio interface, is there any way they (THe D5 or SM58) can be made to plug into the line in or USB?

  • @TheNaekid I've plugged a D5 into a usb and it woked great. Not sure about an SM58 though.

  • 58 has proximity effect and a presence peak, D5 has more proximity effect and a larger presence peak. Neither sounds at all natural. Both crap.

  • 3:26 you say 57 and not 58

  • great review. I was looking for a mic and found the D5 had great reviews but i have never heard it before and it sounds way better than the sm58. thanks for the video it was really helpful

  • The shure beta 58a though kills both mics i know their not in the same price range but i use the beta for screaming in my metalcore band and singing for both live and recording and its so clear

  • correct me if im wrong but I think the D5 breaks real easy

  • What is your source on "vera motion"? I don't see much literature about it available on the web.

  • youre better than justin bieber at singing real ;) your good singer

  • I´m still prefering the SM58

  • on the demos i hear the D5 sounds like it would mud out in a mix. tons of low mids. the 58 has less gain but more air to it and sub lows. I have a Neumman kms 104 and i never use it, the 58 works better in a mix, doesn't mud out. I know there has to be something better but I'm still looking.

  • Just bought myself a D5 and after that watched this vid. Nice to know that I have chosen the right mic! :D Nice video with good examples!

  • Does the D5 plug into a PC in anyway (USB, ect) to record?

  • Which mic is a more natural representation of your voice? Just more exact to it

  • awsome!!! thnx dude just all the information i needed without the load of crap =) keep uo the good work

  • I paid $195 for my AKG... You don't realize how cheap the U.S. really is.

  • I hate all other microfones than the AKG D5, just because i own one of 'em myself.

  • i would buy the sm58..i love it..but ...i love more..the beta58a...

  • nice review! after I turn down the 15% level of D5. I find they are almost the same.

  • Im a girl, nd I have a high voice, I prefer the D5 because it more simple and the sound on stage better captures my voice.

but if you do not want to risk, buy the Sm, I think in my case is better and cheaper d5, but you will not lose money with any one.

  • The D5 sounds very poppy and vulnerable to breath compared to the 58.

  • Which mic is better live?

I already have a CAD C195 for recording use.

  • Does the D5 come with a cable that I can plug into my computer?

  • Please make behind the scenes of this video and ur others and send to me asap ty

  • Good review though I've used a SM58 for years and it's very robust, time will tell with the AKG. Resileience to feedback on stage and handling noise you'd have to check out. In the Studio it's easy to hear the difference and the AKG sounds better asuming you have the same Eq on each Mic .Then again you can clean up the sound of the 58 with a bit of Eq and if your singing live against the backdrop of a band theres no way you'll tell the difference in the two in my opinion. Interesting though.

  • Hey, Im planning on my bands first home recording. so that means im a not very familiar with recordings, I just want to ask if the AKG D5 is suitable for hime recording,

    Thanks!

    Harold Li

  • D5 FTW

  • I have a wireless D5 and compared it to my wired SM58. D5 still sounds way better than the Shure. D5 has a smoother bass roll-off and crisp highs. Going to trade out few of the shure's for Akg's. I also have the Shure Beta 87A and that's one hell of a microphone.

  • You alone influenced my purchase and I do believe that because of this I made the right choice. Great video. :D

    Went with the AKG D5.

  • What microphone are you using with the windscreen at 00:20?

  • just grab the eq and roll off the lows a little bit and roll up the highs a little bit and you will have a great sounding mic with either of them.

  • The only reason (I think) that the ShureSM58 is most popular and forever depended on is simply because of it's history. It has been the most reliable microphone on earth. I heard this from a manager who owns equipments. He told me he had an SM58 that got bent, then he decided to play around with it, busted it with a hammer, droove it off a muddy road and abused it to the max. After a while of trying to connect the wires together, it still worked. So that's why. It's just DEPENDABLE is the word.

  • I heard The Shure SM58 has different effects for example , it gets lower when your mouth is near to it also you get more bass thats the reason why it sounds lower than the AKG D5, cause the guy is less than 2cm away from the mic, I will like to hear the SM58 3 or 4 inches away from his mouth !! I will bet it sounds just as the AKGD5 or better. Many famous artist around the world keep using the ShureSM58 instead of other brands , even profesional music engineers around the world.

  • @vampoxxx that's just what happens with any mic. professional singers will use correct mic technique and pull the mic away or bring it closer. it's nothing special to the sm58

  • 20,000 kHz!

  • considering i have a high voice, do you think i would be better buying a shure 58 or AKG D5?

  • @supersonicdrawer D5 I reckon, better response at high frequencies

  • @cjSensation Spend the extra cash for the SM58. SM48 to me handles just a bit better than a radioshack mic in terms of handling noise.

  • D5 sounds better on my end.. presence cuts more..

  • sm 58 sounds better, when you where singing, less vol. only.my opinion.

  • i wonder what the big difference between these two mics. im probably will buy d7

  • Hi there, thank you for this. Makes a sense and answered some questions. However how would you compare the Rode M1 to the AKG D5? (Struggling to choose) Thanks

  • Have you ever done a comparison with the Sure sm 58 compared to an Electrovoice N/D967 as its seems on paper to be similiar to the Sure Beta 58 and with that being said what is your experience with that ,Thankyou I look forward to your response.

  • i trust the sm58. been around for years, and is a classic. and at $99, i'm sticking with it.

  • This is amazing. I was just looking on YouTube whether anyone shows off the AKG D5, and I found your video. Thank you.

    Two quesions please:

► Is there any Wind-Protection existing that matches the size ?

► Would that mic be alright for making interviews ?

    Thank you very much.

  • wat u used for recording?

  • As a amateur musician whose just started full-time vocals this has been very educational as ive been trying to choose a decent microphone for a modest price so ty dude =D

  • What about dynamic vocal microphones ATR-1300 which adapter to use stereo or mono ?

  • great tips and your voice isn't bad. you'd make a gr8 rock singer. sounds like seether or nickleback in a way. I'm thinking about a new mic brand. i'm working with behringer c-1u and i'm not having much luck with that in recording but then again i'm new to recording.

  • @donotlosefaith: Thanks, I consider myself a backup vocalist. No way could I go solo (My girlfriend and family tell me not to quit my day job constantly).

  • about dynamic vocal microphones I have mic cable with 1/4 in the end of it which adapter better to use ?

    1-stereo

    2-mono ?

  • @realjuvelive: Mono. This mic is not stereo

  • i thought that sm58 was much better but after i watched this video i'm think i'm gonna buy the d5

  • It sounds to me the SM58 has noisy treble.

  • @cleanmusic213: I would say it lacks treble compared to the D5

  • nice vid! what do you think about the akg d7? is it much more better then the d5? i had the sm58 for a while but.. i agree..is muddy in the low mid frequencies..and i was looking for something clearer and more defined...

  • @Zkidoo: D7 is a good mic too its more expensive and is supposed to offer a better pickup system. Cant confirm though.

  • @WorkingManStudios Hello, I play lead guitar in a band and recently decided to maybe sing backing vocals. What mic would you recommend: the Shure PG58 XLR or the AKG D5 ? (I'm a student so I don't really have the money for expensive mics :p) Thanks!

  • i've had an AKG C535EB in gig use for a year now, and i really love the sound of it, even more than the great sure beta 87. But i really want to get off those unnecessary wires on stage, and buy a wireless microphone, and i find 1000euros a bit too much with shure beta 87, so if you know, tell me, that is D5 even closely as good as akg c353? D5's wireless system versio costs around 400e..tell me your opinion! :) thanks.

ps. D5 sounds better vocal mic than 58.

  • @iCrooner89 can i use the d5 for indoor videos, cause i dont wanna get to fancyu with the indoor mic if im using a atr55 for out door use

  • @javieralza: Yes I do not see why not

  • @javieralza the d5 is awesome. I have one because it is very feedback resistant. I got 5 more notches out of my volume. Almost doubled the volume

  • @iCrooner89: The D5 is def worth it. There are a few well known stages and bands using them as their touring mics. Wired and Wireless.

  • @WorkingManStudios get the beta 87 you will never regret it

  • GOOD VIDEO DUDE

  • does akg make an active version of the D5?

  • @shaundegracia: Not currently no.

  • @shaundegracia I found one, it's called a C5. I haven't tried it out yet.

  • @shaundegracia the C5 is a condensor mic in the same style if thats wat you mean.

  • I've been trying to get my producer friends sold on the D5, it's such a great mic and you can get it for pretty good prices if you haggle. I got mine for 60 bucks when I bought my in-ears. I'll post a response video where my backup vocals and voiceover are done with the D5 directly into a Presonus Firestudio Mobile

  • Hey, Which of the two microphones would you suggest for screaming vocals?

My band and I are looking for a microphone to use for our recordings, and in a possible live setting. Btw, very nice video, out of sheer luck i found a video with the exact to mic's my band was debating haha.

  • @Thrasher1131: I would suggest the D5 because of its supercardioid pattern

  • It's just to use for a couple of times in a pub as we want to create a karaoke night.

But i wanted to sound not to bad as a cheap philips or some like that...

Is it still the sm58 you prefair?

Btw sorry for my bad language as i am a duth guy

  • hey, i am looking for a good micophone for use on small party's. i have a butged of +- 200$ . witch would you choose?

    Thanks dude

  • @klefroid: Well the SM58 is a good choice because it rarely breaks. What will you be using it for? Bands or just speech?

  • Comment removed

  • @klefroid: You could get the D5 for cheaper so you could go with that but the 58 has a better gain before feedback.

  • Thanks for doing this its a great video. D5 is clearly superior sounding, singing and speaking in my opinion. The 58 is fine but I've always found it to have too much low/low mid for lots of singers and it can be hard to get rid of. Now whether or not the D5 picks up too much high end bleed in small clubs is my main concern. Based on sound alone its a no brainer and the D5 sells for cheaper($68) on ebay. I have one on the way and I'll be doing some comparison testing in clubs,.

  • @thedome949: Your welcome, im glad you enjoyed it. I agree the 58 is muddy in the low mids. The D5 is one of my favorite mics. If you enter that code I give in the beginning you get a great discount at PROAUDIOSTAR,COM and free shipping too. You should take a look and some of my other mic reviews in this price range.

  • Thanks for posting this response. It's the D5 all the way!

  • Is a Shure SM57 any good for vocals? I found one on clearance for $58 at a local music shop

  • @ElegyForTheMasses: Yes the 57 is a great vocal mic. Its actually a great all around mic to have. But there are alot of fakes out there and if its selling for $58 used then it is probably a fake since no licensed shop is allowed to sell them for less than $99. so if you want check out my videos on the fake SM57 and the real SM57 then go and compare the mic. Just dont buy it because its cheap, the fakes look totally convincing.

  • @WorkingManStudios Thanks for the reply. I actually found the D5 with a mis-marked price at Guitar Center yesterday for $60 so I bought it instead. It sounds great! Thanks!

  • @WorkingManStudios You might find yourself disappointed in it's gain before feedback ratio when comparing it to other mics but it's a defenitely good sounding mic for vocals, very full and natural sounding when pointed correctly at the source.

  • @shaundegracia: I agree with you.
