Talk to me when you've all seen her Roses Turn. While she doesn't sing the song through as much as Bernadette or Angela, she IS Rose. Her grip on the character is both inspiring and entrancing, I could not look away.
daly is no match for lupone or peters from a purely musical standpoint. but from what i've heard she was probably the best rose dramatically (makes sense, as she's clearly the most accomplished ACTOR of all who have played rose, except for lansbury). and having a non-singer and non-dancer play rose actually adds poignacy to the role--a mother with showbiz dreams but who clearly has no talent of her own pursuing her ambition through her daughters.
Patti was absolutely amazing. I worship at the altar of LuPone. I do have to say though, I love Angela, Tyne, Bernadette and Bette. Whenever you have the perfect musical formula plus some grade A talent, you get magic.
My favorite Mama Rose. I have the two most recent albums and just didn't feel like I had a definitive Gypsy recording until I got the one with Tyne. Do love Angela and Ethel though. And Rosalind Russell.
I was lucky enough to have seen Tyne do the role when she later did do the show in NY. Did not have that great a voice,I thought, but she gave the character a truly great humanity .
Its was fantastic it was great to meet her you know!!!! i learned a ton from her she was briliant what an inspiration! But deff taking the class with her was great!!!
My first reaction to seeeing this was: oh dead god, who let HER do this role? I thought it was awful. The more I listen to it, however, the more I like it.
Tyne's got the grit that goes with the role. Take a look at the character in the play...she's not so nice, rather pushy. Tyne has a great voice that brings the grittyness to the fore.
I have to say that Bernadette Peters version was not a flop commercially; it made far more money than the LuPone version. It's hard to quantify a real list of who is the best Mama Rose...the role is so well written that it can be done in different way and all of them approached it differently. You may have a favorite, but best is a silly comparative word that devalues the part and the theater.
Oh my God, I forgot Bette Middler. Well I would drop her in right after Lansbury. She played a great Rose, maybe a little too Norma Desmond like, I mean come on Rose wasn't THAT crazy! The acting may be a little over-the-top and campy, but it's still fun. Middler also sang the songs live for the TV movie, something that is NEVER done! She deserves props for that. The TV movie was the most Emmy nominated ever, and won the most for a TV Movie too!
The original, whom the character was based on, as the part was written specifically for her. Merman just
didn't play a great Rose, she was Rose: Loud, Brassy, Unapologetic and Tough. A classic!
2. LuPone
LuPone is an actress who happens to sing, and her revival in 2008 proved that "Gypsy" can stand alone as a play because its book is so strong if you have the right lead. There's a fire behind LuPone that we haven't seen in Rose since Merman back in 1959.
Lansbury was plucked to play Rose in the first revival since Merman's run on Broadway in 1959 and the subsequent tour. Just a solid performance all around; great acting and vocals. Must have been daunting to be the first to follow Merman, but she won a Tony for it!
4. Daly
While she many not have the greatest vocals, Daly brought a kind of blue-collar. working-class flare to Rose. The fact that she wasn't a huge singer played into that appeal. Her acting was genuine and frank.
Was the first to break the Merman mold, it didn't work. She played Rose as a mousy, sex-kittenish woman who was sneaky and vulnerable, the exact opposite of Rose. Rose didn't show any hint of emotion or vulnerability. Rose was loud and she didn't give a damn about it. She didn't lure Herbie with her womanly charm, he was attracted to her for the woman she was. Plus I think she really didn't have the vocals. Her revival was a flop, critically and commercially. And she lost the Tony.
Sigh. Just a bad move on the Hollywood's part. The idea was to cast a big acctress in the role so she would bring people into the theaters, I guess they forgot to make sure she could sing though. The acting is fine, but her vocals are just God awful, they are so bad they are laughable, even with dubbing by Lisa Kirk. Plus she looks ridiculously old for the part. I also put her last because of the back-room dealings that kept Merman from the role. La Merm would have killed it!
And that's what makes it a horse race! Everyone gets to decide who THEY like best. There's no "best" here. Each woman brought different gifts and talents to the role and all of our memories of each one are affected by who WE were when we saw them (if we were lucky enough to see them) and then the haze of our own nostalgia about the experience.
Celebrate them all -- in what is truly a GREAT American musical!
After reading your comments about all the ROSES, I could not agree more. But did you ever see Delores Gray? Overall my favorite. She had the best qualities of the best of all of them.
I saw her "ROses Turn" posted up and she talked through the whole song and was akward on the stage... i loved it. Definently one of my favorite roses. my list is as follows
1= best
1.Patti
2.Lansbury
3.Daly
4. Merman
5.Bette
6. Roz (onyl behind bette because she never sang.)
Wow. I was pleasantly surprised with this performance. I didn't know she could sing like that. Wow. I recently saw a touring company that stopped at my college last week. The woman who played Rose did a phenomenal job! I have to admit that Tyne and the woman I saw as Rose are among my favorites.

Some 40 years later I went to see Tyne Daly in that role wondering whether she would measure up to Merman; when I left the theatre I thought that Ethel Merman was lucky as today I would be asking if Ethel could measure up to Tyne's performance.
Granted, I never saw Merman do it, nor Lansbury [sp!!], but I DID see Daly perform it twice. From the audio recordings, I'd have to pick Lansbury as my first choice. Just trivia... In the movie, Kirk dubbed the vocal for Rose's Turn, but on the album soundtrack, Russell sang it [her voice]. As least that's what I was told many years ago.
I like this better than the CD. When listening to the CD, I'm not a fan of Tyne's Rose. But I guess she sounds better live, because I like this a lot.
This version is very "up-tempo," and she's singing it "as herself." I like it alot! Search TYNE DALY on youtube and you'll find a clip of her singing Rose's Turn in character [from B'way]. It's her acting, not singing that really sells the character!!
Like I said above, her acting "made" the character. I saw her in Gypsy twice on B'way. Singing was okay. An "intense Mama-Rose" sold me on her - totally!!
It is a fact that Tyne Daly, like the rest of NY at the time, had a bug and the producers went ahead and did the recording anyway. That recording does not do her justice and I saw her in a few cities and it's a shame there is not a better recording. CBS should have filmed her instead of Midler who chews the scenery.
She looks like a woman.

The technical voice is just a tool in the American Musical Theatre. If you want to hear just a voice, go to La Scala or the PO. Ms.
Daly is Mama Rose. I feel the pain of Mama Rose and her daughter in Ms. Daly's performance.

Haha the real rose was wayyy crazier? She almost killed Junes fiannce and killed another person and said it was a suicide.
But Bette was a bit to crazy for the musical.

Okay everybody.. First, let's throw-out Bette and Roz 'cause they just did movie-versions [and Roz didn't sing herself].
So.....
1 Tyne - best acting, intense delivery, okay singing
2 Angela - most believable actress, strong vocals
3 Ethel - originated the role, gutsy belting
4 Bernadette - wishy-washy delivery, tiny voice/vocals
5 Patti - mumbly lackluster dialog, always sings sharp {nasty vibrato}
