I don't smoke never have and never will i think its a nasty addiction, but you fail to mention that smokers pay 2x more taxes through their smokes for their health care so really how much are you paying for their health care? I feel that in Canada, where I live, a balance of a sort occurs. I don't feel the system is terribly abused. Take a 1-carton/week smoker. That is $2000+ a year in taxes. x 40 years = $80,000.00 in taxes over a lifetime of smoking. 10 smokers will pay $800k in taxes over 40 years and only 1 will die of lung cancer. Get your facts straight. States NEED smokers.

I understand your concern but honestly, I don't think that it works out that way in the end and I have a suspicion that much of that fear that is connected to healthcare in the States is unwarranted. I feel that in Canada, where I live, a balance of a sort occurs. I don't feel the system is terribly abused. The payoff may be a more connected society that has a deeper awareness of each other and the responsibility that can go with that.

It is seeing things like this that leave many of us living in the rest of the world continuously perplexed about the U.S. There was a period when the country was seen as beacon of ideas and innovation, whereas now it is mostly seen as country so scared of social policy and loosing world control that people view it with much more pity than admiration. beginning of year my COBRA for me and my spouse would cost over $700 a month..Plus the Co-pays ..Do you think it's fair to pay that much for a not so great coverage? I didn't choose to have my job sent to Taiwan..Maybe when you come to a point when you have to choose between food or medication, you will see where I come from.
