My Dad served under Gen Patton and Gen Clark during the invasions of North Africa, Italy, Sicily and Southern France, Grew up on my Dad's knee hearing about "ole blood & guts Patton, our blood & his guts."Dad loved Gen Patton & received a unit citation from him along with a Bronze Star with 4 oak leaf clusters. My Dad fought on Anzio Beach and the battle of Monte Casino. He passed away in 1995. A WWII hero.
The German commander-in-chief stationed at the German Gustav Line wrote to his Führer Hitler; The impossible has been done, the Moroccan Goums have crushed and conquered our line of defences
@hockey6467 I disagree but respect your opinion :) to my mind not following up in Italy to cut off the Germans and so possibly allow an advance into Germany and France for Clarke's own personal amusement and ego of being the one to liberate Rome far out strips the loss in a single 6 day major battle.
@Delogros Well thnk you, but fredendall didn't do one good thing during the war. I'm not arguing that Clark was good, but he didn't stay 40 miles away from the frnt in a underground cave i order to "well" communicate with the front line and be able to direct them better. Give credit to Clark for one thing though, he accepted to have the 442nd under his command when everbody else didn't want them.
@hockey6467 I don't disagree paticularly, think I have a scewed opinion on this as my Grandad was in 8th Army and fought under Clarke in Italy, lets just say he was less then impressed... As a result I know a lot more about how Clarke was useless then Fredendall but haveing re read the Kasserine battle information either he or/and a lare portion of his staff seems to have not really had a clue...
absolutely a superb documentary the Italians were never a force to be reckoned with, the Germans did all the fighting for them. Mussolinni was just a mere spectator. Thank you allies for your sacrifice

Great documentary.
Italy certainly wasn't "The soft underbelly" as Churchill had predicted, the seasoned German troops made it a hell for the Allies.

for more in-depth reading on the battle of Italy, y'all should read Rick Atkinson's book "The Day of Battle, The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944".

@kutulu6 yes Italy turned out to be less of an ally to Germany and more of a hindrance.

In 11/12 episode, the narrator, Tim Pigott Smith, said of the Poles fighting at Casino, their attack "...petered out." lol
What kind of a name is Pigott anyway?
