The tune is an old celtic melody, and the lyrics are by Joseph Campbell. The best version I ever heard (and have , and heard many in my 60 years)of this haunting "Garten Mother's Lullaby" was by the Corries (strangely enough!) on their CD The very best of the Corries. (track14).
