This is something I have always admired, and also something I would love to get into. But I do not know where to begin. Any advice? You do great work keep the videos coming.
if you are working all day, my guess would be few months. Of course it depends on kind of armor you want to make. The tihickness varies between 1 to 2 mm, depending on parts.
The best place to start if you're serious about learning to make armour is "Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction: The 14th Century" by Brian Price. Copies turn up on Amazon and eBay from time to time, but get snapped up quickly, and usually for quite a price, and with good reason too!
If this is made out of mild steel can someone explain why it does not rust? I am having a hard time understanding this. Anything I make out of mild steel, especially if I do a grind finish or sand it, will have finger prints all over it and it will start rusting within days. I would really like to know what the deal is here.
That tool for punching holes... shh what a lifesaver. Drilling trough a heated steel plate really kills drillbits. Nice stuff. The band saw as well. One can go crazy with small dremel cutting discs.
Great job. It must feel fantastic once you completed it, left you hungry for more.
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm just getting into armouring and without someone to work with, it can be difficult to figure out how to perform some of the techniques I read about. Being able to see the process mostly from start to finish is a tremendous help.
Once again, I can't thank you enough for these videos.
SgtViktor i have a question, you made two gauntlets one made out of 1 piece and the other gauntlet made out of two pieces and I dont mean the finger peaces, now my question is which of those two gauntlet are stronger? protects more?
I'm pretty sure the one with more pieces is the right hand. Reason? More flexibility. You can't swing a sword in something you can't maneuver your hand in. left has less flexibility likely for 2 reasons: 1. You don't need to waste material on a shield arm that wont be used as much. 2. Because when you have a shield you don't need to use your hand as much as your arm and wrist.
And about them being stronger, I think they're the same or pretty close. Same steel thickness. BUT! The one piece one would take a harder hit without hurting your hand.
P.S. how did you get to this point? is that your shop? is this your job or do you do somthing else? I would give my firt born to have a fully equiped work shop...How long have you been making armor, and if you dont mind how old are you?
hy! eric, you're a great armourer! this job is fantastic! i like youre raising process! in future do you show to how make greaves with medieval process? it will be fantastic... and the pauldrons! can you show somthing?
Tremendous job, Eric! I am still amazed to see the harness fully completed after seeing the short clips and photos come in month by month. I would recommend you to anyone desiring a Medieval harness reproduction. Feel free to use any of my photos or link to my galleries to advertise your work.
I'm starting out in the armouring buisness and I must say your videos are really helpfull. Thank you.

I wonder how they make sheet metal during medieval era?
deaftodd 2 years ago 2
sheets were either cast or hammered out of a single billet into the size/thickness desired.

Hello. What torch You use? Oxy-propane, or oxy-acetylene?
I love Your videos. : )
(sorry for my eng)
atepiro 2 years ago
Oxy-propane
Yarder122 2 years ago
Probably just a regular propane torch. Pure O2 and propane or acetylene would vaporize steel, thats why they use it in cutting torches.

A full suit of armor might cost around 4000 dollars, but it depends on where you buy it.
