Engineers managed to build a rail system across the US in the 1800s without leveling any mountains. Plans are in place to build a Maglev train from LA to Vegas however funding was stopped. An environmental study is under way for a Maglev between Atlanta and Chattanoogo, NY to DC and then DC to Chattanoogo. Perhaps the Obama administration will see the value and push funding. We need air service but it is impractical for the level service (and cost) our nation requires.

With the exception of Hawaii, all this transport could be handled by high speed rail, saving millions of gallons of fuel a year.

High speed rail will NEVER happen in this country because special interests will screw it up in EVERY way possible.

We'd only have to level several mountains, find a way to create a parallel transportation system without destroying road travel and find a way to build the rail equivalent of A380 all on a standardized track.
