My parents have weekly fights with insurance over whether or not they are required to cover the medications I've been taking literally since I was born, because our insurance will every so often decide that I don't actually need that medication. Dude, I am so with you.
Is it Ulcerative Colitis Hank has? I had that before they cut that 90% of bad bowel away! Dude all pills suck! IT IS ADDING TO WORLD SUCK LEVELS! Gahh!
I don't think I've ever been more grateful to live in a country with socialized medicine. Sure, Canada's healthcare system sometimes takes a while to get you results, but at least it's there; at least you don't have to worry about whether you can afford to get a prosthetic lung or have a baby. One way to improve clinic waiting times, I think, would be to educate people about herbal medicine and teach them that they don't need to run to the doctor every time they have a cold.
my mom and dad are on a diabetes medication that is not prescribed in some countries because it is linked to an increased risk for certain cancers. They don't have health insurance because they are too young for medicare and not poor enough for medicaid. Meanwhile i see a commercial on TV that shows that a brand of penis pumps is covered by medicare, and that the tax money my parents pay to their country is going to some old dudes junk, while they have to choose between diabetes and cancer...

@Ikaruszaki I've been asking myself the same question. Slovenia is pretty much like any other modern European country (as far as I can tell, I am not from Slovenia myself, they are just our neighbors...).
I agree that you say "we're behind Puerto Rico" in a way that could be interpreted as if there's something shameful or inconceivable about being "behind" PR in something. But I understand that you're trying to make a point and are simply defending a position you feel very strongly about (and I also believe that you're genuinely made of awesome) so I'll choose to continue believing in your respect for all people. :) :) Just be a little cautious with how you phrase and tone certain things.
I love ya man, and I'd love to see you be able to get insurance. Injecting the politics, can that be done without a 2000 page monstrocity that is going to screw up the rest of your getting health care in exchange for insuring you. I want you to get health care, but I don't see how this monster is going to make it any easier. /mini-rant
Hank, I am in the exact same situation as you. I am 16 and was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 14. Fortunately, my mom works for the local hospital, so I'm covered under her insurance. When I turn 24, though, that health insurance goes away (and it goes away before then if I get a full-time job). So, eight years in advance, I am worrying about whether or not I can survive without a full-time job until I'm 24, and if I can find a job that will give me health insurance. I know how you feel.
You say Puerto Rico like it's a bad thing... :( (although explaining to the general viewer that PR has practically the same health care system redeems you)
Thanks for this, John. As a writer who doesn't really expect to make enough money to be able to afford insurance, sometimes I worry about this kind of thing happening to me.
I'm right there with you Hank. My sister is too poor to have health insurance, because she was so selfish as to have jobs like a teacher's aid at a school for kids who have been removed from their homes and a nurse's aid in a nursing home. She is in constant pain from fibromyalgia and cannot buy the medicine she needs. People who try to lessen World Suck should not be punished by pain and illness. No one deserves to be sick because some company decides they aren't worth covering.
it is kind if wierd to think that a country that has a smaller population than california (canada) has a healthcare system that helps everyone that is sick
The rant is one of the many major reasons I'm moving to Europe as soon as I can. They have better health care systems and I like their governmental set up better there... As in... It won't be too bad to vote for the wrong guy, because he won't hold THE FREE WORLD IN HIS HANDS! I like smaller nations, they WORK! Large nations end up forgetting about something, and health is one of them. I have terrible problemos and I'm going to be pwned by big business because of it.
It's been 10 months since you posted this, and I can't tell you how many times I've played it (along with the neverftba extended version of Pills Pills Pills from Hank) for others to prove the point that just because someone's uninsured doesn't mean s/he is lazy, poor or doesn't want to pay for it. And also to prove the point that what the uninsured are left with, namely emergency rooms and generic drug substitutes, are not good enough!

Again, I sing the praises of my country - Canada, land of the socialized healthcare!
Citizens of the US, I urge you to check out the healthcare system of your neighbour to the north - we all pay for each other's healthcare in the form of taxes, and I can assure you that we do not all have to share one chemotherapy machine, it does not lead to obscene overcrowding of our ERs, and no one is mad at anyone else for being sick and needing help to pay for treatment.
@jukalowe I totally agree with you. I live in Toronto and I've been having this horrible stomach problem lately. I've been to my family doctor three times, had blood and urine tested twice, I got a gastroscopy (When they shove a camera down your throat), and tomorrow I'm getting an upper GI track thingy. The total cost to me (My mom actually, I'm only 16), will be 25 dollars because it's a specialized surgeon who will look at the ultrasound from my test tomorrow.
@jukalowe I would like to point out, good sir, that many times Canadians come down to the United States to pay for medical treatment, because your system simply takes too long to aid medical crises that are not immediately visible. Yes, we would share the cost, but it is proven that any government who does any sort of intervention in any field manages to hemorrhage money horribly. Government health care is inefficient to the highest degree, and the system we have , though imperfect, does work.
See, this is one of the reasons why I think Denmark should be the state of Nerdfighteria... Free health care :D Oh, and also... You're paid to go to school...
John, you may not read this, but I think you just swayed me to universal health care. I guess I had never really thought about it like that before... Well done.
I saw this video back when it was posted, but I decided to come back and check it out again. I think this may well be my favorite of all John's videos.
I saw this video like... ages ago. This was probably like the tenth B2.0 video I've seen actually.
It made me sad then... But now, after I've realized just how awesome you and Hank are...
I just don't know. It makes me really upset. Seeing Hank sick and seeing you upset about it and knowing that there IS another way, but it just hasn't happened here.
Like you, I feel passionately about the problems with health care.
"All he ever did wrong was be sick."
That was the line that brought tears to my eyes. I was recently too sick to go to work for a week, and consequently had my health insurance taken away because my average amount of hours wasn't high enough to be considered 'full time'. What a horrible and ironic world we live in...
Let's hope that someday soon, things will turn around.
I hear you about the health care system. I just turned 19 and lost my health insurance that I was covered by from my parents. It's kind of scary. mmmmm
John - I've posted a video response: "The Healthcare Solution: California OneCare." It explains how to fix the healthcare crisis in the U.S. The answer is 'single payer' health insurance--the way they do it in every other industrialized nation and cover all the people for everything for less than half of what we spend on healthcare in the U.S. The national legislation is HR 676. In CA it's SB 840. Join us to help make this the law of the land. It would mean everything to Hank.
I live in Indonesia, my country is a desolate place where millions of people die without even being recorded as ever being alive, corpses are plentiful and education is a scracity. Terrorism is not a villain as compared to the government, which is so corrupt most of us can't understand what 'morality' means anymore. My very existence in this world is a miracle. I don't know, but whenever i read about how horrible America is, a part of me wants to cry, and another one rant on someone elses video.
It is really insane that someone like Hank shouldn't be able to get Health Insurance. It's not as if he's not willing to pay for it, or anything, he just won't be covered! What is this country coming to?
I think it is extremely sad that with all of our resources and with all that this country has done that we can't simply find a way to get everyone healthcare.
then how is this free health care and what about the people who can't afford to pay their fair share. its just like everything else the. the wealthy would have to pay more and recieve an equal amount of the benefits.
How terribly frightening that money comes before health.
I don't understand how a country can back up a president who spends billions of tax dollars on a war that kills people, when they could be using those tax dollars here at home on health care.
without money you can't afford health or food so get over your hippie lets share everything bullshit. liberals like you are the reason hardworking people who are wealthy don't get stimulus checks or tax refunds because they make to much and have to pay more. all wars kill people. a little FYI Obama supports communists guerrila forces in Columbia who kill people read some actuall unbiased news.
FIRST: you stated that you're wealthy because you're hard-working. Uhh.. the welathy deserve to get back more money because..?
SECOND: Actually, people who make less are taxed more, by percentage
THIRD: It sounds like your priorities are really messed up. We live in a "wealthy" nation but people are dying everyday for one reason. No money. How is that? I would rather live comfortably and pay a little extra taxes for everyone to live, than be rich while others die. Wouldn't you?
they don't deserve more but they should recieve their fair refund and everyone needs to pay the same percent. I pay more but do i get anymore use of the highway or the park than the store clerk. don't get me wrong alot of people work hard but its bull to say that the wealth just sit back and can afford it. Third we are a wealthy nation but people abuse it through everyday use like illegal aliens using the emergency room and in the government both republicans and democrats abuse our nation.
So you're saying, that since you pay more money into taxes you should be able to do more things than a person who does not pay as much.
I believe that's called Plutocracy.
"illegal aliens using the emergency room"
Americans do that. They will drive to Canada's busy emergency rooms to get treated because they can't get seen in America without having to put a second mortgage on their house.
I know. I have friends who live on the border and do that.
Yeah Zeppelin is great but i'm not saying we deserve more i'm just saying we all should pay equal because we recieve equal benefits. sure americans do the same thing but who pays for the fucking mal practice insurance when some dip shit wants to sue because they have some after surgery pain or some bull like that. i donate to but when you support people SOME will abuse it. life is unfair and someone will always be offended.
the government can't dish out money for people or health care. look at welfare, it has become corrupt because for some its sending them a message of why improve our selves the government will support us.why should anyone pay more for others when its all equal. you can donate you fucking paycheck to charity but i work to hard.
do you ever go out and help people improve their lives or share your food with them or your money. you can only change the world if you change yourself. anyone can speak of change and not do anything, look at Obama. thanks to human nature there will never be a solution. if you help some the others who can afford it complain. by the way whe the government pays for this stuff it all comes from citizens pockets.
I know that the money for nationwide health care comes from the citizens pockets.
And I do reach out to other people in need.
What kind of person would I be if I just sat at a computer all day and not go out and physically make a difference?
But, Mr. canno73, it's people like you who make it frustrating for people me to go out and see how things could be better if your generation would allow it.
i have given a bum a twenty for money and he went straight into a licker store so don't blame the rich for the poor's problems. by the way you stupid bitch i'm sixteen and my dad has never held anyone back from helping he and i give turkeys to the poor on the holidays and i do community service, and if your fat ass would read a book. his generation was the 60's peace generation.
every damn generation is split and if our generation wasn't the entitled give me give me generation people would stop blaming everyone else but themselves. you are blaming old people because of poverty and other things.
This whole time I thought I was DEBATING with a fifty something year old male.
When this whole time I was arguing with a sixteen year old boy?
But for the record.
I don't blame "old people" for poverty. I blame who they elected. And since this is a democracy those elected reflect those who elected them. At least they should.
I'm done with this.
Go hit puberty, take your senior year ecconomics class, and when daddy is paying for your college education, you can use that against me.
cool but don't act all mature you are like twenty. young people elected officials. hint hint, rock the vote. so what if my dad is paying for my college he invested and planned for it. how does that make you better than me. i'm sorry that i don't need to rely on the government to help me out.
cheers! the health insurance system we have in place is evil! I actually lived with Gall Bladder disease for two years before I finally HAD to have emergency surgery to have the thing removed. (or die) All because I couldn't afford the opperation I needed.
I have insurance now through my wife... but only because she works for a major corperate chain..
Go john! :) that rant just made my evening. i have never understood that about america at all. we brits may moan endlessly about the nhs but i think most of us don't know how lucky we are. get well soon hank.
YAY! Finally someone bringing up the importance of universal health care! John, please tell me you're for an increase in taxes, or I'll cry. I've lived in Sweden for nearly a decade, and I high taxes are the best thing to have happened to me!
//Jarrett
P.S. - It'd be much appreciated if you could make a mention of Sweden's superior living standard, just to keep Nerd Fighters informed(L)
i compleatly concur with your healthcare rant!!! i work in a store in wich has a pharmacy and i see it evryday people who dont have healthcare and cant buy things they need like oh idk FOOD because they need sertin drugs to live. but im only eightteen and im not sure who to vote for, but i do indeed feel very strongly about this type of thing. its scary to think in june i need my own insurence and healthcare i dont know how to go about all this!!
so basically all come and live in the UK with me and enjoy our lovely NHS, I say lovely, what I mean is from my experience it's less hectic than E.R and it's freeeee
I was talking to an American the other day about healthcare, and I couldn't BELIEVE that there is no National Health Service in America. We have one here in Britain; perhaps it's not brilliant, but it's free. And it's for everyone.
hey man slovenia is not some backward country that people can throw in to show how primitive the US is. it actually quite a high standard of living (and also happens to have a good universal healthcare system), and I wish people would stop using it to show crappy healthcare in the US is.
Ya know I never figured I'd see myself watchig any videos like yours, but now that I've watched a few, I like your point of perspective on alot of topics. I think that even though its not violent or randomly funny in many of your videos, its a good series. Keep it up. Subscribed.
National Healthcare can also be bad. People from Canada come down to the U.S to get operations. There is up to a years waiting list for a lot of surgeries. Some have longer waiting lists. For someone with terminal cancer this is almost definitely a death sentence.
Given, it can be changed and perfected to suit America and give those of us that want to choose our healthcare the option. Thatd be cool! But I don't trust anyone in any part, or who may be in any part, of our government to do this.
The problem isn't that Slovenia has a lower mortality rate. It's just that the US, as one of the most powerful countries in the world, should be able to support its employed general populace with at least some form of national health care system... But it doesn't.
the United States has built is strong enough to support both people who pay taxes and don't. We need a new system, we need a better system. Our country is in such a horrible crisis and what are paying attention to? A war that nobody wants to be a part of? BAH!
That is why I think some politicians should hide in a cave when they get out of office because I will have many choice words to say to them.
Wow, my rant went on for two comments. Go me. Lovely video.
Right on, brother (aha, I just got it. Pun INTENDED!)! I work part time at Starbucks and I am more than grateful that I have the option to receive health care (though I deny it because I still live with my mummy. shut it.)
Anyway, I do believe that many people abuse our health system and that is why it is so expensive. We pay for medicare out of our income tax yet we have millions upon millions of illegal immigrants who don't pay taxes eat it up. I don't think the system the United States TBC
i think that the whole dang system of insurance is completly wack. there has got to be a better way to take care of the people of the world. i think the nerdfighters could come up with something if we all put our minds too it. that could be our new project. just like i think if we had a big enough think tank we could stop global warming.
yeah i have health insurance and they never pay for my crap.. like when i was little i had scoliosis and they wouldn't get me a freaking brace!!! they just wanted to wait until it got soo bad that i couldn't breathe and had to live life hunched over a scooter. So my parents payed for all the stuff. I get sick.. with weird things.. A LOT.. and health insurance never ever covers me.. they always get out of it.
It occurs to me that "inside jokes" is something that all nerdfighters have. Since nerdfighters are made of awesome, they are thusly very "jokes" inside.
this video made me angry....i loved it!!! somthing NEEDS to be done about our healthcare system...most people in england go their whole lives without paying a single medical bill

Re: Hank's plight.
I love ya man, and I'd love to see you be able to get insurance. Injecting the politics, can that be done without a 2000 page monstrocity that is going to screw up the rest of your getting health care in exchange for insuring you. I want you to get health care, but I don't see how this monster is going to make it any easier. /mini-rant
trapjohnson 2 years ago
Hank, I am in the exact same situation as you. I am 16 and was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 14. Fortunately, my mom works for the local hospital, so I'm covered under her insurance. When I turn 24, though, that health insurance goes away (and it goes away before then if I get a full-time job). So, eight years in advance, I am worrying about whether or not I can survive without a full-time job until I'm 24, and if I can find a job that will give me health insurance. I know how you feel.

John,
It's been 10 months since you posted this, and I can't tell you how many times I've played it (along with the neverftba extended version of Pills Pills Pills from Hank) for others to prove the point that just because someone's uninsured doesn't mean s/he is lazy, poor or doesn't want to pay for it. And also to prove the point that what the uninsured are left with, namely emergency rooms and generic drug substitutes, are not good enough!
Thank you to both you and Hank for sharing this!

Bug your government to change now

tvsuicide4 2 years ago
@jukalowe I totally agree with you. I live in Toronto and I've been having this horrible stomach problem lately. I've been to my family doctor three times, had blood and urine tested twice, I got a gastroscopy (When they shove a camera down your throat), and tomorrow I'm getting an upper GI track thingy. The total cost to me (My mom actually, I'm only 16), will be 25 dollars because it's a specialized surgeon who will look at the ultrasound from my test tomorrow.
But your government to change
TehBonar 1 year ago
@jukalowe I would like to point out, good sir, that many times Canadians come down to the United States to pay for medical treatment, because your system simply takes too long to aid medical crises that are not immediately visible. Yes, we would share the cost, but it is proven that any government who does any sort of intervention in any field manages to hemorrhage money horribly. Government health care is inefficient to the highest degree, and the system we have , though imperfect, does work.

Everyone.
Aliciaisgreat 3 years ago
then how is this free health care and what about the people who can't afford to pay their fair share. its just like everything else the. the wealthy would have to pay more and recieve an equal amount of the benefits.
canno73 3 years ago
How terribly frightening that money comes before health.
I don't understand how a country can back up a president who spends billions of tax dollars on a war that kills people, when they could be using those tax dollars here at home on health care.
Aliciaisgreat 3 years ago
without money you can't afford health or food so get over your hippie lets share everything bullshit. liberals like you are the reason hardworking people who are wealthy don't get stimulus checks or tax refunds because they make to much and have to pay more. all wars kill people. a little FYI Obama supports communists guerrila forces in Columbia who kill people read some actuall unbiased news.
canno73 3 years ago
FIRST: you stated that you're wealthy because you're hard-working. Uhh.. the welathy deserve to get back more money because..?
SECOND: Actually, people who make less are taxed more, by percentage
THIRD: It sounds like your priorities are really messed up. We live in a "wealthy" nation but people are dying everyday for one reason. No money. How is that? I would rather live comfortably and pay a little extra taxes for everyone to live, than be rich while others die. Wouldn't you?
Aliciaisgreat 3 years ago
they don't deserve more but they should recieve their fair refund and everyone needs to pay the same percent. I pay more but do i get anymore use of the highway or the park than the store clerk. don't get me wrong alot of people work hard but its bull to say that the wealth just sit back and can afford it. Third we are a wealthy nation but people abuse it through everyday use like illegal aliens using the emergency room and in the government both republicans and democrats abuse our nation.
canno73 3 years ago
So you're saying, that since you pay more money into taxes you should be able to do more things than a person who does not pay as much.
I believe that's called Plutocracy.
"illegal aliens using the emergency room"
Americans do that. They will drive to Canada's busy emergency rooms to get treated because they can't get seen in America without having to put a second mortgage on their house.
I know. I have friends who live on the border and do that.
Aliciaisgreat 3 years ago
Yeah Zeppelin is great but i'm not saying we deserve more i'm just saying we all should pay equal because we recieve equal benefits. sure americans do the same thing but who pays for the fucking mal practice insurance when some dip shit wants to sue because they have some after surgery pain or some bull like that. i donate to but when you support people SOME will abuse it. life is unfair and someone will always be offended.
canno73 3 years ago
the government can't dish out money for people or health care. look at welfare, it has become corrupt because for some its sending them a message of why improve our selves the government will support us.why should anyone pay more for others when its all equal. you can donate you fucking paycheck to charity but i work to hard.
canno73 3 years ago
do you ever go out and help people improve their lives or share your food with them or your money. you can only change the world if you change yourself. anyone can speak of change and not do anything, look at Obama. thanks to human nature there will never be a solution. if you help some the others who can afford it complain. by the way whe the government pays for this stuff it all comes from citizens pockets.
canno73 3 years ago
I know that the money for nationwide health care comes from the citizens pockets.
And I do reach out to other people in need.
What kind of person would I be if I just sat at a computer all day and not go out and physically make a difference?
But, Mr. canno73, it's people like you who make it frustrating for people me to go out and see how things could be better if your generation would allow it.
Although, you do have very good taste in music.
Aliciaisgreat 3 years ago
i have given a bum a twenty for money and he went straight into a licker store so don't blame the rich for the poor's problems. by the way you stupid bitch i'm sixteen and my dad has never held anyone back from helping he and i give turkeys to the poor on the holidays and i do community service, and if your fat ass would read a book. his generation was the 60's peace generation.
canno73 3 years ago
every damn generation is split and if our generation wasn't the entitled give me give me generation people would stop blaming everyone else but themselves. you are blaming old people because of poverty and other things.
canno73 3 years ago
This whole time I thought I was DEBATING with a fifty something year old male.
When this whole time I was arguing with a sixteen year old boy?
But for the record.
I don't blame "old people" for poverty. I blame who they elected. And since this is a democracy those elected reflect those who elected them. At least they should.
