I've got to be close to France. San Sebastian, the crown jewel of Spain, is the quinessential small European city. Barcelona is nice but too hot in the Summer. I feel very Spanish on the Castillian strip of Burgos, Segovia, Avila and El Escorial. Neither are far from Madrid, but the geography leaves much to be desired.
I was going to write a treatise on this but youtube cut me off. Seriously though, Soria has the naturaleza, location (2.5 hours from Madrid), and tradition (los pueblos) in its favor. Plus, it has tons of space. It's the least populated province.
Interesting. I think all spanish regions have their strong and weak points.
For someone used to life in the city Galicia or Asturias shouldnt be an option. We all love nature but those are such isolated regions that no city man could bear for more than a month. For me the best equilibrium between nature contact and cultural offer/social life is the basque coast, but the nationalist atmosphere is annoying...
im from cadiz and im really happy living here but i suposse youre looking for something quite bigger so i recommend you Granada. if you preffer a place nearest madrid, toledo is a great city too. bye and buena suerte
I lived in Madrid for a while and then my family moved to the outskirts, near El Escorial. We're thinking about moving back. It was really nice, but I just love being in the city. Of course, being there as long as you have, maybe I would want a change, too. Good luck with your decision!
puedes responder a esto "commento?"? yo quiero decir "yo hablé con Ben y Marianna de "Notes In Spanish" :P
Gijon, for sure, biggest city in asturias but not enormous, also the quality of life is one of the best in Spain. Also , we´ve got a beautiful beach, warm summers, and not very cold winters
I understand your problem. I have thought about this question a lot. I did my TEFL course after university and moved to Madrid in July 2007. I got a job teaching English and was learning Spainish too. I met una espanola guapa y muy maja tambien. Pero after a year in Madrid I was feeling very stressed! I decided to move to Valencia. It's nice but I miss Madrid and my Madrilena preferida! There's no place like Madrid. But I think Valencia has a lot to offer too y es mas traquilo, llevo 2 semanas.
I lived in the center of Malaga for four years and absolutely loved it. I think it's a fantastic place, and it's set back from all the tourism of the Costa del Sol. But the whole time I lived there I always wanted to move to Barcelona. It's a bigger, more exciting city with loads to do, AND it's got beaches. If you're looking for a change of pace Barcelona definitely wouldn't be it, so I vote for Malaga.

Mallorca es un buen sitio para vivir, buena temperatura, 30 minutos para llegar al otro lado de la isla, todo es playa, etc.
