In order to understand this scene better, Play The Game!!! Just so some facts, the Oathkeeper and Oblivion have different meanings regarding Sora and Roxas. For Sora it represents his friends

Oathkeeper: Kairi. Oblivion: Riku.

For Roxas,

Oathkeeper: the promise he made to Xion to release Kingdom Hearts.

Oblivion: Xion's death.

In my Opinion Roxas could have won, if Xion didn't control him to throw the Oblivion, and if Riku hadn't used the darkness.

Kingdom Hearts got really complicated story if you really want to know the entire truth behind everything what happened and how did it happened you need to play every each part of the game so that's only reason why I want learn Japanese so I could enjoy in final mix's.

Roxas let his gaurd down with riku which is why he gets knocked out. When he woke up he injured riku so badly riku realized the only option left to him was to use the power of darkness to win. Roxas gave riku the keyblade earlier so he could help him fight the NeoShadows.

An Roxas can dual weild the keyblade because he's sora's nobody but he also has Ven's heart. When Xion died he's determinaton to not forget her is what gave him the power to use her keyblade along with his own.
