  • Pure genius!

  • yes - right - its a gift to got idea of that music. My age ppl was grooving with that music. Great times, great music, such fresh, new and great.

  • I would part with one of my bollocks to jump back in a time machine to see this gig!!

  • Recital Of The Script,What a wonderfull spectacle (show)...the best i ever see.

  • Hammersmith Odeon, April 1983, at the end of the UK Script tour. First time I saw them. Forget all the comparisons. They were damn entertaining and we had a great night. I got my moneys worth !

  • Bloody brilliant. These guys were so great.

  • Can't over-state how much I love this band.

  • @DPScott20 I know what you mean! I really do, I have love it in secret and silence for ages!

  • shame he got so pissed he missed half the lyrics

  • @botman9822

You mean the 3 words(second line) he sings a little softer than the rest??

    If that`s pissed, i`m wondering what i`m now then...ow yeah..completely wasted:P:D

  • I fucking love this band.

  • The whole Script for a Jesters Tear album is just pure magic.

    Fish`s voice makes me shake.

  • 7 minutes is not enough .

  • Peter Gabriel was his idol no joke true story ,that's cool tho Peter is a legend.

  • You know, the music isn't half bad but this lead singer and the cheesy, ridiculous makeup is undermining my enjoyment. I hate when Peter Gabriel did it too.

  • @DrummerGrrrl

Well, I personally look past the make up, as it is has to be taken in the context of that era, and hear some great songwriting.

  • @DrummerGrrrl as ridiculous as kiss as alice cooper was....Bad for you.

  • Best band of 80,s better than recent rubbish

  • Excellent performance and recording! My favorite Marillion live video. :)

  • Nudne już jest porównywanie Fisha do Petera Gabriela. Fish śpiewa o wiele lepiej. Jest po prostu sobą !!!!

  • du sous genesis

  • ...listen to the sound of today, and you must say: what a shit...where is the music gone?...

  • geil^^

  • This is obviously a band influenced by early Genesis and sounds quite similar. It was good to have this kind of music instead the Genesis with Collins without Hackett.

  • Gabriel and Genesis split = a better Genesis. Marillion and Derek split = a Marillion w/o Derek. ;) Hogarth and Marillion = a Marillion w/ Hogarth. Enjoy it all for what it is and stop the branding. Those who pick and chose miss out on a lot of good stuff. :)

  • @JRBL1A1 : Gabriel and Genesis split= better Genesis? for disco music yes, not for good progressive rock. If you want to dance then Genesis without Collins is for you, if you really want Progressive then Genesis with Gabriel.

    Don't drink and type...

  • Marillion without Fish is like Starsky without Hutch!

  • Stunning one of my fav Marillion, Fish era tracks

  • shit hot. I was at their last gig. brill!

  • What is this live?

  • Today I have realized that I have some kind of mental disease, my friends and peers are looking ahead for a party on 31st December 2010 and I looking behind for a ONE HELL OF A GARDEN PARTY IN 1987

  • Love it XD

  • @RealityGamersZ or possibly it makes perfect sense to all those able to appreciate it, likely it just went over your head, maybe stick to simpler music

  • focken scotesh,lad

  • Great Song.......!!!!

  • Lake Genesis

  • Marillion <3 The Best (:

  • He is so on...

    just fabulus..

  • marillion are quite fantastically brilliant.love all the old songs. bring back the past!

  • Ich liebe dieses Lied, höre es immer wenn es mir mies geht! Dann muss ich lächeln!

  • Ich liebe diesen Song

  • Fish, the appearance of a yeti, voice of a songbird touched by an angel.. Magic and pure class...

  • Fish is still performing. I saw him last week. he was brilliant.

  • New Marillion is crap

    Fish rules

  • @KathyRockett

tout à fait d'accord avec toi kathyrockett,

je regrette fish et ce son

  • I so agree with what you all have to say regarding how Marillion so represented what Genesis would have been had Gabriel continued. Right down to the theatrics and makeup. What a great band....what a great frontman. Long live Fish!

  • Epic.

  • Damburgery-you have to understand that Fish was continuing the legacy of Genesis throughout the 80's due to Phil taking them down the pop $hitter.

  • Remembering this era is a gift of my generation, The music was made with so much passion and was "so us" . The kids thses days might listen to it but never hear it. those that do hear it are truly gifted..

  • @mirroredmoon I'm with you on that one friend. I'm so grateful to have been young when this all came out. The world was so much more modern 30 years ago, so old fashioned and dreary now. You know what I mean I'm sure.

  • This was the first Marillion song I ever heard. What great memories

  • Marillion pure power. Don't say about "new marillion" marillion.

  • this kind of music will never come again so fuckin sad

  • edit: some Marillion Songs waking up memories and feelings that i can´t explain. it is like: if i hear once a year 3 or 5 Marillion songs that i like and know from the past, i have childhood memories and i feel like i am 10 or eleven years again (only 4 30 mins a year but hey ^^) AND the child that i was while watching and hearing to the VHS-Concert Tapes, UNDERSTOOD NOT A SINGLE WORD ENGLISH, felt like i was a human child on a totally different planet i saw the vid´s, & i watched it by my own

  • i dont know much about Marillion but there are some Songs from Marillion i really like very much.

My Father has everything from Marillion, and as a child i watched some concerts from them on VHS video (can remember it was, or it felt like late dark nights) - it was so different and fascinating what i saw and Heared on this VHS Tapes, but strange sometimes too for me.

  • flash, flash!! Flash!!!

  • fish you are great

comme on in france again please

  • fish accent is so cool great song!!

  • Hello Dad!!!

  • Garden party held today, invites call the guests to play

  • @killzer48 invites all the debs to play :)

  • his voice is very very very different when he's talking!

  • @axzck it is funny that, cos peoples accents hardly show when singing, then when they talk the accent is really strong! like when he says 'gardan-pahrty' lol

  • Aunque Peter Gabriel y Phill Colins son geniales,me gustan más x separado y Marilion me gustaban más que Genesis.Lastima que ya no se pueda escuchar musica buena como esta.

  • This is almost too perfect! Awesome! So fortunate to have seen them with Fish, what a poet and showman!

  • Love this song!! <3 MARILLION!!!! <333

  • This is a bloody great song, best thing they ever did IMO, he has a great voice. They were very brave to do the prog thing in the 80s, when it was so clearly out of fashion.

  • MARILLION MARILLION

  • loving that keyboard hahaha

  • Thank you for posting these great videos........i've got this show but in laser disc.....old, very old..lolo

  • prima da tütt impara a scriv... taròcc... firstable please learn to write... however, to say that marillion (anyway great) are better then genesis and PINK FLOYD... Well, you are not normal... it isn't a gratulation... do you understand it, isn'it? Oh poor thing... Come on tedere, poru fiöö!!!

  • who the hell do you think influenced marillion and bands like spoks beard riverside flower kings GENESIS ELP YES PIONEERS IN PROG ROCK YES OR NO

  • I'm actually hearing this band for the very first time right now....

... and I'm absolutely loving it.

First thing that comes to mind is a Scottish version of 70's Genesis.

Suddenly, I feel less nostalgic about early Genesis.

What they did in the 80's now seems to make sense.

These guys obviously picked up the torch.

  • I absolutely agree, I am young but I must admit that it mustn't be easy to play prog rock like early genesis in the 80's... This band has to be admired. (and he's voice is really similar to gabriel's)

    (sorry for my english)

  • ist der finger oben wird man dich loben

    A VERY GOOD SONG

    i love Marillion

  • come back fish!!!!!!

  • This is what Genesis would have been like in the 80s if Peter Gabriel didnt leave the band

  • so tru - Fish is superb and missed by so many!

  • @dasoxfan88 He is

  • @dasoxfan88 He is Peter Gabriel here :-)

  • @SuperDuus : Exactly

  • @dasoxfan88 oh how i wish he hadnt

  • @dasoxfan88 ...just like Wings becoming the band The Beatles could have been if Lennon hadnt left!

  • @dasoxfan88

unfortunately...turn it on again...and shock the monkey!

    D:

  • @dasoxfan88 I agree with you there.

  • @dasoxfan88 A lot of people say that.

  • Why bother comparing two great bands? if you like them both you get twice the pleasure!

  • ONLY MARILLION ONLY FISH 4ever!!!! genesis are too much worse and that's the truth :-)

  • Um... Not in the 70's they weren't.

  • some people need to really grow up

  • i love Marillion forever

  • cuerpoeperra = fag

  • satanarbeit= KAKORRO......jajaja try to understand it pal.....jajaja.....

  • Beagling on the downs, oh please do come!!

  • Marillion=Harry Potter

    Genesis=Lord of the Rings.

Make your choice. I KNOW WHAT I LIKE....

  • Hahahaha excellent.

  • You are right......but as you know, this world is just confussion, and the people prefer The Beatles over the Britney, The Rolling Stones over The back Street Boys...Ufff pal, what a crap....And the Supper over This Supper`s Copy.....What a crap What a crap......jajajaja saludos.

  • Childish babies doing drive-by thumbs-downing doesn't change the fact I'm right.

  • I detest this discussion! And I guess, that this discussion, that started so early in Marillions carreer, maybe destroyed a more creative music-bizz in the 80th!!! Nobody mourns, if one popstarlett copys the sound of another! But everybody tears out the meat of bands, that play in the similar sound of another creative band new songs, new textes! I d rather hear daily 10 Genesis-Sound-Copys, than those junk, that is played in the radio all day long

  • Comment removed

  • I like the fact that Marillion ripped off Genesis so blatantly. It gives hope to other imitators of prog bands. I can't see anything more grown up about Marillion's music. It is a lot less sophisticated than Genesis' music. It is good though. Good meoldies, good lyrics, even if they are a bit cheesy. But hey, so were Genesis' at times. I think some people who are comparing Genesis to Marillion are listening with their eyes.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • how bad do you look mate. longlive pg return of the giant hog shit

  • How brilliant is this???

  • Marillion has definitly life without being the shadow of Genesis.

  • Love this Song!

    So great, awesome live performance!

  • amazing live performance and amazing song

  • One of the best live performances by anyone ever !! WOW. This song is actually better live.

  • Fish is *such* a sound to sore ears. Today's utter bogus crap like lady gaga or whatever the fuck her face is, makes me so over the top puke sick, it takes me all day to clean up.

    No fear, Marillion is near....

  • So true man

I'm sick of mainstream music, it's seriously retarded that people can actually sit their and listen to most of it.

  • Why not compare two bands/artists that are actually vaguely similar?

Not saying I love Lady Gaga or anything, but apples and oranges etc.

  • Sure. It was just an emotional outburst on my part. I'm just so sick and tired of todays music, and how the industry works.

I also blame the young people for taking whatever is shoved in front of them face value.

When I play Marillion music, I feel so strong about this issue. All these deep poetic feelings of strength, emotion, sensations, thought, depth. I think young people don't get to enjoy that these days, because todays music has absolutely NONE of that. Zilch, nada, nothing.

  • Well, nothing new about most people taking the route of least resistance when it comes to music! There is plenty of music around today with those sensations you mentioned, just most people don't get to it because they don't get past what's on FM radio or they don't want to be challenged or have to think.

Anyway, good old Fish - he's always done it the way he wanted and Marillion deserved much more success than they've had - I've never understood why they weren't huge in the US.

  • Jeje my uncle says the same of the eighties youngers who listened this band...........He says that Genesis where the real music...and this was Light prog rock...jajajaja it is very funny...........

  • Personally, I think Fish+Marillion is better than Genesis in every way.

Listen to all the variety of Misplaced Childhood.

Then compare Grendel that that Supper thing that Genesis did. I really don't understand why anyone put Genesis above Fish/Marillion.

  • Well, i think that is because the ten years or more of difference.....behind the Supper`s was the Beatles and all the rockandroll thing......but behind Marillion was Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, etc etc

  • Any way is just a point of view and all the respect to you and Marillion`s fans!!!! sorry for my english pal, i am from the South! :)

  • ........It`s just a point of view.....And in the musical stetic, Marillion could be better about the variety....but the variety it`s not a point that make a band better or whorst than other...Genesis was most darker, most "agressive" at his era, just look Gabriel escene (singing the Supper`s with the wolf mask and the woman dress and you will know what i mean about his darker power and light prog eighties band)..

  • I think Grendel is darker, deeper, more powerful. He also used a mask. Imitation perhaps, but he's better. Deeper non-trivial poetry, more sophisticated lyrics. Compare: watch?v=qvf-I_Kzru4 which morphs into the second part watch?v=XWs2aQIiCKg Check out 4:00 onwards... It's like an adventure... And all the while with Mark Kelly's uniquely branded Marillion keyboard sounds. And then Genesis' Supper's Ready: watch?v=mTQBr9bIzJU is more like a children's show... Phil Colins confined to drums.
  • In that sense, it's like Marillion is like Genesis for grown ups.

  • But the facts are the oposite.... The eigthies teens heard Marillion, not Geneis.....Like today`s teens hear Green Day and not the Death Kennedys.....It`s a cultural rule...jajajaja...With the time, our culture begin to lose his freshness and creativity.....First was Genesis...Ten years after Merillion...and now Dream teather......Can you see???? The thing goes down jejeje :)

  • The cinema show lyric is based on a poem of Mr T.S. Eliot "The Waste Land"....(The fire SErmon)...Read it...it`s not a trivial.. and it is so beautiful........jejejejeje but it is a litle intense for the eighties teens...jejeje..saludos!

  • All I can say is check out the end of Grendel when Marillion tries sadly to mimic Apocalypse in 9/8 from Supper's ready. The rhythmic accents, the chords underneath, the mask, are all a thinly veiled copy.

  • oops pal,,,,Are you right......i check it and it was awesome......I am hearing Marillion for the first time, and it`s ok to me...but when i hear this kind of things...it dissapointed me.....I love a lot Genesis music... and god....Grendel thing it`s a terrible copy....saludos!

  • I like Marillion and their song Grendel, but I just think that there are obvious similarities, That's no reason to dislike Marillion though. Both bands got inspiration from other bands. Both are great.

  • I've compared them: the closing section of grendel is exactly the same as apocolypse in 9/8 but without the awsome organ solo. I like both but prefer Genesis. this song kicks ass though

  • Reminds me of a young Peter Gabriel.

  • Yes I always thought they picked up where Genesis left off (or abandoned)

  • im rocking im fucking so welcome awesome band died when fish left

  • Its I'm Rucking, not rocking.

And no, the band definitely did not die when FISH left, and to this day, create brilliant music, albeit a little less proggy.

Maybe Hogarth's Marillion is a little too poppy for prog purists and a little too proggy for pop lovers, but its brilliant none the less.

Go and listen to "Season's End" and tell me the band "died when FISH left".

Thanks for the post, 5/5 and favourited.

  • THE BEST THANKS FISH!!!!!!!

  • origial ricky nelson

  • had such a couple of nice heavy seshiz recently whereupon a mate started chucking the good man fish at me following loads of great genesis, nice

  • love whole "Script for a Jester's tear"

  • "Thank you Marillion, Oh what a band!"Anybody recommend something from the Steve Hogarth era band!Want to give them a chance but dont want to be put off by trying an iffy track! If ye know what i mean...?Peace Ye`all!!

  • "Between You and Me" from Anoraknophobia

  • Easter/Fantastic Place/Estonia

Don't be put off- they are a totally different band with Hogarth, but still brilliant. Lyrically rather less cutting and a bit trippy rather than rocking.

  • Probably the best ever made!!

  • fish makes the band!

  • Fish was the band

  • Fish was great - no doubt. But don't scorn the other guys! Marillion was a BAND. Fish 'a capella' would have been less than half as nice ...

  • Only Fish could completely mystify his audience with such finger gestures but still entertain them.

  • Marillion always had a great bass in all songs. This is yet another proof. What a performance!!

  • Peter's bass lines are some of the most melodic aside from some of McCartney's.

Pure spunk, never over the top. I love the way he pulls opens up a chord to make it interesting.

  • "Garden Party" live is even better.

Marillion is one of the best Rock bands ever, the other one is SAGA...

  • Incredible....

  • quel performance, quelle joie, le plaisir est comme d'habitude communicatif, merci, merci marillion pour tout.

  • marillion went shit after fish left he was marillion

  • I agree totally!

  • i Agree Agelessguy!! Fishh Is The Orignal And Marillion Neva Will B The Same x

  • Look agelessguy,

Sure Fish was the biz, but it`s not Hogarth`s fault that Fish didn`t carry on with Marillion. Shut the hell up

  • it's all a dream

  • Thats an unreal performance buy Fish a real Genius great voice and underated 5***********

  • Nothing comes close to the genius that is Fish. And Marillion will never be the same without him-never.Screw Hogarth!!
