Mr. Kotke has been a favorite musician of mine since my teens. Guitar Hero just seems a bit narrow for a man of his artistic caliber. He doesn't shred. He doesn't go for blinding speed. He composes. What what a voice. He never cared for it, but he phrase a touching lyric.
I haven't heard this peice before, very nice. I got the Armadillo album around 1973 and listened to it a lot I wanted a real stero so I could hear it better. Not long after I saw him in a concert, in Providence RI, with three acts. Leo Kotke, Frank Zappa, and Mahavishnu Orchestra. I think Leo Kotke's playing will be a bench mark for a long time to come.
This is by far one of his most mesmerising pieces.
I saw him a couple years ago in Olympia WA, at the ripe young age of 38yo. I was probably the youngest one in the crowd. I enjoy tinkering on my guitar for fun, but have no ambition to try and match his level of mastery. I would probably end up divorced, in an insane asylum, or brain dead from neural overload.
Either way, I hope he keeps playing as long as he can. Perhaps he may even come out with some new stuff one of these days.
@PatriotCondor a precision tuned georgia mad man. i remember him as a young pup. somewhere around the time you were getting that first spank i'd guess. time flys dude, pic that guitar up and play it with all the gusto you can muster.
Anyone see him at Long Beach college in very early 70's like I did? Saw Leo at the Coach House a few years ago and wow like hearing a CD so precise and pefect and played it all.
One of the things that I love most about music is that element of surprise! Around 1970 or so, my dear friend Christie introduced me to the music of Leo Kottke. All I can say to her is thank you from the bottom of my music loving heart!
@1953jazzman I went to a concert he gave about 1970 having no idea who I was going to see. It was a wonderful surprise. I love the way he is able to take advantage of these weird tunings which are so great for resonance and all but normally sound very somber and yet he often has a very melodic and bright sound using them.
One of my favorites, too. Kottke I'm sure did not choose the title to this song recklessly. Owls have been cast as a symbol of both divination and ill omen throughout the centuries, which indicates just how uncertain we are as to how to feel when we encounter them in the silence of a dark, wooded forest, let's say. The sheer beauty of this melody reflects one man's interpretation of their being.
